RME Fireface UFX III -> Neve 1073 DPA -> ADI-2 Pro (1st gen)

Hi everyone, I am writing for help in configuring my mastering and monitoring chain using a Fireface UFX III, a 1st gen. ADI-2 Pro and a Neve 1073 DPA.

My current hardware wiring is as follows:

Clock: UFX III Master (Internal), ADI-2 Pro is slave (via AES)
Digital Connection: UFX III and ADI-2 Pro are linked bi-directionally via AES/EBU (In/Out)
Outboard Loop:UFX III Analog Out 3-4 -> Neve 1073 Line Input
Neve 1073 Line Output -> ADI-2 Pro Analog In (XLR combo).

I want to use the ADI-2 Pro high-end AD converters for the Neve return, send that digital signal back to the UFX III via AES, and monitor the chain using the headphones output on the ADI-2 Pro. Is this possible cause I'm literally going crazy and can't find a solution... whatever option I try I end up hearing back only the DAW output but not the Neve return? This unless I connect the headphones to the UFX which kinda better but still giving me headaches to configure the routing.

I would highly appreciate your help regarding three specific questions:

ADI-2 Pro Device Mode: Which mode should I set on the first-generation ADI-2 Pro for this specific setup? Should I use AD/DA, DAC, or Preamp mode to properly route the Analog In to AES Out while keeping the headphone outputs active?

Logic Pro I/O Plugin: Is it recommended to use Logic's native I/O Plugin on the Master Bus to send the signal to the Neve and print it back, or is it better to avoid it and handle the routing differently (e.g., separating the Stereo Out from the recording track)?

Logic Pro Outputs: How should I set the output routing in Logic? Should the main output go to Analog 1/2 (and then routed via TotalMix FX) or should it be assigned directly to the AES output (Channels 13/14 on the UFX III)?

Any help would be much appreciated!
Antzuo

Greetings,

i would like to test an external AD/DA that i want to connect to my ADI-2 PRO via ADAT optical.
The converter does not have any volume control, so i am not sure if this can work, i'm pretty new in this field...

Is it possible to control the volume of the ADAT outputs of the ADI-2 Pro?

I think i have read somewhere that the ADAT outs can be assigned to the main
volume and that these can be controlloed in parallel, so that the ADAT output volume
follows the analog output settings on the ADI. Can this be done?

cheers
FIXXXER

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to set up a mastering workflow on the ADI-2/4 Pro SE and would appreciate some guidance on whether this is possible (and the best way to approach it).

Constant routing (must stay always active)
USB Playback 3/4 → Rear TRS Outputs 3/4
This feeds my analogue chain and returns into Analog Inputs 1/2

This part works fine and should remain unchanged in all cases.

What I’m trying to achieve

I need 3 monitoring “states”:

State 1 – Main monitors (ADAT)

ADAT Out active
XLR 1/2 muted
Phones muted
TRS 3/4 stays active (insert return)

State 2 – Second monitors (XLR)

XLR 1/2 active
Phones muted
ADAT ideally muted BUT still clocking (my Trinnov Nova loses lock if ADAT is fully disabled)

State 3 – Headphones

Phones active (front TRS 1/2)
XLR muted
ADAT muted

Main issues / questions
Is there a way to store and quickly recall such output configurations?

Can ADAT be “silent” but still maintain clock (so connected monitors don’t drop)?

What’s the recommended way to handle multi-monitor switching on this unit?

Am I approaching this wrong—should this be done differently within the ADI-2/4 architecture?

The routing itself isn’t the problem—it’s the switching between these states that’s slowing me down.

Any advice or workflow suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

When I first boot into Windows, I can listen to music fine but something comes up, I stop the music, turn off the DAC and come back later. Then, sometimes, foobar refuses to play. There’s a chirp and blip on the spectrum analyzer which seems to sustain. No sound otherwise until I reboot. DAC works through Optical still. I have been down the AI troubleshooting rabbit hole and nothing worked. I should note that nothing WDM shows up in the RME driver and WASAPI exclusive mode never worked in Foobar. So here I am.

My setup:

Windows 11 // DAC is plugged directly into front USB slot on Beelink EQ12 using RME cable
Foobar: v2.25.8 64bit; foo_out_asio 2.2.4 // Enable MMCSS is ON
RME: ADI-2 DAC fs; Hardware Rev 81; Madiface driver 1.015 // Enable MMCSS is ON

Any ideas?

How is the repair process for ADI 2 series from the USA for products out of warranty? I have an ADI 2/4 and was wondering how much a new board would cost, as an example. I appreciate the after-warranty repair, as other audio companies usually don't offer it. But I'm curious about costs for future reference

Simple question: Does the ADI-2 FS DAC use Native DSD? Or only DoP?

I am using USBAudioPlayerPRO_7107_tv.apk (the software) to play streaming audio and sound files (.flac, .wav, .mp3, etc), including DSD files (.dsf) on an Nvidia Shield Pro Android TV device (the hardware).

My DAC (the other hardware) is the RME ADI-2 FS. This DAC, as explained in its manual, accommodates DSD playback at DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256 levels.

When I switch, in UAPP's Settings -> USB audio -> DSD mode, from "DoP (DSD over PCM)" to "Native DSD", UAPP instantly throws up 2 warning messages:

"Failed to find interface for native DSD playback!" and

"Error: USB setup failed!"

and my .dsf files will not play. My question is: Why is this?

In the ADI-2's manual, its section on DSD contains this slightly cryptic line:

"To transfer DSD data over SPDIF, AES or even USB, DSD over PCM (DoP) is the de-facto standard."

(Slightly cryptic because it makes that statement and leaves it at that, with no further context or explanation as to why.)

But is this really true for USB DSD in all or most situations?

Can the ADI-2 FS DAC play DSD files via "Native DSD"? Or only via DoP?

If so, how do I set it up?
If not, why not?

Thanks for your consideration.

I hope someone can help me find a decent remote control for this dac. The remote control is so so bad and I am fed up with it. Is there an alternative for the one rme sells? And one that works. The original sometimes works if you press hard on the underside or if you bend the pins on the inside which makes contact with the battery.
I hope someone knows a simple method or remote to control the dac.
Thanks

I have a brand new ADI-2 FS that upon powering up after having been off for a few days will make a repeated clicking sound with flashing leds. When I unplug it from the conditioner/outlet, then plug it back in, it will then function without issues. Afterwards if I turn it off and then come back later the same day it will power up with no issue.

The issue occurs plugged into power conditioners or outlets located elsewhere in the apartment. None of the other audio gear going into the same conditioner is having issues.

I have gone through customer support and also an RME rep. I initially was sent another power supply from RME and that is the one that I'm currently using. YES the power supply is secured in the RME unit.

Posting to see if anyone has had any similar issues that can provide any suggestions. Debating on using it as is or returning it.

hi there,

i am thinking about how to get the acoustic quality and options of the adi 2/4 for my setup which is currently a 2.1 setup where i delay the subwoofer by about 6ms.

so since this is apparently not possible natively using the adi software (no delay function implemented), the only option i see here is to pass the digital signal via adat and spdif AT THE SAME TIME @192khz to the adi.

i am not sure if that is possible; i know those channels can do 192khz at stereo only, so no way to send lets say 2x2 via adat only.

the question is: is that a feasible approach? making ucx ii master clock should at most give some static very subtle 'offset' between adat (one stereo pair for monitors) and spdif (one stereo pair for the subwoofer).

is that possible? did anyone do this yet? thanks ..

USB Isolator Synapse/HS02

Hello, just wanted to share my experience with these devices. These devices "Break" ground loops between PC and down stream gear, like Powered Studio Monitors, to eliminate "Hum" and other strange noises coming from high noise GPU/PC environment.

JDS Synapse Product Link : https://jdslabs.com/product/synapse/
Topping HS02 Product Link: https://www.toppingaudio.com/product-item/hs02

I use MSI x870 on AM5, with RME-ADI-2 DAC FS.

I tried Synapse first, it worked great to break ground loop on powered monitors, but did not work so well with the combination of AM5/X870/ADI-2. Lots of handshake problems, not connecting after resume, random drop outs, etc. I tried many troubleshooting things, bios adjustments, windows power management etc. Never could get Synapse stable for daily trouble-free use.

HS02 has been extremely stable, but I have only had it a few days. The device works great to break ground noise loop. Despite it's 1NF coupling capacity it works quite well for this application. And appears to be "More compatible" for troublesome systems then other, cheaper options. Think partly because it has it's own PSU option, so can ignore weird USB power saving, or slow startup etc. Having it's own psu bypass motherboard "weirdness". Wish the coupling capacity was a bit lower, but Hifime and DSD tech lack the PSU, not sure they are as stable. I hear some complain of heat on HS02 but mine runs quite cold, barely warm. Probably because ADI-2 does not pull much.

Performance and cost of these products vary a bit, despite the use of same chip. Some are more compatible then others. buyer beware.

I use XLR(starquad, pro cable) to my Kali-in5 and when ADI-2 is "powered on" there is no odd noise, but when ADI-2 is "off" the noise (gpu hash/chirp) comes though to monitors, so this isolator gets rid of that. I don't hear any difference in sound, other then missing noise. System is gaming PC, with RTX 4080 so, noisy environment. Of course i have Furman pST8D, shielded power cables, and good usb cable (belkin gold) but the noise can still persist. You can do "Everything right" and still have this problem, though one could argue if it needs fixing since it's only audible when adi-2 off. Will try Meanwell GSM25B12 (50ua leakage)for adi-2 soon, only cost 12$, my adi-2 is 7 years old so smps could use replacement anyways.

Would have rather used Synapse, im a fan of JDS, but just did not work with my combination.

-Regards
Mike
