The problem is solved now. The cause was low voltage of the power adaper first tried namely 9v 0.7a. Replaced today by luckily found 12v 1.2a it started to sync and work perfectly again. Shows now -90db noise which is close to what it was. I was already going to sell it for parts but it's alive again saved at the last moment with me going to give up. So, the main message here is the correct voltage.

Ground loop and/or leakage current. Or sample rate is higher than 48 kHz.

After starting using external power adapter meters have started to show -75db noise level for non-connected inputs, is it normal? Connected to preamp inputs show -50db with pream off. Before it had been -99db with power from firewire. Second audiocard showed -72db which is now replaced back by hdsp. Either inputs have become noisier or the previous metering was incorrect or actual metering has become incorrect.

It works now with external power adapter. Why repair? Sending for repair abroad would be costlier than buying another used one locally.

It worked but due to the following cunning method: 1 booted xp with power adapter (i use available 9v 0.7a positive center wire) disconnected 2 if sync fails i replug the firewire cable (only original cable works, cable from phaseone digital back does not work) 3 red diod starts flashing 4 now i insert power adapter into receptacle and voila: flashing stops and meters work. So previously external power was not required. I suspect that some radioparts in pci card no longer supply required power due to age - that's why this method helps.

AC adapters are almost vanished from the market.
DC is used by default.

I would take the RME power supply it has enough power (24Watt) and is made for RME devices.

Also, the RME shop has listed the Multiface for this power supply :

From manual: current of more than 2.5 A during initialisation. Current at 12 Volt operating voltage: unloaded 500 mA (6 Watts), loaded 760 mA (9 Watts). Supply voltage range DC 8 V – 28 V, AC 8 V – 20 V.6 Don't understand if it needs ac or dc? Or both? I want to find smth compatible as routers have similar jack.

Is it not printed on the box next to the power socket ?

This is from the Multiface ll wich I guess is the same as the Nuendo-Link box

I have already put it out of the chassis. The settings were the same as they had been before when it stopped working. Such no metering had happened sometimes before but usually was solved by unplugging and plugging back firewire cord. I don't have external power supply, it's not needed for connection to pci card.
I have also tried switching between all 8 built in presets to no result.
