Topic: DUREC not recognizing a FAT32 USB drive---

I am a UFX newbie and was puzzled that a newly-formatted (in FAT32) USB drive (250GB) was not being recognized when plugged into the front panel. Jeff Peterson with RME US immediately recognized the problem as the drive lacking a Master Boot Record.

A quick re-partition (in which the MBR option was chosen) and the UFX recognized the drive which was quickly initialized and properly displayed in the Totalmix recording window.

Hi,

Sounds like you had the own solution already, but what kind of software did you use for FAT32 formatting?

FAT32 certainly has the maximum size (32GB?) for removable drives, but was your particion with MBR bigger than 32GB?

By the way, I use a free software called FAT32format to format my 160GB drive for DUREC, but curious to see if I can partition this to 80GB NTFS and 80GB FAT32.

Thank you!

I used Disk Utility on a Mac. Single partition,  but now with an MBR. As to dual formatting-- what is the purpose?

Re: DUREC not recognizing a FAT32 USB drive---

Thank you for the info. Mac has a better utility to format the disk for Windows OS, then.

Regarding the dual formatting, it's just to use the entire hard drive more efficiently, since I probably won't fill the external drive with DUREC files. Read/Write FAT32 drive is a little slow on Win OS side, and also not secure. But never mind, I was just curious, since you seemed successful partitioning the drive with two types of formats. I'll just dedicate the entire drive for FAT32.

Then there is a mis-understanding-- the entire drive was FAT32-- I only added a MBR. As for speed-- the read/write speed of the drive (and its cache) is the "limiting" factor, and after the fact you are stuck with USB2.0. Hasn't anything to do with the drive format AFAIK.

Thanks. Well, then enjoy the power of DUREC, which is in my opinion the best feature of UFX.

The thing is, the utility to breakdown the DUREC file (multichannel WAV file processor) is still kind of primitive (not bad, though). So let's provide more user feedbacks to RME, and then we all have the best of the best!

If you make sure the FAT32 one is the first partition then you can have another one with NTFS. DURec will always and only use the first one.

Not trying to be argumentative, but why would I want an NTFS partition on the DUREC drive?

Why not...? HeadScratch
Because that partition won't be limited to 4GB files and can be used for other purposes. In any case, it's an option and a possibility, not a necessity.
