Topic: my adi 2 pro fs has crackling & noisy sound issue.

I've already sent email about this issue over a year ago.
but I didn't get any direction of help. so I write this here again.

over a year ago,
weird sound issue start from my adi 2 pro fs.
on windows 10 pro,
usb connection,
normal usage with 24bit, 192khz, usb mode(auto) or dac mode.

sometime, randomly sounds being crackling, noisy and teared on just playback.
there is only way being correct is off&on again adi 2 pro fs or dis/re-connect usb cable.

I've try some ways to fix this,

1. add fan for cooling -> still same.
2. adding usb repeater with dc power -> still same.
- not using anymore after change to shorter usb cable.
3. change to shorter usb cable (maybe 1.2 or 1.5m from 1.8m or 2m) -> still same.
- I cannot use any shorter cable by limitation of my hardwares position.
4. add heatsink inside(chipsets on pcb) and outside of adi 2 pro fs -> still same.
- I know, this meant to be breaking warranty, but I had to do anything for fixing...

after all of these history of trying, sound issue still happen, but lesser maybe.
the time when it really being crazy, issue was happen 2~4 times in a day.
but now, 2~3 times in a week..

now only few methods are remain that I could try
- add aluminium emi shield tapes on usb cable surface
- add usb filter/isolator from Intona?

or is there any solution to fix this?
I'm being heavily tired about this now...

unfortunately, I don't have any different sources to test.
may spdif, adat or aes input would be different, but I need adi 2 pro fs as main dac for my PC.

Your description points 100% to the computer being the culprit. Typical USB performance problems. Lots of threads, partly with help and solutions, in this forum.

after some search,  from forum threads, I just found x99 chipset board had usb issue.

but I've already disable Xhci hand off for stability long time ago,
so for testing, disable ehci hand off, too.

it may need more enough time but in 2~3days, issue wasn't happen yet.
I will reply when it be fixed or not.

nah... unfortunately, noise was happen again yesterday.

is there any more solutions I would try?
some threads were mentioned about nvidia graphics card but I don't use any nvidia cards on current system.

If it is 'nearly' stable now - what about trying other buffer sizes in the ADI's Settings dialog?

I changed buffer from 4096 to 8192 at 192khz sample rate.
it was ok until end of 2020.
but recently, crackling happens again.

which option do I have to do next?

1. lower buffer to 2048 or less.
2. fully cover with metalic EMI shield tape on usb cable.
3. usb isolater/filter from Itonia

are these all capable to fix issue?

Try this. Worked for me.
I have x99 mb.
This mother board comes with usb 3.1 pci addon.
Attach that.
Isolates crappy usb 2 on x99 .
Works 100%

Probably no, waste of money.

Have you tried 44.1 kHz instead of 192 ?

I bought pcie usb 3.1 add-on cards yesterday but still in shipping.

usb filter or shield tapes will be last method when all those are failed.

I will write further progress.

only changing sample rates to 96 or 48khz didnt solve issue. but might be lesser if I remember corretly.

after pcie usb 3.1 add-on card was installed & using for adi 2 pro fs usb connect,
crackling was gone but other new issue coming up.

now with usb add-on card, adi 2 pro fs shortly disconnect & re-connect in random.
so sound just muted shortly while dis/re-connect term.
and when this happen lightly, not a re-connect, just shortly muted.

sample rates didnt solve this either, so random.
sometime 192khz fine, but 48khz 96khz have issue. but other try, 192khz issue and 48khz and 96khz being less.

so, what next I have to do? any idea?

Back up your data.
Reformat your c drive reinstall windows.

You either have corrupt system or viruses.
Check your video card drivers,  they sometimes screw things up.

I used mine on fresh windows on my main comp.
I can even use the adi on a crappy 14 yr old 2 gb ram laptop  without breakups ect.

Reformat reinstall. Keep it basic then try again using usb3.1 card.

There’s definitely something amiss  that usb 3.1 card should work independently.

Oh and use a different usb cable and try foobar or jriver.  USE ASIO.

thank you for advice.

anyway, now I try last method
wrapped usb cable with aluminium foil for additional emi shielding and it already done.

I will do test random playing through tonight to tomorrow with that modded cable.
after this testing, if nothing fixed, I would rebuild my system or upgrade whole hardware parts later.

General advice:

IF it should be virus, special care is needed:
- immediate action in terms of isolation of the system
- and then to check on this isolated system, whether a virus is present
GOAL: Isolation, not to infect other devices or data on any storage (local or via network)

Before new installation make sure, that you do not install from a maybe infected installation source / media.

There is definitely something going on there.

You can sometimes get web browser loading up in the background due to infected browser cookies.
That use system resources, do as Ramses said isolate . If you do format and fresh install. Keep it basic.

If it fixes the problem, install what you need   bit at a time , that way you know what’s happening.
And keep system resources monitor open  check cpu usage .

now, with modded shielding usb cable, on original mono usb port, just over about 2 hours test.
(because spare modified usb cable just short a bit it cannot reach to pcie addon card by 5 inches)

at least, no more crackling happen, but really short muted still happen.
fortunately that was not caused by short dis/reconnect. just only short mute under 0.1~0.3 second.
it is shorter than before which test on pcie addon cards with normal usb cable.

it seems my system in hazardous EMI noisy environment.

whatever happen now, I will try isolated virus scan by follow your advices. thank you.

Keep checking resource monitor  watch for anything that gives bursts of high cpu usage.

Hello,
I'm using as a source an Auralic music streamer and the RME ADI 2 DAC. Yesterday was for the first time that the DAC made first a Pink noise, seconded by a cracking noise, and after that muted.
My first reaction was, what is happening? After that, I tried to understand the issue, but as I see above, is o long-time issue with this product.
Did you find a solution in the end? Is the manufacturer offering support to solve this issue? I have the product for less than 2 months, Is it a warranty issue?
Any suggestion is very welcomed. If I don't find a solution, I will look for another DAC.

My first reaction would be to switch to the Status Overview screen and check what is going on. Also it would be nice to know what you played - PCM, DSD, sample rate? USB or something different via SPDIF?

The Auralic streamer works good with the ADI-2 DAC unless you have a defective USB cable, an outdated ADI firmware (very old, so unlikely) or use 768 kHz constantly (which stresses many hosts and lets them fail sooner or later).
