Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Edit: I try to explain my thoughts about your "error on installation", hope it helps to understand:

magnumpraw wrote:

I am getting the following error on installation.

https://i.ibb.co/ymL1qJnF/kmutil.png

This "error" is no error at all. Seems, you mix kext- and systemextension- commands together and/or misinterpret them?

"kmutil rebuild" is kext-related. This informs macos about kext collection changes - not necessary here because your pic shows: The installer has deleted the kext and via "systemextensionsctl list | grep rme" you just have the acknowledgment that the system extension (= rme dk driver) is installed, loaded (and running).

Note: kernel extension != system extension (while driverkit drivers belong to system extensions)

Edit: end

magnumpraw wrote:

the driver seems to function ok till somewhere between 30 mins to an hour when the computer will completely freeze up requiring a force shutdown and reboot.

I do not think that the freeze is caused by the rme dk driver, as you do not provide any indicators for this.
A freeze could be caused by a "faulty" installed kext driver, etc, etc....
But not by DK drivers, as they are running in user space (thats the reason why Apple advices to move to DK instead of kexts).

Anyhow, if you want a fresh install:

https://i.ibb.co/yFdczk04/dext-settings.png

1) from your image above, click the little circle with 3 dots -> Delete Extension

2) In /Applications delete the "Fireface USB Settings" App (if it still exists) and Totalmix App

3) disconnect your unit

4) Make a real shutdown (not "just" a reboot)

5) Start your mac

6) Only, if your SIP has been disabled before (for whatever reason), reenable SIP (by booting into recovery mode via "csrutil enable" in terminal), reboot. (If you need SIP disabled, you can disable SIP again after step 10)).

7) Before going to step 8) Verify that there is no dk driver anymore in /Library/SystemExtensions
(not like before):https://i.ibb.co/7xTcSLQn/sysext-folder.png

8) Do a "fresh" install of the (current v4.21) dk driver - Before clicking "reboot" indicated by installer, of course, check the permission for the login items given has to be allowed. Check it before.

9) Reboot

10) connect your unit

ok, thanks.

Have followed your steps and will report back if there are any more issues. Thanks!

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

can anyone provide a download link for driver kit driver v. 3. 18? unable to find it in the archive.
updated to v. 4.21 yesterday and for the first time experienced dropouts while updating some software via the App Store.
was just listening to music with Apple Music...  USB data issues / audio restarts caused by USB transfers.

with v. 3.18 no problems whatsoever!

https://archiv.rme-audio.de/download/dr … ac_318.zip

Released 13.09.2019 for Mac Intel, if this driver will run properly on a M4 Mac...?
Up to you trying the installer, I doubt the installer will work. You may disable SIP for the installation or lower the security level.
Read the readme of a newer KEXT driver, 3.33

that was a misunderstanding! sorry
Driverkit v.3.18 was the Driver previous to DK 4.20/ 4.21. don't know about the release date but it was sometime around mid/end 2024...

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

The link above is the only 3.18 driver.
There is no other type of driver with the same number.
KEXT drivers are number 3 and from number 4 onwards it is DK drivers afaik.

You may try the 3.33 driver

"se penny has fallen" wink
sorry for confusing the numbers.... you are right!
so the DK Driver officially released prior to driver_usbdk_mac_421 must have been driver_usbdk_mac_418?
that is the one I´m looking for!

you can take the link from the 421 driver and just replace the numbers (of an existing one)

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Thank You Waedi!

unfortunately just to confirm my previous suspicion: experienced Audio Dropouts with Driverkit v.4.21 while e.g. updating apps through Appstore and/or closing Tabs in Safari under MacOS 15.3 and 15.4. Driver reported Transfer Errors and Audio Restarts.
with cpu and memory idling in the activity monitor.
reverted back to Driverkit v.4.18 all is good again under MacOS 15.4

I´m having trust issues right now....

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

nice to find this! had a lot of issues with latest drivers, now with 4.18 it's less smile Spotify plays good and Ableton also , I am on a MacBook Pro M1 Pro ventura 13.7.4. since 4.21 lots of glitches, with 4.18 less but still "too much".

found the 331 here, https://rme-audio.de/downloads/driver_usb_mac_331.zip now it's better

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

I’m in the process of migrating from my very old Mac Mini to a current Mac Studio M4. Given that I was stuck with MacOS 10.xx and will now be on the most recent version, I expect that I will have to update drivers and Total Mix. Will I have to completely reinstall all this? And will I lose my current settings in TotalMix that I was finally and painfully able to piece together on a way that works for me? Can I back up all settings on the old machine and bring them over the to the new? Or will this happen automatically with the migration currently running?

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Simply double-click the new driver installer, this will replace the old Totalmix with the latest one, alle settings will remain.

Unfortunately no. The device doesn’t show up at all. I can install the new drivers successfully. There is no option to allow applications to do something under Privacy and Security.
This is on a brand new Mac Studio M4 with Sequoia 15.4.1 and a UCX2

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Then also check :
MacOS system preferences / general / startup items and extensions
scroll down to driver extensions
click the little i-icon right side
it may reveal an ON / OFF switch for the driver (make ON)

Phew. Thanks a lot. That did the trick. Looks like Apple really changed a lot from the older menu settings and naming conventions. Can’t say I like that. I would’ve never found this without your help.

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

You are right, Apple did some changes.
Many times when users write " brand new M-Mac" this is the reason for the issue, the hidden .driver extension switch.
Glad you can work, happy recordings.

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

For those who are afraid 15.4.1

MBook M3 Max, OS 15.4.1, UFX III, 3.33 ke, FW24, USB3, - everything works.
DC.NG 0.93 b2 - also works.

Used  for FX FOH Live, MADI 56/28ch 96Kz, console Digico SD. All plugins for MADI work through LiveProfessor.

Update FW23 to FW24 did through Windows 10, then installed ke 3.33 on the Mac

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Count me in with the 'glitches' using DriverKit 4.21..
Mac mini M2 Pro, updated to MacOS 15.4.1 (happened on release of the driver however)
Digiface USB.

The system works but there's some weird issues here and there. First thing I noticed was playing a file in Audio Finders little preview window would cause it to 'skip' at the end and repeat the last bits of the file, almost like my sampler was looping real quick. Doesn't happen under 4.18.

When using stuff like Apple Music, or even Quicktime, when I stop a track I get this little static noise afterwards, almost like it's choking when trying to stop the stream. I can listen to Apple Music all day long and let it play from track to track just fine, you only get this glitchy 'pop' when you stop it, or close the app. Same with Quicktime, if the song plays to the end, it's all great. If I hit stop or when I close the app, there it is. Its not loud or speaker blowing mind you, but its still there. I have NOT noticed this in either Cubase Pro 14 or Wavelab 12 though.

FWIW - my Digiface USB also started intermittently not showing up when I turn it on now. Powers up fine, I see it sync to my two Pulses, lights are green, but the Mac doesn't see it. Doesn't happen every time, and I'm still not sure it's the connection/hub/etc itself yet.

Just got the Digiface to replace my MOTU last November, 4.18 was pretty rock solid and flawless (and still seems to be). I had the same issues under 4.2 and went back to 4.18, decided to give 4.21 a try but its still there.
