Didn't realize that was the way to nab older ones.

It appears to be behaving a bit better now after another restart, so will keep an eye on it and see.

Driver for UFX II under macOS 15.5

I installed the latest v427 driverkit for UFX  II on my M1 running 15.5.  I can see dk in Extensions and it is enabled, but USB settings does not launch.

I downloaded both FUT, fut_usb_mac and fut_madiface_mac, but neither will launch.

This UFXII was working with an earlier kext driver, but my company now does not allow kext only dk

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Hello there!
I'm kinda new here, with kinda the big problem. Basically, I've tried everything that was said here (even installing an older version of the driver, every commands...) but there was always something missing as I'm concerned: every files appart the app.

I never had any "RMEFirefaceUSB.kext" in /Library/Extensions.
Nor I have the other files (like the "de.rme-audio.TotalmixFX.plist"): literally, appart from the files in applications... I truly have nothing else.
At this rate, I'm wondering if I should erase everything on my computer and start everything on a new base ha ha

For information, I'm working with a MacBook M1.
I've returned the the latest driver for the last installation.

I've installed and uninstalled dozen times this driver, and seriously, I'm slightly going mad with that

This Fireface UFX III has arrived, and since then, it's been working fine on this iMac 24 M4 running under Sequoia (15.3.1) _
I was wondering because I replaced a Fireface 800 that still had the Firewire connection.

Now, plugged into one of the iMac M4's Thunderbolt 4 ports and after installing the drivers (DriverKit Driver) and then updating the firmware, it's a breeze.

Hello there!
Back to the stuff for some hours, so, small update before replying: I've finished the reset of my MacBook, everything is clean... so, I've tried again! ... and it's quite better, but still doesn't work, but at least I have almost every files (still need to re-check this).

RME Support wrote:

I've installed the DriverKit v.427, and the Kernel extension. This time, after my reset, I finally have the RMEFirefaceUSB.kext file... well, the driver still closes when I try to launch it, but I think it's because it's the first time installation...!

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Hi, I've updated my M1 macbook pro running Sequoia 15.5. I have a fireface UC. I restarted my laptop in recovery mode and made sure to enable "Allow user management of kernel extensions from identified developers" Then I restarted my comp and installed the USB Series Kernel Extension Driver. Before restarting I made sure to hit allow in system settings on the driver before rebooting my comp again. Then I download the RME USB Series Flash Tool and when I double click on it, nothing happens. It looks like mac tries to run it but it never opens.

I have RMEFirefaceUSB.kext in /Library/Extensions
And my fireface UC is recognized in my system report as connected.

Not sure what to try next! I tried installing the driver kit as well to skip the firmware update. I made sure both the RME GmBH is enabled, and de.rme-audio.dkusb  at /Library/SystemExtensions/[longstring] is enabled in the driver extensions in login items, but still have had no luck.

Hello there!
Guess who's finally back at their problem? Yep, it's always the same.

Setup:
MacBook Pro M1 Max
Sequoia 15.5
DriverKit v. 4.27
Kernel Extension v. 3.35

Problem:
Fireface USB setting doesn't launch after the reboot

I've installed the DriverKit v.427, then the Kernel extension.
Every instructions for the installation of the driver were followed. Even the "kmutil trigger-panic-medic" command, a re-installation... however, Fireface USB still doesn't want to launch.

I've checked every files, and when I go to /User/Library/Preferences, I only have the "de.rme-audio.dkusbsettings.plist" file, no trace of a Fireface or Totalmix mentioned in the user's guide. Might be a dummy question but: can it be linked?

I noticed something "funny" during a try : at the first installation, when I go in the setting of my Mac / General / Extension, the RME driver is here. Then, I've installed the Kernel Extension.
However, after a reboot, it disappear! No trace, but the RME GmbH is still allowed in the background extension.
When I open a terminal and enter

systemextensionsctl list

0 extension(s).

I also checked the /Library/SystemExtensions folder, no RME file.

However, I made sure that the security is reduced, and I've disabled the gatekeeper.

Tried to re-install the DriverKit, but without the Kernel.
Everything went fine, and I have now the de.rme-audio.dkusb in the list when I ask for the system extension from the terminal.
The de.rme-audio.dkusb.dext file is in the /Library/SystemExtensions folder.

BUT. I have no FirefaceUSB.kext file in /Library/Extensions.

Should I try to keep a copy of the .kext file to put it in the folder after reinstalling the Driverkit?
(Honestly, I might try tomorrow ha ha)

I really need my Babyface Pro FS to work (well, more the driver, the audio interface is recognised by my Macbook), so I'm kinda desperate ha ha
(Sorry for the pretty long message, I'm updating it while there's no reply. And also, sorry for my poor English, it's not my natal language!)

Thanks in advance!

In my case, it just works.  Run the installer and follow the instructions.

I did it the very first time with only the DriverKit but : nop, it didn't work in my case.
There was no .kext file, and Fireface didn't launch after the reboot (well, it's not like it's working right now so-). That's why I tried to install the Kernel extension after the Driverkit, and if I do, I indeed have the .kext file (but, not the rest).
At the end, I'm just testing every possibility lol

So, maybe I'll delete everything again and try with just the Kernel extension (I didn't try this one too ha ha)

EDIT: Tried with just the Kernel extension, but I've just launched the installation, did not do anything else at the moment (so, no command).
I don't have any file related to RME in /User/Library/Preferences, not even the "de.rme-audio.dkusbsettings.plist" file that I usually have with the driver kit. Will try later to "kmutil" and... well, let's see what happens?

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Hey RME Peeps,  I've read through much of the recent posts regarding the OS issue with USB interfaces.  So what are peoples' experience with the new update?  I ended up selling my Digiface Dante last Spring as I was under the impression the issue could not be resolved - RME was not very communicative about a solution or working on a solution.

With that said - I would love to have a digiface dante interface back in the fold-  I'm using a MBP with M3 processor. Is the issue resolved?

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

I'm not upgrading to os 15.6+ yet, because the current os 15.4 is warning me that Rme won't work in the next update, and now I'm running kernel 3.35. Has anyone tried 15.6 if you're running a kernel extension and not a shell?

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Running 15.6.1 here with Kext driver and all is fine (UFX III).

873

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Thanks, but kext 4.27 and subsequent modifications will work on any subsequent macOS. I'm only interested in whether kernel 3.35 works with 15.6+? Because I intend to work only with kernel drivers in the coming years, I personally will stop updating macOS because of the kernel. The only thing that would be bad is if IT RME stops improving the kernel for UFX III. Personally, I'm not interested in kext or CC, but only kernel and USB3.. Because on UFXIII there will be no other faster connection than USB3.. In my dreams, I would like a separate kernel driver and flash update without CC and only all the processor resources to go to MADI and USB3, and I personally don't need compressors, equalizers or other FX in totalmix if it takes up % cpu resources in RME.

874

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

4.27 is not kext it is DK driver ( driver-kit driver)

post 872 above confirmed the Kext does work with the new MacOS. The Kext seems to be the 335, Gr8h8m otherwise would have reported it.

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Yes, I meant that I don't want DKit. I only use kernel extensions, I thought 427 was called kext. I still have an old madiface on the e34 connection, which works fine via an optical cable with ufx3, and also on the old kernel driver, and on an i7 macbook 2014 ... but it all works fine, recording to the ripper and all kinds of measurement plugins, also with madiface via ssl alpha madi 24 i/o for hardware FX.

Hi Monotremata,

I currently use my Fireface UCX II via kernel extension on MacBook Pro M4 Pro running macOS 15.7 Sequoia without any issues and rock solid performance. I do not want to rock the boat since I have the impression that with macOS 26 Tahoe I need to switch to Driver Kit. I have not found a clear advice on the RME website if upgrading is a good choice at this moment.

Can you please share your system setup? Do you use the kernel extension or the Driver Kit? What RME device do you use? And was your computer new with macOS 26 Tahoe pre-installed or did you upgrade? If you did an upgrade, how did you use the RME drive, as a kernal extension or Driver Kit?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience and setup with us.

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Hi,

I'm new here, this is my first post. I'm using a Babyface pro fs, mac mini m4 pro and mac OS Tahoe, which was working perfectly until I installed the lates Mac OS tahoe updates. Now It's not working, total mix does not start although it has a white dot beneath it it does not show up, I tried to reinstall everything but it does not work it won't launch the installation window. I did the whole reduced security for kernel before I upgraded to Tahoe and after.

Please Help! I don't want to downgrade to macOS Sequoia and reinstall everything on my computer because RME did not update it's drivers or I don't know for sure what is the issue but it does seem to be that RME didn't catch up to the latest updates on MAC computers.

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Hi Erick, welcome to the forum.
Here also Tahoe, Totalmix works fine with the Digiface USB DK driver, all fine.
What is this white dot ?

Sure the driver is switched ON ?
MacOS system preferences / general / startup items and extensions
scroll down to driver extensions and hit the little i-icon right side
A switch may reveal.

And you don't need to reduce any security, this is only need in some cases for the installation of a driver, after successful installation one can set back all security settings to normal.
It is possible in your case the upgrade of the entire MacOS did reset (switch off) extensions.
Don't panic.

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Hi,

Just a quick update.

My Mac Mini M1 running macOS Sequoia, which never had any RME software installed on it, was collecting dust. So I used my Mac  Mini to test the RME kernel extension if it would run on macOS after upgrading to macOS Tahoe.

On my Mac Mini, I installed the RME kernel driver as instructed on the RME website. Which is the same way I used to install this driver on my MacBook Pro M4 Pro. My Fireface UCX II was working without any issues on the Mac Mini.

Then I upgraded my Mac Mini to macOS Tahoe. And everything was running without any issues. Also Logic Pro 11 and Arturia software are working without any issues. This gave me the confidence to upgrade my MacBook Pro to macOS Tahoe.

My MacBook Pro is running without any issues and so is my Fireface UCX II and Arturia software. TotalMix, Fireface USB Settings and DigiCheck NG are running perfectly. My RME ARC USB is working perfect. My Logic Pro 11 projects are also working without any issues. Logic Pro also uses my Fireface without any issues. The RME kernel extension and RME software on my MacBook Pro were  installed before the upgrade. I did not need to reinstall any software. Everything is working after the upgrade to macOS Tahoe.

After reading that other people with different RME products have issues with macOS Tahoe, I do not know if it is RME product related or Mac that my Fireface UCX II is working without issues after upgrading.

[EDIT]
I use RME Kernel Extension for Mac v3.35, TotalMix v1.99, and DigiCheck NG v0.93.

The RME Settings app is - as far as what I saw - already switched on. But when using the Kernel driver there is another entry in this dialog with RME in its name that needs to be enabled as well. This seems to be a new 'feature' of Tahoe.

Hey Matthias.

In Windows 11 on a decent Laptop, my RME Babyface Pro FS delivers an RTL measurement at the lowest buffer setting at 48k of around   3.3ms <-> 3.5ms and its rock solid - Amp Sims play and feel like "real".

If I grab an Macbook Air M1 and use the new USB Series DriverKit Driver  in Tahoe with the same RME Babyface Pro FS, will I be able to achieve the same or better or worse RTL Latency than my Windows / Babyface Setup RTL (?)

Many thanks agaain smile

890

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

I would say the same should be possible. Better - no, as this requires below 32 samples buffer size, and is not guaranteed to work reliably on later macOS (haven't tested Tahoe yet for that).

Huge thanks again Matthias smile

Lastly - I just noticed the pre-existing "standard"  Mac drivers - 2024-10-16  driver_usb_mac_3223.zip - are also on the site for d/l.

In terms of ultra low RTL [and stability]  would you suggest that these  "older"  drivers are still perhaps the best way to go for ultra low RTL and stability  ?   -or-  has the new  RME kernel extension  "driver" equaled or surpassed these  "older"  drivers  in terms of ultra low RTL and Stability ?

My sincere thanks again

Aha! RME tech support is claiming it's all a grounding issue and not a software or RME hardware issue. I'll try th Kernel Extension and see if it cleans it up.

I thought the DriverKit was supposed to be more "modern" and compatible? Do you have to boot into whatever they're calling the "lower security mode" now?
