Topic: UC Fireface Volume Problem

Just bought a new audio computer and Fireface UC and trying to set it up with Cubase 11.

I have my monitors connected to outs A1 & 2 and when I select L1 on UC, push knob and turn volume to zero my right monitor still has sound coming from it.

As I turn  knob clockwise the volume doesnt change on right monitor but the left monitor starts to produce sound.

What am I doing wrong?

Re: UC Fireface Volume Problem

It is certainly only a small thing. But there is no way around familiarizing yourself with the operating concept of TotalMix FX.
The best way to get started, in my opinion, is via the RME video tutorials, because they are very to the point. Without unnecessary blah blah they get to the point very quickly, so you don't lose any time here and get a complete overview of all important TM FX control functions in a short time.

After that you can see if my step by step guide in my blogs helps you.

And you shouldn't hesitate to take a look at the RME manual after this knowledge. Once you know certain basics it is also easier to understand.

Again to your problem.

Some general points / Windows:

1. check whether you installed the latest ASIO driver for your UC
    as of today: https://rme-audio.de/downloads/driver_usb_win_1212.zip
2. check whether you have the latest firmware installed to your UC
    as of today: https://rme-audio.de/downloads/fut_usb_win.zip

In Cubase :

3. check whether you loaded the proper RME ASIO driver (-> studio -> studio settings -> audio system)
4. check studio -> audio connections (F4) whether you added all neeed input and output channels of your UC
in this case check under "Outputs", whether you added a stereo bus for the UC output channels Analog 1+2 OUT

This stereo bus needs to be used in the main output of your Cubase project.

If you play audio from your project you should see audio
- in cubase:  on main output
- in TotalMix FX: middle row, "Software Playback Channel Analog 1+2 OUT" (assumed you use TM FX full- and not daw-mode)

Note: in this middle row of TM FX you find any audio coming from Windows / Applications, and this audio needs to be routed to the real HW outputs of your recording interface (bottom row of TM FX).

As a final step you need to route audio from "Software Playback Channels Analog 1+2 OUT" to any HW Output as you want or need.

In TotalMix FX

5. Check that submix mode is enabled (right side blue fields)
6. Select "HW output AN 1+2 OUT" in the bottom row of TM FX
Now you see the submix of HW Output AN 1+2 OUT
7. Turn all faders as needed for this particular output aka "submix"
So turn up the fader of SW playback channel AN 1+2 in the middle row
(and of all other channels that you want to hear in this submix)

Note: the terms "HW Output" and "submix" are mutually used ... every HW output of your recording interface is regarded as a submix. So in submix mode (hence the name) you select a submix from output and create your Mix / Routing
by SIMPLY turning up / down the faders of
- Top row: HW inputs (the real inputs on your UC)
- Middle row: whats being send from PC / Applications from RME ASIO (or WDM) driver

Thats it.

I will report back asap, thanks again

Re: UC Fireface Volume Problem

Hi Ramses,

I have familairised myself with a few of the videos etc and have gained some understanding of the basic principles of Total Mix but have not managed to sort my initial problem which I would like to expand on now.

What I have now noticed from viewing the total Mix screen is that when I turn the knob to change the volume of L1 outputs (my monitors connected to AN 1/2), it is changing the panning and not the volume?

Re: UC Fireface Volume Problem

Why not using TM FX to provide the routing and to save it as a snapshot ?!

Then you can investigate later what you can do in front of the UC and how.

Re: UC Fireface Volume Problem

Press and hold the encoder until the display shows "ON" (stereo mode).
