Topic: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

I'm having problems between my Mac studio and my UFX+.

Something is triggering a very horrible high frequency deafening squeal when i'm running heavy projects on logic x.

I'm running a Mac Studio M2ultra, RME ufx+ (via thunderbolt) and Ventura as an OS. I thought it might be because i was running my projects from a high speed external SSD or plugin issue but i've updated every plugin i use and logic is completely up to date. I've updated total mix to the latest version and even flashed and updated the interface

I've been working in the music industry for over 15 years and never experienced this before. I'm running a working studio and can't have people in as the noise is ridiculously painful. It's come to a point where i'm getting afraid to edit my projects!

I've attached a youtube link below so anyone who can help can see what i mean.

I must warn you to keep you speakers very low as it's quite a piercing noise.

Any help would be incredible. As i'm rather desperate and dont want to spend another stupid amount of money on another interface

The video has no noise in it, only your speaking voice...?

It's at the end of the video. please do be careful though as again it's quick intense and high pitched

The video is a short Loop-video and with set my Macbook speakers very loud there is no noise
May be Youtube did cut off the last part of the video because it is published as short video ?

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

There is no noise.
There is a small peak when you speak the word deafening, that's all.
Here is the photo of the waveform from your video :

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

I'm hearing it back multiple times on different devices and it's very prominent to me. i unmute the speakers at 10/11 seconds.

I've just uploaded it to soundcloud and cut just the point where the high pitch is audible.

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

Sorry there is only the spoken word "this" , no noise at all, are you kidding us ?
Already from watching the wave it's obvious there is nothing wrong !

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

I promise i'm not trolling or joking. maybe if you hear it on a different device? I've been hearing the audio on phones, 2 different laptops just incase there was an issue with the file.

I'm not trying to waste anyone's time i'm actually having this problem. if you look at the video you can see the software output AN1/2 well into the red

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

In the video I can see only the Logic project, not Totalmix.
But you answered my next question, is this noise burst visible in Totalmix ?
Ok it is visible on Hardware output channels 1/2

Is it also visible on the Software playback channels from Logic ?

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

Correction : I can see Totalmix
There is the red light on, ok, there was a signal clipping into red.
It is not audible in your uploads so far.

Let's find out if it comes from Logic or from the interface itself.
Keep looking at the software playback channels in Totalmix.

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

So it's coming from the software monitoring I;m not sure how you upload images on here so i'm just copying in another wetransfer with the screenshot with the highlighted marks

The help is very much appreciated btw (though im still not sure how you can't hear the sound)

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

Very good, now we are a step further.

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

I do upload the screenshot to https://imgbb.com and then open it in a new browser tab.
Then right-click into the image and copy image-address

Then paste the link into the image tag here in the forum post.

Your noise burst is coming from Logic.
Do you use a lot of plugins ?
Also non-Logic plugins (third-party-plugins) ?

There are plugins when in demo version who produce noise-bursts of white noise periodically
and other plugins when the demo periode is over starting with noise-bursts telling you you have to pay (super annoying)

In this case you have to go thru the entire project and switch off every suspect plugin.

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

I've always used loads of plugins from fabfilter, slate, soundtoys and softube etc and this has never occurred. Tbh since i've been using the M2ultra i'm not using even half the amount i used to but then again it's only really started once i switched from my old intel mac mini

Some plugins may lost the license by the migration from one to the other computer

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

I literally checked everything again today and made sure that everything was updated and all the licences were correct. I spoke to an attendant on the RME hotline this afternoon and he seemed adament that it was Ventura that was the culprit

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

You haven't yet updated the Mac to Sonoma ? I recommend to do so.

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

Literally waiting for it to do so as we speak. I'm praying that this is the issue as i've got clients in early tomorrow morning and most likely will stress test the same scenarios to see if something happens

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

If you play a youtube video from the internet is the noise also coming ?

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

No, it's just when i'm running heavy projects from logic. It's driving me crazy!! Literally bought the mac studio to not have an problems in this regard. I did find an article that talked about ventura glitching audio when the ram pressure meter goes into the yellow on the activity monitor

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

I can tell only from my MacbookAir, I went thru many OS upgrades with no problems, all is running fine, and this computer is overfilled with all kind of software from the internet.
Sonoma is the best MacOS so far for 25 years.

If the issue still persists, then you have to shrink the Logic project.
Every computer has it's limits.

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

Perhaps it really is the case that one or more VSTs generate noise at certain intervals, either because they are misbehaving or because they are in demo mode, not yet licensed.

To find this out, you would have to make a list of plugins and try them out individually in a fresh project to find the culprit, should this be the cause.

Can you record the noise using a portable recorder or a smartphone to get an impression of how it sounds?

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

The problem comes from your computer. The sound arrives in the playback row of Totalmix according to your video.
Test with a different software, not Logic. Do you have the same problem then? If you do not have the same problem,  you need to find the cause in Logic.

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

Sounds like high frequency feedback (most probably too high for MacBook speakers). That's not noise from plugins in demo mode, there is something different going on.

Re: Horrible glitch between totalmix and mac studio

I checked with Digicheck and can see it is a strong output at 12.5 kHz, in post 6 the image with the wave shows it as white wave, I was focused on something deafening and this wave is nowhere loud.
Too high frequency for the macbook speakers and also for my heavymetal damaged ears.
I would put an EQ into the masterbus in Logic and cut off the highs for a test. Lowpassfilter at 11 kHz or so.
