Awesome, starts to feel like a final version. I still think that it might be useful to make the left hand side of the Control Strip "grabbable", for resizing. Just to make the resizing option more obvious.

On macOS, holding shift while using the mouse scroll wheel over a fader reverses the direction of movement here, though this seems to be the case for classic Totalmix as well.

With shift down it moves in the (for me) correct direction, opposite of whatever the system setting is for "Natural scrolling". In any case it should be the same direction whether doing fine adjustments or not?

But I really wish you would take the opportunity and instead support horizontal scrolling when shift is down, and use another modifier for fine adjustments. Much more useful when navigating the mixer, imo.

There also seems to be an issue when CMD zooming all the way out, the channels start scrolling sideways.

Otherwise it looks awesome, great job!

Hello I'm quite new to Totalmix. But on my Mac mini, scrolling the mouse move the fader in the same direction while shift is pressed or not.  (Effectively the direction is strange if you're using "natural mode", as it natural from a paper point of view but not for a fader.) Holding shift  is doing only fine adjustments on my system.

I think what you are experiencing is a macOS preference to switch between "un-natural scrolling" while shift is pressed?

I totally agree we should be able to have horizontal scrolling (severals mouses get a wheel for that) for the 3 rows when the pointer is on the "metal plate"... it is a real pain to go on the dark slider.

Also, I'd be happy as a touchosc user to get "layout mixer" recall OSC messages, even if I can manage something  via ARC settings and sending a keyboard shortcut.

Beautiful anyway!

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for macOS

Behavior i find odd:
- new design has larger scale. I have to set it to 70% to have approximately the same scale as the old design (not an issue on itself, just odd)

issues:
- changing to 2row changes actual scale of the GUI, instead of collapsing the window (text and everything gets bigger)

things i'd prefer:
- the cog turning orange instead of a small orange dot - on the previous version the wrench was better visible from a glance. I think the cog turned yellow would make it easier to spot when looking for something. same for EQ and dynamics.

looks nice tho, kudos for including support for all the old interfaces as well!

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for macOS

Nice update! Big improvement for the most part from the previous version. Feels a lot more modern and slick than before.

I'd still love to see a bit more visual distinction between sections and features, there's so much more scope to use colour and shading in places so you don't have to rely so much on purely reading text. I'd love to be able to colour tracks, or shade them differently. Even a colour bar on the bottom or top of the track would be very helpful to direct our attention to specific areas.

The updates to the EQ and compressor are very welcome too - the compressor always felt too finicky to dial in quickly on projects and I actually ended up just buying some analog gear for gentle dynamics control on the way in. The updated GUI makes things nicer to use. IMO the taper of the Q control of the EQ is way too centred on very resonant shapes. I'd much prefer the majority of the resolution to be between 0.4 and 1 and less of the knobs range for anything above 1. Its rare that I'd use a Q tighter than maybe 2, and yet 2-9.9 occupies a large range of the controls.

In a more general sense, it still feels like the user is presented with a LOT of information at once, and at some point it would be good to try and make some sections more context dependent or customisable. For the short term it feels like a step in the right direction though.

Long time user but only comment every now and again on here. This is a huge improvement. I haven't created a rainbow but the colours and names I've setup now make much more sense to me. It overall looks a lot nicer too. No bugs that I've come across yet either.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for macOS

Nice job on the V2 beta thanks. Overall liking it. Just tried it today.

I use workspaces (WS) to switch between 1x, 2x sample rates & 1x and 2x 7.2.4 monitoring with UFX 3 as target.

When I first opened V2 beta I had a 1x stereo WS and it was fine. I tried to switch to my 2x stereo WS and TM V2 Beta crashed. I then tried to go back to V1.99 TM and the 2x WS crashed there also. to fix I had to load a 1x WS and then quit TM - which I guess updated the preferences file. When I reopened TM the 2x WS then loaded fine again in either V2 Beta TM or 1.99 TM.

Couple of other comments:

it took a couple of selections of the new "Toggle Old-New Design" function to get ALL of the window elements to scale freely. At first it seemed the side bar and Room EQ windows were tiny and way too small in the New design but a few switches back and forth between old and new got them to display as I think the designers intended. Also noticed only the frequency plot part of the room EQ window scaled bigger beyond a certain point. Past that point and only the frequency plot got bigger.

The old orange button design I thought was better where the whole button turns orange when engaged for things like Talkback, Loopback, Stereo etc. It's more eye catching IMO. This is not a big deal and I'm sure I would get used To it in time but this is my first impression.

For the longest time I have wished for TM to respond to a horizontal 2 finger left/ right swipe on an Apple Trackpad to scroll the row's faders left/ right while the mouse was hovering -anywhere- over one of the three rows of faders - not just when the mouse was hovering over the actual scroll bar of a row. Many windows in other programs allow this. I know beta release is not intended for new features but wanted to get this request on record.

Thanks again for all your continued hard work. You make it a joy to support the brand.

Kind regards

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for macOS

Congratulations on the facelift, it looks great!

I am testing the V2 beta 5 today.

I want to to say just a few things about Mute, Solo, Cue buttons:
- I think these buttons should really stick out a bit more than the other orange or blue buttons, like "stereo", "room EQ" ... Maybe the same argument applies to the trim buttons, but I never used these.
- The same for all the buttons right of the Main channel in Control Room (dim, mono, speaker B, ext. input, mute FX, talkback), they should stick out more when active.
- The visual difference between Muted and Muted by Group is not clear enough for me (it also wasn't in the old design).
- Mute groups color in the left group still has the old Mute color.
- I like how the Group master buttons for Mute, Solo, Fader look now, because (especially Solo) was always sticking out too much for me.

Generally, I don't get the (Non-)Capitalization in UI. Maybe it's a fashion to choose lowercased - that I don't like -, but it can't be argued that it is very inconsequent now, as if there were 2 concurring concepts.

Not really important for me, there is a visual clash of in the UI in context menu, which uses macOS standard colors and font.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for macOS

Getting into Beta 5 some more and I think I've discovered an issue.

In stereo channels the new Room EQ design now shows 2 knobs for delay and output. with the output knobs it doesn't matter if I move them both Linked or as separate left/ right, if I set them both to say -6dB, close the window, reopen the window the left channel always displays 0dB again. Tried saving REQ preset and saving the snapshot but this behaviour persists.

Testing if the number displayed on left output knob after reopening window is true or simply a display issue suggests it is a display only issue and the output gain of Left Channel does not actually change.

Kind regards

Agreed, same as with some of the buttons I mentioned, the boldness of the old design was replaced with exaggerated subtlety.

And one more, I think a playback channel that has its Width set to something other than +1.00 should have the gear icon lit in orange (like the output channels have it now when Loopback is enabled).

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for macOS

Firstly - congratulations on embarking on the redesign. Very exciting after all these years.
Secondly however, I must concur with others who find it dull and cluttered. I've tried all contrast settings and even using high I find it washed out and somehow very cluttered / busy feeling compared to the clarity of the old. Of course this could be a matter of just getting used to it, but I didn't feel like this when presented with the original TMFX - it seemed clear and fairly straightforward - admittedly many many years ago!

Yes that was my first TM too - pre FX - using the original Hammerfall cards. I've happily followed the development of TMFX (and RME) throughout its history. I trust them completely but wanted to share initial feedback. I've never had to squint at my monitor before using TotalMix FX!

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for macOS

I have to agree with a lot of the other comments, especially about the dull color of the control room buttons and their flat look, it will look much better if the CR column will be a little more 3D and if this brown / orange color could be changed to the same bright orange that is shown on the Room EQ graph / knobs (L).
I think it will give the interface a more unified look in general and will be much more visible.

Also, I think there is a bug with the delay and volume knobs at the bottom of the room EQ.
The L volume correction knob goes back to 0 (visually) every time you close and open the room EQ, even if you lowered it by 20dB before closing its window (but if you move the knob with the scroller the volume jumps to zero on both channels)

In stereo mode, the L knob of both the volume and the delay ms can adjust both L and R, but the R knobs adjusts only the R channel (not sure if this one is intentional)

Other than that, amazing update.

A couple more small ones from using Beta 5.

Every time I open a new workspace the side bar reverts to its tiny display size. Also not possible to double click a fader dB number and enter value numerically. Once I toggle Old - New design function both issues go away.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for macOS

Hey MC, loving the new interface. Such a step up over the already great TotalMix.

A few comments if you may entertain them...

  • My Madiface USB is silent until I launch the app (which doesn't auto-launch unlike TMFX 1.99). I presume this is just an early beta version bug? I see software channels flashing up and down in Digicheck, but my speakers are silent until I launch TMFX.

  • Just my 2c, but maybe increasing the contrast between the currently selected output channel vs other output channels would be a good move, on some lower quality screens this will be tricky to see. Even on my MacBook Pro screen (which is great) it's not the clearest. Maybe an outline around the currently selected channel?

  • When collapsing the control room section as a whole, if any monitor output EQ or channel settings pane was open, upon re-expanding the control room section these are now closed. Is there a way of remembering those settings?

  • Would it be possible to have a setting whereby assigning an output to the control room section doesn't move it to the right hand side of the window? Or at least, leaves it next to the other un-assigned channels in the output row? This has been a constant bug-bear for me and throws the alignment of channels off. Also for people coming in to use my studio who aren't familiar with TotalMix it's often a source of confusion.

  • A way to assign colours to channels without having to enter the Channel Layout dialog would be VERY good.

Thanks and looking forward to seeing how this progresses!

Alex

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for macOS

everything working fine so far.

1) The coloration of the channel backgrounds is a nice option, but the currently selected hardware output (in submix mode) can be even more difficult to see than before. The option to better highlight the active submix would be great, e.g. an orange frame, similar to the currently selected snapshot. I know it gets slightly brighter, but it is very difficult to spot, especially when the neighboring channels have different colors.

2) a vertical scrollbar for the options / snapshots / groups / etc. on the right side would be nice, or the option to change their order.
It is cumbersome to hit minus 3 times only to reach the recorder module when using slightly bigger scales with a small window size.

Thanks!!

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for macOS

Not sure if this is intended or a bug, but it still "feels beta":

When setting the Scale to bigger sizes in which the faders do not fit on the screen, it locks the automatic scaling of the channels, they do not change anymore when adjusting the window size.
This makes it tricky to scale the right side menu (options/snapshots/...) to anything above 70%.
Current workaround is toggling '2 row' on/off or temporally increasing the resolution.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for macOS

Seeing something similar to hselters on beta6 MBA M4 15.6.1: if set to 135% or 200 channels partially disappear and are not scrollable.

At the desk I use a three monitor setup: internal monitor + 2x 2560x1440 with one in portrait and one in landscape mode. I like to have TM on the portrait monitor where it fits perfectly @135%. But when switching to mobile use or moving the window to the internal window I lose access to some of the channels and the side menu.

Setting back to 100% sometimes makes them visible again.

Behaviour is persistent through restart of TM.
