Topic: Digiface AVB: no network connection, no network light

Currently trying to debug an issue with an RME Digiface AVB. Plugging in the device via USB to a PC, all the lights flash on, then turn off, with the USB indicator light turning green as expected. The device shows up in RME drivers and in the AVB Controller; however, plugging in an ethernet cable results in neither the network activity lights turning on, nor the lights to the side of the ethernet jack either.

Running the latest drivers released this month, both madiface and network drivers. Firmware is latest 270, using a USB 2.0 cable. I have a second Digiface AVB that confirms to work perfectly with the same cables and drivers; though it is running an older firmware. (I'm too scared to update it in case that'll break it too.)

Re: Digiface AVB: no network connection, no network light

The latest FUT has the number 270
The download link you can edit with the desired lower number for downloading older firmware.

Open the Madiface settings and read out the firmware number of the secundar unit.
You can test reflash the other unit with the older FUT to have both units with same firmware.

Did you play around and forgot one unit is set to CC-mode ?

Does this apply to the windows link as well? I will try again, but I don't think it worked last time i tried.

How do you toggle CC-mode? I believe in CC-Mode, the LED near the usb port would be white, not green?

In the new version USB-3 interfaces a CC-mode is implemented in the driver settings, Madiface USB Settings, at the bottom.
I don't know about the LEDs behavior in that case. You may try out.

Re: Digiface AVB: no network connection, no network light

I don't see a CC option in the Madiface USB settings on windows. Am I missing something?

I did miss it is for Mac, not yet in Windows

Re: Digiface AVB: no network connection, no network light

This seems like a hardware issue, you should contact your local RME distributor for a check up.

What I was afraid of... I wonder what happened but I guess I'll have to reach out.

The Network CC Mode is always active. Therefore you have to use the latest Windows driver that supports it.

Re: Digiface AVB: no network connection, no network light

The latest driver is 0.9908

Re: Digiface AVB: no network connection, no network light

Yep I'm running the latest network driver .9908 with avb controller 9908.108.

Don't think it's a driver issue tbh, when plugging the working unit into my Linux system without any drivers, the network port light will activate when a cable is plugged in, but it does not light up on the broken unit at all. This makes me think hardware or firmware issue.

Re: Digiface AVB: no network connection, no network light

This seems to be a misunderstanding. There is no CC mode for the Digiface AVB audio, only for network connection. And without a proper driver the DF AVB is a dead unit as it loads its functionality via that driver. So no way to use it under Linux.

Under Windows try a USB 3 cable to see if the issue relates to USB 2 operation. Also tell me the firmware version of the other DF AVB, please.

Yeah, I understand this. What I was trying to test is if under Linux, if the "broken" unit would successfully connect to the network, which I would gauge by the ethernet port light turning on. Plugging in the older working unit under Linux does turn on that light when an ethernet cable is plugged in, but not the other unit.

Using a USB 3 cable result in a blue light in both units, but still the same behavior (other than the expected differences between USB 2 and 3 operation). The working unit is running hardware revision 182. To clarify again, the "broken" one is on 270; driver version 1.08.

Re: Digiface AVB: no network connection, no network light

Is that a typo? Firmware 184 isn't even listed in the FUT readme, it must be from around 2018 if at all...

Re: Digiface AVB: no network connection, no network light

The working one is on 182, not 184. I don't think the firmware has ever been touched.

Just to clarify, I'm not sure if the one with the non-functinoal network port is broken because of firmware. Also, I only bring up the working one as an extra datapoint that might be useful for troubleshooting. The broken one still works just fine as a loopback device or for headphone output, just the network connection isn't working.

Thank you for you helping out so far though, sorry for the delay.

Re: Digiface AVB: no network connection, no network light

Hi huantian,
you probably missed to install the latest Driver. The CC version of the DF AVB is only supported by the lastest drivers under Windows. Mac OS: there is no driver needed. Either you downgrade the FUT or install the latest drivers.

Re: Digiface AVB: no network connection, no network light

The Digiface AVB will run without a driver as a network card. Linux is not testet though it may run (similar to Mac OS). But the AVB endpoint app is not ported to Linux, so it's only ethernet but no AVB under Linux. Under Windows you always need a driver, because network cards do not have raw sockets (promiscuous mode).
