Topic: ADI-2/4 Pro SE as crossover

Hi all,

my first post in this forum, as I am a happy RME owner since a few weeks.

My subwoofer has no integrated crossover for feeding satellites, so I want to use the ADI Line Outs for satellites and PH 3/4 for the sub, crossing at 100Hz. I would like to know which PEQ settings other owners are using, and if there’s anything else I should take care of.

Thanks and regards
Andreas

Re: ADI-2/4 Pro SE as crossover

Suggested basic mode for this purpose: DAC.
• SETUP / Options / Device Mode/DSD / Basic Mode: DAC.

I wouldn‘t slavishly stick to 100 Hz x-over.
The integration of a subwoofer is a good way to treat possible room modes.

The basic settings are:
• I/O / Phones Out 3/4 / Settings / Rear TRS Source: Ph. 3/4 [assigns the rear TRSs to channel 3/4 for independent EQ settings].

• I/O / Phones Out 3/4 / Parametric EQ /
EQ Enable: ON
Band 1 Type: Hi Cut
Band 1 Gain: [doesn’t matter for cut filters]
Band 1 Freq: 105 Hz
Band 1 Q: 0.5 (as starting point, adjust by ear or measurement. Low values give better impulse response).

• I/O / Line Output 1/2 / Parametric EQ /
EQ Enable: ON
Band 1 Type: Low Cut
Band 1 Gain: [doesn’t matter for cut filters]
Band 1 Freq: 95 Hz
Band 1 Q: 0.5 (as starting point, adjust by ear or measurement. Low values give better impulse response).

An important parameter is absolute phase.
Typically either the sub or the mains have to be phase reversed, but practically it has to be determined if that’s necessary or not:
• I/O / [select output] / Settings / Phase Invert: Both

With large, full range mains you shouldn’t cut their bass, but let all three speakers feed the bass.
This gives better control of room modes.

The little overlap is intentional, as usually the levels don’t add up perfectly in the crossover range.
Best to use a measurement tool to set everything up.

Once you found a proper level balance of the sub to the mains, double click on the VOL button links channel’s 1/2 and 3/4 volumes.

RME ADI-2 Remote app gives easy access to all parameters.

If you have an iDevice, AudioTools FFT turns the device into a full fledged, integrated precise and professional measurement system, 12 bucks well spend:

Re: ADI-2/4 Pro SE as crossover

Dankeschön, that‘s very helpful.

I think this is the setting for 12 dB slope. In case I want to have 24 dB, I have to add another EQ band at the same frequency, Q ~0,7 and plus or minus 12 dB gain, correct? As Band 2 doesn’t have the high/low cut options.

And… I don’t manage to get the volume settings of Line Out and PH34 linked. I have enabled Link in both tabs, but 3/4 does not react to the remote control. It worked before, earlier today, but I can’t get it working again. What am I missing?

Btw, I already bought the App based on your advice in another thread. Very nice tool.

Stay with the 12 dB/Octave slope.
24 dB/Oct. has too much phase shift, audibly distracting the bass timing.

To link the volume control:
Double-press the VOL key on device or the IR Remote, until the square in ADI-2’s display’s lower line surrounds both volume figures.

Thanks again, you made my day.

Re: ADI-2/4 Pro SE as crossover

Hi again,

I moved my system around and accidentally disabled dual volume. Now I can’t switch it on anymore. I double-clicked the hell out of both the button on the remote and the volume knob, but it only switches between Line Out and PH34. Do you have any advice?

You could try to
- use the ADI-2 Remote Software or
- reload the (hopefully stored) previous config or
- reload the factory setup or
- reset the device (further information see manual ch 14.2).

Re: ADI-2/4 Pro SE as crossover

Thank you

How can I link the two volume settings via the Remote SW? There are the Link buttons, but I never figured out what they are good for. Is it via those? I have to admit that I want to avoid a factory reset.

Dual Volume activates when

-leaving VOL-menu via other front panel function button than VOL

or

-when getting kicked out from VOL-menu via automatic timeout

To de-activate Dual Volume, press the big volume knob on some of the ADI´s Top Screen (i.e. not-menu) view.

Re: ADI-2/4 Pro SE as crossover

Unfortunately that doesn’t work either.

Re: ADI-2/4 Pro SE as crossover

Sitting in front of my ADI-2/4 Pro SE:

Hitting the on-device VOL-button (not the VOLUME control) twice, activates Dual Volume, every time.

Hitting the VOL button on the IR remote, or the on-device VOLUME control, switches between controlling channel 1/2 or 3/4, and sometimes activates Dual Volume, sometimes not, with me not recognizing any system behind it.

Re: ADI-2/4 Pro SE as crossover

I am not 100% sure, but if I remember correctly, then it was possible in the past to switch between volume for
- 1/2
- 3/4
- 1/2+3/4
by simply pressing the big "VOLUME" knob, not the first of four smaller buttons named "VOL".

I think this changed to make toggling between Ph/Line through the big VOLUME knob more intuitive.

Now DUAL Volume moved to the "Vol" key.
But this only works if the key is not remapped to another function.
Therefore, I had trouble to find DUAL Volume.

DUAL Volume is not that important for me, but I liked the functionality when it was bound to the "VOLUME" knob.

The "VOL" Button I prefer to use for "Toggle View" as it is easier to push compared to the buttons (1) and (2) on the right side.
It is also very useful to leave a config menu as it brings you directly to the main display modes.

The best workflow is for me with the following (re-)mapping:

Volume button ("old style") to toggle between volume setting for 1/2, 3/4 and 1/2+3/4 (DUAL volume)
- Vol (1) Toggle View
- I/O (2) Toggle Ph/Line
- EQ (3) EQ+B/T+Ld 1-4 (on/off)
- SETUP (4) Mute all

Feature request

I think it would be cool if it could be made configurable so that also the VOLUME button could be mapped to the old function to toggle between the two channels and DUAL volume.

I prefer Toggle Ph/Line mapped to the I/O key as those keys are easier to push and then I have direct access to the most important/most often used functions with the thumb without having to move the hand/thumb a lot.

Other people might have other wishes; therefore, the request to make also the big VOLUME knob remappable.

EDIT: I changed the text completely to make it more understandable.

Re: ADI-2/4 Pro SE as crossover

Many thanks, guys, it’s solved.
For some reason it works again with the volume button (not the big knob). Don‘ know what I did, but now it’s fine. It still doesn’t work via the Remote, but I can happily live with that, since I only wanted to turn it on again and leave it.
Thanks again for your support.

Re: ADI-2/4 Pro SE as crossover

Check the firmware version of your ADI and update to the latest one if you haven't already. That kind of glitching doesn´t seem normal behavior of ADI. Could be caused by older, still buggy firmware.

Without re-programming the function buttons (i.e., those "remappings") and with the latest 267/128 -firmware, at least the ADI-2 Pro FS R works exactly as described in my previous post regarding the permanent Dual Volume setting:

visiting VOL-menu´s second page "Dual Volume" and exiting there as described, Dual Volume stays active. Rectangle in status bar around both outputs.
First press of big volume knob or IR-remote´s VOL -button toggles it off: status bar output-rectangle returns to its normal state, to toggle between 1/2 or 3/4.
It activates again via described -kind VOL-menu re-visit. And goes off with big volume knob / IR-remote VOL-button presses. Every time, again and again. No any kind of bugging there.

Could there still be such a severe bugging regarding only the 2/4 Pro?
I can confirm that at least the ADI-2 Pro works like a Swiss atomic clock in that regard.

Please also note that if you have remapped a function key, the key’s original function — opening the corresponding function menu/advancing next menu page/closing the menu — requires a LONG press.

Re: ADI-2/4 Pro SE as crossover

I am currently traveling, but will check the Firmware at the weekend and report back.
