Topic: Used RayDAT for Linux-Worth It?

Planning to get a RayDAT for LMDE 7. Just wondering if a used one is a good idea: maybe there are some recalls or something I don't know about, or things to look out for.

There's one on sale now, but it's missing the barn doors for two of the ports. ChatGPT said that can be an issue with stable connections, while the seller claims it's working for them.

So yeah, maybe RME's going to have a sale soon or something smile Anyone using a RayDAT on Linux? I know there's only community support at this time, but that seems sufficient.

Re: Used RayDAT for Linux-Worth It?

If the barn doors are missing, then the optical port is not protected against dust and dirt.

I would ask the seller to provide the results of a loopback tests for all ports.
Connect:
ADAT1 OUT---->ADAT1 IN
ADAT2 OUT---->ADAT2 IN
ADAT3 OUT---->ADAT3 IN
ADAT4 OUT---->ADAT4 IN
Set clock source to internal.
And then a screenshot of RME driver settings. You should see "sync" on all ports.

Then you can buy TOSLINK dust covers to protect the ports where needed.

Two missing/damaged protective covers are a material defect and the price should reflect it accordingly.

Make sure you have a written agreement for a full refund if the loopback test results cannot be reproduced on your end, or if any port shows sync issues after delivery.

As enforcing a refund agreement with a private seller can be difficult in practice, I would focus on used items without such defects.

Ask the seller if he is the original owner and if he still has the purchase receipt. Also ask how the barn doors went missing, a straight answer (or lack of one) tells you a lot.

Thank you very much! I'm incorporating your advice, which will definitely help me make the best decision. Cheers.

I would ask the seller, if plug of the cable fits there firmly and is not loose....

I have "managed" to tear off barn door on one of the ADAT ports on Octanic and the plug is very loose since then. I have to get it repaired. :-(

But there is sync and things work OK, just cable may loose connection very easily...
