Topic: Automate sync settings between snapshots?

Hello. UFX+ and TM FX mixes. I've been thinking if it is possible to automaticaly sync mixes among snapshots.

I have two main Snapshots. One is for live performance with four piece band and in control room section we have four stereo outputs for IEMs. So we use the two phone outs for two and (ADA8200) four adat outputs for two stereo IEM mixes. That's live, all of the outputs in UFX+ are used for mono instruments/backing tracks outputs to FOH (including XLR 1 and 2 outputs).

Now when at my home studio I have the second snapshot,.I switch the two XLR outputs to Main Out for studio monitors and work on our backing tracks session, and they appear in the Control Room section as Main Out. So when when working on live set with backing tracks, or rehearsing with the band, I always have them switched (the 1 and 2 XLR outputs) to main stereo out. Is there any way to automaticaly sync mixes between these two snapshots, except obviously for XLR Main Outs?

Re: Automate sync settings between snapshots?

Sorry I do not understand the problem.
For each of the scenarios / use cases you can create a customized routing and store it to a snapshot "as you need".
In different snapshots, you can even have different port assignments for "Main Out", "Main Out B", Phones1..4.

Re: Automate sync settings between snapshots?

Yea I expected it wouldn't be clear.
I mean, when on rehearsal/home mixing, I constantly change mix setting for IEMS, and then I need the exact same mixes for IEMs when performing, and the two XLR main outs are used as mono instruments outputs. In other words, we set IEM mixes on rehearsal, and need those same mixes when performing. I would leave the main 1 and 2 XLR outputs only for studio monitors, but even with ADA8200 attached, we don't have enough outputs for all backing tracks and instruments outputs. I know, the solution would be to get another Ada8200, but for for now I'm trying to figure out sth before I get one. So I constantly have to switch 1 and 2 xlr outputs between Main Out (monitors at home) and two mono instrument outputs to foh (live performance).

Take another snapshot for it ?!

Re: Automate sync settings between snapshots?

You can also select between 9 (of in total 30) Workspace Quick Select Slots with 8 Snapshots each,
using the key combination ALT-1 .. 9

Then you can use
WQS Slot #1 of 30 - ALT-1 - with Snapshots 1..8 for home
WQS Slot #2 of 30 - ALT-2 - with Snapshots 1..8 for performances

Mhm that is what I do, I have two separate Snapshots for the two situations. But When I do some mixing in one (say at rehearsal with two monitors, main out in control room section), then I have to manually change ALL the mixes in the other snapshot for live performance when the XLR outputs are set to mono instrument outputs.

Re: Automate sync settings between snapshots?

Do you think it could solve the issue if you had dedicated outputs/submixes for
- studio
- studio and live
- live
Maybe you would need another AD/DA converter, but then you can prepare the submixes for every port as needed.
You could copy or mirror submixes between ports.
Or create up to 4 fader groups so that multiple faders move at the same proportion.

As you have the UFX+, an excellent recording interface, you can add devices easily via MADI and increase the port capacity as needed. I am not sure whether this entirely solves everything, but maybe most of it.

Ok that I wasn't quite aware of that each workspace has its own set of snapshots, although this should be obvious.

Although I am quite confused now. Having installed TM 2.03 I'm quite sure that in previous versions Mixer Layouts (on the left hand side of TM, under groups) were previously called Workspaces. Now there's 6 of them. In File menu there's still Workspaces which you can store on your drive. Both can be stored - Workspaces ad Snapshots. I always did save snapshots to my disk bc it was always confusing, when turning on the unit, there's most of the times a prompt if load settings from TM (computer app) or from the unit. I never knew which to choose and what would come up, that's why I always save my setting to a file.

Just studio is another story, not an issue here.
The whole thing is about rehearsing -> setting IEM levels for each band member -> using those levels/mixes later live. That's bc we do not have a dedicated IEM nor backing tracks engineer, I as a band member play live instruments and do IEMs and do backing tracks. So I don't have time when live to tweak IEMs or backing tracks, I do everything on the fly just so so, so I really have to prepare everything at home and it has got to be perfect, when live just minor changes. But yea, getting another converter will solve the issue, Ada8200 for now, thinking of getting RME M-32 DA Pro II to solve it once and for all.

Ok I think this is THE solution. Thank you! I'll just keep to one snapshot but change Main Out to mono outputs, but store settings for each on an extra channel output mix setting (not in use, not physical) and then copy it back. Brilliant!!!!

Yea I know this is doable, but what would be the benefit from it for me? Not saying it wouldn't be but it's not clear to me.

I wanted to draw your attention to this feature, as well, in case it might also be useful in your setup.
But tbh, I didn't have a concrete idea that I could explain to you.

I never knew which to choose and what would come up, that's why I always save my setting to a file.

The snapshot contains only the channel settings and the routing of this particular snapshot.
The workspace contains **ALL 8 snapshots** and GUI size and Position.
I wouldn't save single snapshots, if there is no good reason for it.
Better to use different workspaces for several locations or use cases.
You should save your workspaces to disk to a location that is in your daily backup.

In parallel, you can use Workspace Quick Select for quicker workspace handling.
And as I mentioned, you can access the first 9 of 30 by key commands: ALT-1 ... ALT-9 (Apple uses the Option key).
This gives you quick access to 9*8=64 snapshots.

BTW the location of the up to 30 Workspace Quick Select files is in the TotalMix folder of your users roaming profile.
Windows: C:\Users\<loginname>\AppData\Local\TotalMixFX\presetN.tmws (N=1..30).
So it's good to back this up as well; it should be part of your system backup.

You mentioned that it was irritating for you that after logging in, TM FX sometimes prompts you, to choose settings from the device or TotalMix. This only happens, when you disconnect the device and operate it in stand-alone mode.
If you reconnect it to the computer and log in, then TM FX recognizes a difference between the remembered last settings
and the devices modified the config after operation in stand-alone mode.

For your understanding, TotalMix FX writes a so called "last-settings" file for every recording interface.
It becomes updated of TotalMix FX quits (either by you or when the computer shuts down).
In TotalMix FX it is even possible to enable an option in Preferences, that the file becomes updated every minute.
The file is written to this location in your user profile. For me (having HDSPe MADI FX and UFX III):
C:\Users\<loginname>\AppData\Local\TotalMixFX\last.HDSPeMADIFX1.xml
C:\Users\<loginname>\AppData\Local\TotalMixFX\last.FirefaceUFXIII1.xml

By comparing this file with the config in the recording interface TM FX can detect that a change happened.
In this case TM FX prompts you and wants to know:
- whether to keep the config on the device which was modified in stand-alone operation or
- to load the last settings from the computer, the version when the device was last connected to your computer.
Usually it makes sense to choose the settings from "TotalMix FX", the last setting on your computer.

If the prompting nerves then use a setting in preferences (F2) that TM FX should prefer the settings on the computer,
to load this last settings file. Then you never get prompted, problem solved wink See here my preferences:

Re: Automate sync settings between snapshots?

Perhaps little off topic:
There is also a menu item "Preload all Snapshots". This allows loading "only" the 8 snapshots from a workspace file without altering the current effective settings...

Ok so Workspace, which can be saved to file, isn't exactly the same as Mixer Layout?

I'm not not sure what these do exactly. I feel like I need to read the manual at this point. But if somebody would be willing just in short explain to me which does what.

Snapshots - these can contain specific mixes but also as I noticed - mixer layouts.

Mixer Layouts - I'm not sure what exactly these do, bc mixer layouts are contained in Snapshots.

Workspaces - again these, I suppose contain all my settings and mixes.

So when I save my Workspaces - this is the only working solution for me to save my mixes and mixer layouts.

So what's the difference among these three categories?

I explained the difference between Snapshot and Workspace in post #13:

"The snapshot contains only the channel settings and the routing of this particular snapshot.
The workspace contains **ALL 8 snapshots** and GUI size and Position. [...]
"

Now Mixer Layout. Is about the settings under TM FX: Options -> Channel Layout, e.g.:
colors of channels and which of them are hidden.
You can also use it to see only e.g. monitoring channels and channels of particular devices like M-1620 or 12Mic.

Loading a Workspace restores all Snapshots, Mixer Layouts, Fader Grous and what not,
and reactivates those as you saved the workspace.

Re: Automate sync settings between snapshots?

Exactly.

Snapshots were basically intended to provide changes on the fly ("scenes") for one device, workspaces to enable full reconfiguring ("total recall").
Snapshots from the snapshot-list in TotalMix are already loaded in the RAM, so no file-system access is necessary.
With pre-load function you can load the "next" 8 scenes...
