Topic: TotalMix FX 2.1 now available as beta

After the successful alpha phase the next version of TotalMix FX (2.1) is now ready for public beta testing. The first release should already be very mature and free of severe bugs, but as with most modern software it is impossible to guarantee that, so take care when and how you use it.

The biggest update in 2.1 is the support for Global OSC, which already made waves throughout the community and third parties. We even went ahead and made a Global OSC based plugin for the popular Elgato Stream Deck, as proof-of-concept. Details and download here: https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.ph … 75#p252575

2.1 beta 4 is based on Alpha 8 (see above link), and adds these changes and fixes:

- Option added to Preferences: Do not color channel names. Channel names stay white when channels are colored, and black when using the Light Theme, ensuring better readability.

- Shift function is back when adjusting elements (like faders) by dragging with the mouse (here fine mode), in all zoom states

- Windows are not rearranged when devices are connected later on (adopted from TM FX Remote beta)

- Fix for loading workspaces with maximized windows (adopted from TM FX Remote beta)

- Windows only: Updates to display and input limitations for Volume and Pan (like volume set to 100 via the edit dialog)

Global OSC related stuff:

- OSC limit for the fader has been extended upward to avoid disrupting fader group relationships

- Sends playback channel and record signals, but no longer sends reverb for devices without reverb

- Last column (error counter) removed from OSC statistics window because it was ineffective

2.1 beta 2 adds these changes:

- Windows only: Fixed few sample offset in window position when reopened at the screen border (so called Dandruff effect)

- Global OSC: added /sendstate

- Global OSC Windows only: an empty adress field no longer causes a broadcast send

2.1 beta 3 adds these changes:

- Windows only: TM FX Remote could not acces the host's Workspace Quick Select slots

- Mac only: Preferences dialog reworked

2.1 beta 4 adds these changes:

- Added color for Talkback channel name

- Fixes visual glitch with ‘Load Groups with Snapshot’ option

- Another fix for window position issues

Re: TotalMix FX 2.1 now available as beta

Hello, can I try totalmix fx 2.0 on mac mojave osx? 10.14.6? will it work? (mac mini intel chip 2018 model), minimum requirement is 10.15 osx but the beta version works above high sierra...?

Re: TotalMix FX 2.1 now available as beta

TotalMix FX 2.x uses Metal hardware-accelerated graphic routines, therefore usually requires macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or up. The Mac Mini from 2018 was Metal compatible, so it should work.

For people for who this does not work, like with me, a little to old gfx card, dxreport says dx12 (hardware11.1). Will tmfx v1.99 keep working with newer drivers and also on new yet to be released hardware?

I think what BonJavi is referring to is the "Dandruff effect"? I've also noticed this issue still exists in beta3. The window height still increases by a few pixels after a restart.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.1 now available as beta

There is, IMHO, small inconsistency in interface. Coloured faders have coloured line just below a name. White/uncoloured faders have no line under the name. Should not there be also the line? In this case white.

It is not a new thing, it was probably so all the time, at least it is the same in 2.03. I just have not spotted it....

Reporting a problem: DAW All MIDI Communication Lost After Second TotalMix FX Exit.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Launch TotalMix FX and leave it running.

  2. Start the DAW.

  3. Close TotalMix FX using File → Exit.

  4. Launch TotalMix FX again.

  5. Close TotalMix FX a second time using File → Exit.

Result

Immediately after the second exit of TotalMix FX (since the DAW session was started), all MIDI communication within the DAW is lost. This includes the Mackie Control protocol connection, communication with the Novation ReMOTE SL MIDI keyboard, and all other my MIDI devices. The issue has been consistently reproduced with Fender Studio Pro 8 and Steinberg Nuendo 15. Restarting the DAW restores normal MIDI communication.

Additional Information

The behavior differs depending on the MIDI backend used by the DAW:

Steinberg Nuendo 15 with MIDI Port Setup → Use Device "WinRT MIDI" enabled: MIDI communication is interrupted immediately after the second exit of TotalMix FX, but it is automatically restored after a short delay.

Steinberg Nuendo 15 using the Windows MIDI / DirectMusic backend: MIDI communication is permanently lost after the second exit of TotalMix FX and is not restored until the DAW is restarted.

Thanks again for the very detailed and thorough report. Unfortunately we were not able to reproduce the issue. Taking into account that the procedure to cause it involves a very unusual restart of TM FX, we kept this on our list, but also have to continue with more severe issues.

Thank you for the update.

Of course, the priorities are completely understandable, and I fully agree that more severe issues should take precedence.

In the meantime, I'll take a closer look at this issue on my side and try to investigate it in more detail. If I manage to identify anything significant—for example, based on analysis using Windows Performance Recorder (WPR) and Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA), or through additional testing—I will update the report with any relevant findings.

Hopefully, I'll be able to narrow down the conditions that trigger the issue or provide some additional clues.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.1 now available as beta

I am on Windows 11, testing 2.1 beta 4, UFX II.
Some behavior issues regarding channel names, renaming, and other:

1) When activating "names", for a channel that is set as talkback source and has a longer name (e.g. "ADAT 16"), the talkback icon is overlapping the text.

2) Normally when hovering over a channel name with the mouse pointer, it lights up, and double clicking opens the rename window — this is not working for assigned channels (e.g. assigned as main out or phones). They can smoothly be renamed from Channel Layout, but it is much harder to navigate in a recording session.

3) When a channel is set as talkback source (F3 → Set talkback input), the "hover and double-click" to rename behavior is disabled (because "Talk" cannot be renamed), and enabled when talkback is removed (F3 → Set talkback input none); however, the enabling and disabling of "hover and double-click" does not update until toggling "names" off — on — off after changing F3 → talkback input.

4) The coloring of the Talk channel line under the name still feels buggy. For a white channel the line is blue; changing the color to another changes the color of the line; assigning talk to already red channel gives red text with a blue line. I think it would feel more robust if the line were the same color as the text at all times.

5) When crossfeed is enabled and I want to disable it, I have to select "crossfeed" from the dropdown menu, which is counterintuitive.

6) Clicking Help → TotalMix FX Help, spins the mouse spinner for a second, but nothing is happening. I really want to know what the new shortcuts are big_smile. (I am hoping to finally have a shortcut for "names" for faster patch work).

7) Optional feature request — When working in submix mode, the synchronized submix selector under each fader is not useful in my workflow. I would be very, very thankful if there were an option to replace it with the channel name so I can see both the channel name (bottom) and the input name (top) at the same time. For example, I want to turn a potentiometer for kick gain on my ADAT AD converter. I see "Kick", I see "ADAT 11", I turn ADAT 11. Right now I see "Kick", I grab the mouse, I find "names", I lock my eyes on Kick, I click names, I see "ADAT 11", I turn ADAT 11, I switch names back — very slow, and I make mistakes in recording session soundchecks.

I am very happy about the v2.x update, big thanks to RME team!

Your point 2

Confirm, control room channel names do not allow user names.
Also in the channel layout the renaming with a user name does not work.

There is no perfect solution for this (Talk must be identified as Talk no matter what), and I also don't see the issue, except for 'good looks'. As the first character is overwritten you will still be able to know what input this is, as the channel number is typically at the end of the string.

That's an intentional restriction, as new users quickly lose overview and don't understand nothing anymore when easily changing the Control Room names to whatever. First this was disabled at all, later on we allowed it via the Channel Layout dialog for experienced users. But that's as far as we want to go.

In this matter, I had already suggested a new function here in the forum. The TotalMix Submix function is powerful and can be quite confusing, especially for beginners. The new TotalMix Version 2 includes colored frames for the respective channels. It would be extremely practical if you could use these colored frames dynamically to make the respective channel routings graphically visible via the mouse over function. Example: If I hold the mouse cursor over the (green) name of Output 1-2, then all assigned channels of the input level and the playback level that send a signal to Output 1-2 are automatically framed with a green color. At least as long as I hold the mouse pointer over the respective channel name. This should then also work in the opposite direction. If I hold the mouse pointer over a colored input or playback channel, the corresponding colored frames are temporarily marked on the assigned output channels. This functionality should remain able to be switched on and off in the settings as needed so that the old TotalMix veterans don't get grumpy. With this new function you could quickly overview all routings without having to click on the respective output channels. This would practically allow you to see the routings without having to see the fader positions of the corresponding channels. This could be very helpful.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.1 now available as beta

To see which Inputs and Playbacks are used by given Output may be investigated if one presses submix button in mixer layout section.

To see which Outputs use given Input/Playback may be investigated in dropdown list that opens when pressing bottom of fader section. But it shows original names, not user ones.

I agree that something like you suggest might be handy. Maybe implemented a bit differently, instead of frame dot or double line instead of single below fader name.

By the way, framing the selected output has been my idea.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.1 now available as beta

Over time I found out that it is better to use fewer colors not to overstress the eyes. Less is often more.
Therefore, I am not convinced that this is a good idea.
Additionally, consider that it is not mandatory that an output is colored.
It might be even more irritating that sometimes a color is used to visualize a submix by colorization and sometimes not.

Another thing has been mentioned by Kubrak. Learn to use what TotalMix FX offers to show a submix
- The name of the submix at the base of faders
- The little button called "submix" on the right side

Then I have doubts, that people understand the colorization at all if they do not understand submix mode.
They will, of course, see colors (or not, as I mentioned), but whether they draw the right conclusions out of it?! ...

As I mentioned already, sometimes less is more.
Read the manual and watch the YouTube videos; submix mode is no rocket science.

Submix mode is routing made flexible and "isi pisi".
Select an output, watch the fader setting of the top/middle rows, and voila, this is your routing for the selected HW output (aka "submix"; hence the name "submix mode").

Re: TotalMix FX 2.1 now available as beta

IMHO, what Trommeltotti suggests could have its use cases. Submix mode is fine and it does its job. But what is suggested would make it possible to visualy compare two submixes, for example.

And the dropdown list to see where to is routed given Input/Playback is not very intuitive (vertical vs. horizontal), comfortable (list may be very long for certain interfaces) and if user naming is used there is translation name challenge, mainly if some of Output faders are hidden....

I agree with you that using framing as suggested probably is not a way to go. Instead different way of marking could be used. Be it mark (something like loopback visualization) or say double line below the fader name instead of single line. (But TM would have to start using line also for white faders)

Sure, it may stay as it is, the information needed is already achievable, just not as simply as it could be. And, there is another thing, that comes to my mind. If I am not mistaken, RME considers to allow user change order of faders. Then what Trommeltotti suggests would be quite handy as "translation" from list of outputs that use given Input/Playback could become almost detective work for user.

I do not understand how this should work. You can only visualize one at a time.

Sorry, also here I do not understand the issue. What do you mean with "vertical vs. Horizontal"?

Feel free to use Viso. Sorry but I do not get the point what the issue is, and what should be solved exactly how.

Kubrak wrote:

What exactly do you regard as difficult, knowing that submix mode shows you the routing of a selected submix.
I think this is basic information/knowledge which is needed anyway, as a basis to understand any kind of visualization.

Submix mode will stay as easy as it is, no matter how you move the faders around in the top, middle, or bottom row.
The order of channels inside of a row doesn't change anything in regards to submix mode and how it works.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.1 now available as beta

One could compare submixes this way:
One submix would be visible as is now in non-Submix mode, one sees the faders. Second submix would be expresed visually (e.g. framing/mark/double line/ etc.)

Vertical-horizontal - list is vertical order, faders are horizontal order. But bigger problem is long list and RME default names in the list.

I did not speak about Submix mode, I spoke about investigation what outputs use given Input/Playback. Imagine, list
will say AN7/8, ADAT15/16 and MADI5/6. User uses user names for outputs, hides few outputs and changes their order. So, it is not easily visible, which outputs use that source. Mark them on request would be way more user friendly.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.1 now available as beta

First of all, thank you to everyone here for the lively discussion on this matter. To avoid any confusion, I would like to point out again that TotalMix has a submix function for the routing mode and a sub switch for the layout presets. The Submix Routing Mode allows the user to read out the respective channel fader positions of the inputs and playbacks on the selected output channel. The selected output name is automatically displayed below the inputs and playbacks. In contrast to free mode. This functionality can be confusing for TotalMix newbies. The Sub switch in the Layout Presets automatically hides all input and playback channels that will not send a valid signal to the selected output. This sub function actually corresponds to my feature request above in a slightly different way. However, you always have to select the respective output channel with a mouse click. With my suggestion above, all channels remain visible, and you can get a quick routing overview using the mouse over function. In addition, the temporary frame colors would simplify a quick overview. And as I already wrote. This new function should then be able to be activated under the settings or deactivated as usual.

One thing that often comes up and partly would solve the request is the fixed naming in the routing dialog (list). Unfortunately this list is not easy to build including user names - otherwise we would have done that long ago already...

Yes, I know that what seems simple thing (like naming thing in the list) may be close to impossible to add to old code. I take care for almost 35 years old code.....

And would not be visual presentation (using dot, double line below name or like) easier to implement? Then probably less people would ask for user names in that list as they would have visual marks on outputs (on request).

This fact makes my suggestion even more appealing. After all, you have been able to use the sub (in TotalMix 2 the submix) function in the layout presets for many years. It should therefore also be possible to create a temporary colored frame around the associated channel connections via the mouse over function. You could also use this opportunity to expand the color codes under the channel layouts. The current color selection is rather poor.
