Topic: Does anyone use a Nuimo contoller (from senic)

Hello

I´m using a Nuimo controller from senic via the Nuimo App and ControlPilot to control TotalMix under MacOS. It´s an easy setup and it works perfectly. Unfortunately the Nuimo App will no longer be supported by the next MacOS version (beause it`s an Intel based app).

Does anyone use the Nuimo controller with a different setup? (Yes, I already own an ARC but at home the Numio´s got the better WAF...)

Thanks a lot in advance.

And the relation to RME audio interface is how ?

Sorry waedi  and ramses - I accidentally published it. It´s edited now.

With the help of a KI this seems to be your demand:

For clarification, since the use case wasn't obvious from the first post:

The Nuimo Control is a wireless aluminium rotary encoder from Senic, originally sold as a smart home controller for Sonos and Hue. No audio product, but a good looking knob that can sit anywhere on a desk or shelf.

The chain is:
Nuimo --BLE--> Senic Nuimo app --keyboard shortcut--> ControlPilot --OSC--> TotalMix FX

So it ends up as a remote volume control for the TotalMix Control Room, i.e. the same job an ARC USB does, just cordless and living room friendly.

The weak link is the Senic app. Senic discontinued the original Nuimo apps for macOS, iOS and Android back in 2019, and it is an Intel-only binary. ControlPilot itself is fine, it is maintained and runs natively on Apple Silicon.

One correction on the timing though: you have more headroom than you think. macOS 26 Tahoe was the last release for Intel hardware, but Rosetta 2 keeps working. macOS 27 removes Rosetta during the upgrade, however you can reinstall it manually:
    softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license

Rosetta only goes away for good with macOS 28 in autumn 2027, apart from a limited subset for old games. So the setup will keep running for roughly another year, and indefinitely if you decide to stay on macOS 27.

For a permanent fix, the Senic app has to be replaced. The Nuimo does not announce itself as a standard BLE HID device, it uses a proprietary GATT profile, which is why nothing else picks it up. Senic did publish the SDK though:

    github.com/getsenic/nuimo-swift        (Swift / CoreBluetooth, iOS + macOS)
    github.com/getsenic/nuimo-linux-python (BlueZ)

A small native helper reading the gestures and sending either keystrokes to ControlPilot or OSC straight to TotalMix (default ports 7001 / 9001) would be the durable solution. No idea whether that SDK still builds against current
CoreBluetooth after nine years without maintenance, that would need testing.

If anyone here has already built such a bridge, that is what HE is looking for.

i never heard of this Nuimo thing.
Do you own a RME interface ?
With this Nuimo do you control the Mac loudspeaker volume ?
Or do you control Totalmix main out volume ?

The warning from MacOS "software intel-version not supported in the future" does pop up all the time I just ignore it.
It is not tomorrow and not next week, don't panic.
Ask Nuimo if they will make a new App.

Re: Does anyone use a Nuimo contoller (from senic)

OK, I see - this might be only interesting for s.o. who owns a Nuimo or is using it in a similiar setup.

I´m using the Nuimo to control TotalMix at home/ in my home office:
The Nuimo (hardware) sends it´s commands via Blootooth Low Energy to the Nuimo App on the Mac. In this App the commands are converted to shortcuts and these shortcuts, in turn, are evaluated by ControlPilot. ControlPilot sends the assigned commands to TotalMix (Volume up/ down, Mute, Speaker B, Dim and Mono).

Because MacOS won't support Intel based apps (like the Nuimo App) in the future, I hoped that there would be someone with the same problem who might have found a solution to this.

PS WAF means Woman acceptance factor, sorry.

PSPS Senic doesn´t offer any support to this product anymore, although it's a really nice piece of hardware.

(I'm afraid it's taking me way too long to answer...)

Re: Does anyone use a Nuimo contoller (from senic)

As I wrote, you have still one year until macOS 28 and theoretically you could stay a little bit longer with the older version. Another alternative. Try to write such an application with the help of Claude KI.

A raw skeleton of such a Python script looks according to Claude KI like this:

import asyncio
from bleak import BleakScanner, BleakClient
from pythonosc.udp_client import SimpleUDPClient

# take UUIDs from Senic-SDK ...
ROTATION_CHAR = "..."

osc = SimpleUDPClient("127.0.0.1", 7001)
volume = 0.5

def on_rotation(_, data: bytes):
    global volume
    delta = int.from_bytes(data[:2], "little", signed=True) / 2666.0
    volume = max(0.0, min(1.0, volume + delta))
    osc.send_message("/1/mastervolume", volume)

async def main():
    dev = await BleakScanner.find_device_by_name("Nuimo")
    async with BleakClient(dev) as client:
        await client.start_notify(ROTATION_CHAR, on_rotation)
        await asyncio.Future()

asyncio.run(main())

Open topics (untested) according to KI:

  • The UUIDs and the byte format of the rotation events. These are in the Senic SDK and have to be taken from there.

  • The scaling factor of 2666 comes from the Nuimo documentation for one full rotation. Whether that matches your firmware will only show up in testing.

  • TotalMix sends the current value back via OSC. It would be cleaner to read that return path on port 9001 instead of tracking the value inside the script. Otherwise the values drift apart as soon as someone moves the fader in TotalMix itself.

Downsides compared to Swift: no menu bar icon, no autostart without extra work. Both are solvable, a launchd plist for the autostart and rumps for a menu bar icon, if you want one at all.

One stumbling block remains: on macOS, Python needs the Bluetooth permission as well. That permission is tied to the calling process, so either the terminal or the Python binary. The dialog appears on first launch, and occasionally you have to help things along in System Settings under Privacy & Security.

Maybe this all can be fixed step by step with the help of the KI or a developer forum.

Hello ramses

Thanks a lot for your support.
I'm going to wait it out a little longer. I didn't know I still had until next fall.
