Topic: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Hi all,

I’m aware this topic has been covered a bit and I’ve had my own run-in with RME on it, however I’m hoping to get my feature request heard somehow, and this is regarding the phase/polarity functionality in TotalMix.

I have had it explained to me why the phase reverse function in TotalMix does not directly affect the recorded signal, and the whole thing with it being for monitoring purposes only, etc etc, however I do feel at this point it’s time to make an exception for the actual UFX preamps.

The reason is that the UFX preamps have every other feature of regular hardware preamps (48v, gain, the ability for high passing, etc) but it’s beyond frustrating that the phase reverse still does not apply to the recorded signal. RME’s TotalMix philosophy aside, the UFX interfaces make a big deal of the fact that they have four of RME’s excellent preamps (which they are) and as such, one would expect the functionality of pretty much every other hardware preamp, and that would include the ability to phase reverse the recorded signal.

I have the Octamic II as well and lo and behold they’ve bothered to add a phase button to each channel. I’m sorry, the UFX preamps should be no different. It’s well past time for RME to get past their philosophical mental block on this.

As a suggestion, why not add an extra separate phase button next to, or near, the 48v button? Or as per the EQ and Compressor, have a check box that says “record phase state”?

The UFX pre’s have all the other functions of a regular preamp and phase should be included. I hoped that maybe with TotalMix 2.0 it might be addressed, but sadly no.

And before anyone says, “just go buy some phase reverse in-line adapters”, I have, and they’re big and they’re ugly. I should not have to use them.

Anyhow, I hope this little diatribe can warrant some attention from RME and perhaps see if they can change their thinking on this.

Cheers!

Makes no sense to me.
For recording the phase doesn't matter. You can flip the phase in the DAW at every time, after the recording.
The quality of the signal is the same.

For monitoring and PA phase flip feature is useful.

Hardware preamps have this phase inverter button only for tradition, it is from the time before computer.
Today with DAW recording the phase buttons are no longer important. (in Recording)

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Hmm, no actually. Preamps don’t have a phase button because of tradition at all. The majority of decent preamps on the market have phase reverse for a reason, and that’s because the idea of recording is getting the best and preferably accurate signal into the DAW, and this importantly includes phase.

If it was only about tradition, they wouldn’t bother having a low cut filter in the EQ section either as you could just do that in the DAW as well.

Also, if phase matters for live and broadcast applications, then it matters for recording too. My point in challenging RME and their TotalMix philosophy is that TotalMix shouldn’t simply be a vehicle for monitoring purposes, studio or live. It would be great if they took a leaf out of what other companies are doing (Universal Audio, Antelope Audio, Focusrite, whoever really) and incorporated a bit more of that into the TotalMix design, that is to say, a bit more of an angle towards be able to alter the recording signal for those who wish to be able to. They don’t have to change much really.

Besides all of this, the biggest issue here is that the only way to interact with the UFX preamps is via TotalMix - there’s no other way to access the preamps controls other than via the overly complex menu setup on the front panel controls. Thus, regular preamp functions should exist: Phase is a regular preamp function.

Again, gain is provided, 48V is provided, low cut is provided, heck, even a simple compressor is provided! A phase control for the UFX preamps should also be provided. It shouldn’t be a matter for debate. It’s a basic function.

Cheers.

No, the phase plays a role only in conjunction with other signals and one needs to inverse the phase of one track to avoid cancellation.
The signal itself alone has no benefit when phase is flipped.

ChrisBroomhead wrote:

No, Recording and Monitoring is two different pairs of shoes.
Phase correction is part of the live mixing (monitoring) or the mixing work after the recording (DAW-work).

If this would be useful, it would be in Totalmix since long time.

The brands you have listed are for me marketing companies, not comparable to the market leader RME (who invented the stuff).

Again, for monitoring these things are useful, for Recording not needed.

And the basic functions are historic, not important in DAW world.

The UFX is a recording interface, you may add an RME Quadmic, it is a pure analog traditional Preamp with all the features you requested. Unfortunately it is out of production but on the used market it should be possible to find.

After all, you also can use Totalmix Loopback feature to bring phase flip into the recording.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Yes, phase does indeed play a role only in conjunction with other signals but that’s my point. In and of itself, no, a phase-flipped signal doesn’t benefit the signal itself, but we’re generally all working in a multitrack environment so it makes sense that there is going to be phase cancellations, in which case that’s what the phase flip function is for.

Sure, recording and live work are two different pairs of shoes, but again, they share common tools. However, no, phase flip doesn’t have to happen exclusively after the fact in recording. Where I work here studio people work both ways - before and after - and generally most gear (outboard, console, interface) provides for this. Dealing with phase on the way in to a recording is not unusual and is not the exclusive domain of live work.

Yes, the UFX is an interface but it contains four preamps on the front of it, as many interfaces do, and they’re designed to be used for - you guessed it - plugging in microphones. In which case the full suite of functions should be available to it (and phase is surely on of them) as is the case with some of RME’s other products. As I mentioned initially, I do already own the Octamic II and it works excellently, and RME has bothered to put a phase reverse switch on each channel, and it affects both the ADAT outputs and the analog outputs. Who knew?

As for brands, yes, I very much wish to keep using RME products in to the future as I find them generally well thought-out, very well built, have industry-leading drivers available for the interfaces they make, and have excellent customer support. The point of posting here is not to argue with every forum user or berate the company. Far from it. My point is simply that I am looking to raise a feature request with the company (if they’ll listen) that I have long felt is missing and is in need of being attended to. And I’ll continue to make the case for this because I’m more than convinced it’s important.

Besides, if enough people requested changes to the TotalMix graphics and RME bothered to redesign it with a new look (which whilst nice, doesn’t improve the sound or functionality all that much) then surely they can listen to users like me that wish to add what is otherwise a standard recording preamp feature, and one that would make life a little easier for users.

Cheers.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

I think it's good to keep phase out of the recording path.

For me, it's a tool to cross-check your mic positioning before recording, e.g. when miking an amp with two mics.
This helps when setting up the recording and also in a live session to get a good sound.

I think it's better to do any further corrections later in the DAW, where polarity can be flipped at any time without any loss in quality. Besides that, RME states in the manual that this is technically not possible:

UFX III manual, ch. 36 Audio Routing and Processing: "As in normal TotalMix FX use, the options Stereo Width, MS Proc and Phase L/R are NOT within the recording path, but in the monitor path. This is technically determined and can not be changed."

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Sure, cross-checking is fine, but if there’s an issue it’s better to deal with it on the way in, not simply to “fix it in post”. Not much point in cross-checking if you can’t fix it there and then. For those like me who record drumkits, you will know how many phase issues there can be and how important it is to be able to flip the phase on the necessary channels. You don’t get your “good sound” by recording the phase incorrectly.

Why would it be “good to keep phase out of the recording path”? Phase is a physical phenomenon to be fixed. As such, there is no “loss of quality” in flipping the phase. It doesn’t  affect the signal like an EQ setting does.

I don’t care what the RME manual says, I’m sure they are able to add polarity reverse via software in TotalMix. They added other things in the signal path (EQ, compression, etc) so polarity should not be difficult. If they’ve made that physically impossible then that’s a design flaw, simple as that.

To reiterate, phase reverse in a signal path is a normal, standard and widely used function that should be available in some manner on any given preamp. These UFX preamps should be no exception.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

@ChrisBroomhead, implementing what you suggest would require not only change of TotalMix, but IMHO also change of firmware for all RME devices controlled by TM. Beside the risk, that new firmware would not fit into storage or more RAM would be needed than available, it would also require lots of work, testing, risk of introducing bugs and so on...

And now imagine. Some devices would be updated by users and others not updated. The same setting in TM would then work differently...

You have two ways, how to do it. Either using menu on UFX, or using phase reverse in TM together with loopback function in TM.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Yes, you can use the loopback function but that’s very clunky and it feels like a workaround by RME to get around their design limitation. Again, it should be part of the function of the relevant channel.

I’ll have to check whether you can do it via the UFX onboard control panel. Again, it’s a clunky menu system and if phase reverse for the actual signal is indeed present there, then that just confirms the case that phase flip in the signal path is indeed important and should be included on its channel in TotalMix.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

ChrisBroomhead wrote:

What is "incorrectly"? It's only an issue when monitoring or playing back a signal together with others, where you may end up with comb filtering or the like. It simply does not matter how the individual file is recorded to your computer.
If somehow the actual acoustic phenomenon is reversed, then your cables aren't wired correctly. But if you wish to flip polarity because of mic placement matters, then whether the file gets recorded one way or another just doesn't matter. It's a simple switch of a button in Totalmix or in your DAW, depending on where you monitor. In some cases, you might also want to try applying a touch of delay in the DAW to a channel rather than just flip it. There is no compelling need for the physical file on your disk drive to be recorded with a specific polarity.

Since you have an Octamic, you could also reserve that for tracks where you might want to flip polarity, and keep the preamps in the UFX for signals where it's not likely needed (overheads perhaps).

If there were a physical polarity switch for the UFX preamp, it would be controllable from Totalmix as well.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Good. Someone from RME to talk to.

That is all incorrect. Yes, it absolutely matters how an individual file is recorded to the computer. To say there is no compelling reason for the physical file to be recorded with the polarity reversed is no different to saying there’s no compelling reason for the physical file being recorded having the low cut filter enabled to cut out sub frequencies or to use the EQ to cut out some nasty frequencies in a room, etc. The idea of recording is to get as good and phase-coherent sound into the DAW as possible. To say anything else is ignorance of the recording process.

As an example, recording a top and bottom mic on the snare drum I always have to flip the phase of the bottom mic otherwise when you play it back the phase cancellation sounds terrible. The idea that every time you record something in your DAW you should go and phase flip it via a plugin is stupidity. The whole reason why preamps have a phase reverse function is to enable that scenario to be corrected DURING the recording process. Phase issues recording 10 mics on a drumkit have nothing to do with cables not being “wired correctly” (in my case anyhow) but rather with natural acoustic phenomena. As such the hardware should be able to compensate for this, like every other hardware preamp.

And no, I shouldn’t have to swap preamps simply because one of the UFX channels doesn’t have phase reverse.

Correct, if there was a physical polarity switch for the UFX preamp it would also be controllable in TM, but there’s not and it isn’t. Thus back to my original point, it is beyond time to add a reverse polarity function into the UFX channels in TotalMix that affects the recording path, not simply for monitoring. The UFX has four excellent preamps and they should have the full functionality of the other hardware preamps I also own, such as the API 3124V and the Neve 5211. Those two particular models all have polarity switches on them. If it’s good enough for Neve and API, it’s good enough for RME.

I will continue to beat this drum and make my point until someone at RME hears me out.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

No worries. That's OK. Always happy to debate anyhow.

I'm just here to plead my case to RME for a function I strongly believe needs to be added to TotalMix (and/or the interface firmware) and which should have been included from the get-go.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

No, it really doesn't matter. And polarity isn't comparable to a filter. It appears that Logic requires some kind of "Gain plugin", most DAWs should have a simple polarity switch in each channel. Doesn't take that much longer to activate that while monitoring.

It's also perfectly feasible to connect the microphones that are likely to require a flip to a preamp that has a switch if you prefer that. Dedicated RME preamps like the Octamic and 12Mic do have that.

Mind that the UFX is a complete audio interface with 4 more or less auxiliary preamps. Recording a drum set will require additional preamps anyway.
The technical reasons for this implementation were already quoted above.

Daniel Fuchs

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

No, it really does matter. Yes, Logic does have a gain plugin where you can flip the filter but to reiterate, this is NOT for monitoring purposes, it is for tracking purposes. As such, recording phase correctly is part of recording a multi mic set up correctly. This is standard studio recording practice. You should know that. I’m not interested in monitoring correct phase, I’m interested in recording correct phase.

Seeings as I have to explain an example scenario: Yes, I can insert a phase flip plugin in Logic however it doesn’t affect the audio file - only what’s being monitored. Quite often after recording I simply need to export the drum files and often that’s done without processing - it’s just exporting the recorded files. Thus, if the phase hasn’t been recorded correctly I have to go through the relevant tracks and process them prior to exporting - a preferably avoidable step.

So yes, polarity is in fact comparable to a filter. Recording a complete and satisfactory multi mic sound includes recording the phase correctly.

I’m aware recording a drumkit requires multiple preamps. I’ve been doing it for years. In addition to the UFX I have the Octamic II as well as some API and Neve preamps.

If you believe polarity inversion is unnecessary, why did RME bother to include it and which acts within the signal path on the Octamic II? Why not do away with it across the product line in order to align with this philosophy? I will hazard a guess that in the case of the UFX not including polarity is an oversight. If there’s technical reasons for it not to be possible (which I’m not convinced is actually the case), then that’s a design flaw.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

As a sound engineer with decades of experience, I would argue that it makes total sense to record the polarity of a signal in right way from the beginning. Right being the polarity that is wanted or needed for a certain application! This leaves less margin for error, speeds up the workflow and avoids additional documentation. There are many situations beyond recording drums when this is appropriate.

For a company like RME, with its high standards and claims for professionalism it would be suitable to offer this option in the preamp section of TM.

I find it bizarre that admins on this forum are constantly defending RME products against user's feature requests instead of honoring the input. Please think about that.

Wrong wrong wrong

You always want to go thru the recorded tracks for phase correction.
Spending time on that before the recording is done is just waste of time.

In the extreme rare case that you want to flip the phase for the recording you can use Loopback.
Two clicks, open the channel and hit the Loopback button.

For recording drums, how do you find out if one mic should be phase flipped ?
Do you let play the drummer for a time to investigate the phasing ?
Double waste of time ?

And by the way, this is a user forum.

For talking soley with RME team members one can contact the company directly.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Absolute rubbish, mate. Getting phase correct for recording is not a waste of time and is standard practice in the studio environment.

Checking for phase issues whilst the drummer plays is no different than setting the correct gain level for each channel and inserting any useful corrective EQ into the path. Prior to that you also need to spend time tuning the drums and ensuring good mic placement. Unless you think that’s all a waste of time as well. As such, phase is a part of that whole process. Yes, you can do it afterwards but it’s more desirable to do it when tracking.

Also, would that the loopback function was that simple, but it’s not.

For heaven’s sake, phase checking is already possible in TotalMix for monitoring. If phase wasn’t important that function wouldn’t be there. As it stands it is there and all I’m asking is for the ability for that to be embedded into the signal path. Simple and as logical as that.

As for contacting the RME team directly, I haven’t really found any easy way to do that other than to talk to local support people here, but they’re not RME employees, they’re just contracted support people.

The point of posting here is to see if there’s any other interest from others in what I’m requesting and also hopefully to get someone from RME directly to respond. Happy to have a conversation with them and press my point with them.

Yes in studios with recording tape machines.

It is a big difference. The gain is essential for a good recording, not clipping but good level.
EQ is something I would not use in the recording path, but thats my own philosophy.

Yes this is important for getting a good recording, it can not be corrected in the DAW afterwards.

I have to admit it is a bit more than only two clicks. You have to route the mic input to an output, then activate Loopback. Select the corresponding input channel in the DAW for recording.
But still very quick to do.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

No, phase reversal is not exclusively for tape machines. Without wishing to sound like a douche, I’ve worked in a number of studios here in Nashville, all of which were using a console straight into Pro Tools, and all of which were using the phase functions on the console. No tape machines in sight.

What has your statement “monitoring and recording are two different things” got to do with anything? Why check for phase errors in the monitoring if you can’t subsequently correct them during the recording?

With point about EQ, this is part of my point: you’re saying that you wouldn’t record with EQ as that’s your particular philosophy. OK. I record with EQ. I’m not having a go at you for not recording with EQ. You should have the option to record without it, and I should have the option to record with it. The same should apply for phase. If you, or anyone else for that matter, don’t wish to have the signal phase-flipped, you shouldn’t have to. I wish to have the ability to have the signal phase-flipped, in this case via a simple software switch as part of the UFX mic channel in TotalMix.

That’s it. That’s all I’m asking. I didn’t expect this post to turn into such an argumentative back-and-forth, however I’ve been surprised at what’s come at me for a simple feature request. I was hoping there would perhaps be others who might be interested in seeing this feature added to TotalMix also.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Yes, that was very wise to edit what you initially posted there. Modern recording does indeed happen in more places than just bedrooms.

The point about older consoles and tape machines is irrelevant. New rack preamps still come with phase reversal, including RME’s own Octamic II.

At this point there’s not much point me responding to these responses. I’ll wait for someone else who might have a broader view of things.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

And what exactly do you want? Just to be able to flip phase of physical inputs for recording in DAW? Or to be able to flip phase of physical inputs to be used in DAW and submixes?

The former could possibly be done in the interface driver, I guess. The latter is way more difficult if possible at all. That would require change in firmware.

Either way, adding the feature that you desire, is not that simple as it seems. Most, if not all signal processing is performed by HW in interfaces, not by SW (TM/driver) in computer.

Kindly don't make assumptions or put words into my mouth, I never said it's generally unnecessary.

The way the UFX is designed, you are relatively unlikely to face a setup where you will only be using the inbuilt preamps and require the polarity switch - and if, it's there as explained.

You don't need to "swap" anything, you can simply plan ahead when setting up and use preamps with a physical switch for the likely limited number of channels that might require it. Why would you insist on connecting these channels to the UFX when you have several alternatives?
If absolutely required, the Loopback option is a good workaround.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Not putting your words in your mouth, just quoting what you said above, and that was "No, it really doesn't matter." Which I take to mean this whole issue of polarity inversion is not important, or at least asking for TotalMix to have the ability to flip polarity in the recording signal is not relevant. so yes, it does matter.

The issue of having alternative preamps to use and whether someone is only using the inbuilt preamps is completely missing the point of this whole issue. If someone was only using the UFX pre's because that's all they had or even needed, then my point becomes even more relevant.

The point is, and my request/suggestion is, that the UFX pre's should have the full set of what are generally standard controls available to them, in this case via TotalMix, and that includes phase inversion within the signal path. This should be alongside the existing 48V, Instrument, Gain controls. Ideally there should be a pad, but I won't push my luck.

No, I understand nothing's easy to just 'drop in' to TotalMix, but I feel it's important, and if RME went to the effort of adding coloured channels and a new vector-based GUI into TotalMix 2.0, why not add the preamp controls that have been missing from the get-go? I think it's a great thing that RME listened to users and added those graphical features, but adding things that directly affect the functionality in recording should also be considered, if not prioritised.

As you say, the Loopback function is a "good workaround", and that's the key phrase. You only need a workaround when there's something missing or a design flaw, etc. At this point RME should just admit there's a design issue or at the very least a design omission. That would be good start. Unless they believe their designs never have issues and never need improving. Something I doubt.

Anyway, my whole point in this entire post was to see if there was any other support for my request, and to potentially see if someone higher up at the company might take notice and engage in the conversation with a user like me. Ultimately I'm trying to help them improve their product too. If none of this is of interest to anyone, that's fine. Perhaps I'll try a different channel of communication and see if I get any response. What's the point of the forum if user requests just get shut down by the community?

Cheers.

The user forum is for sharing requests, opinions and knowledge. It's not a one-way street for you towards RME where nobody else is allowed to chime in. If you make a request on a public forum, you have to expect that fellow forum members may have different opinions.

If you do not want to discuss this issue with other forum members, then an alternative would be to send an e-mail to RME Support, where it can be discussed directly with RME.

I gave you my point of view on this topic, nothing more and nothing less. The same applies to the other forum members. One fellow forum member suggested Loopback as a possible workaround, and RME Support suggested the same approach.

Maybe it sounded to you as if the community wanted to shut the topic down. But that was not the intention.

If you read the manual passage I quoted, it states quite explicitly:

"As in normal TotalMix FX use, the options Stereo Width, MS Proc and Phase L/R are NOT within the recording path, but in the monitor path. This is technically determined and can not be changed."

RME Support referred to this same passage when stating:

"The technical reasons for this implementation were already quoted above."

This is why the technical limitation was pointed out and Loopback was discussed as an alternative approach. Additionally, I explained how I am handling this for my own use cases.

As always, RME regularly reads the forum posts, and if there is something they can do, they will respond regardless of what the RME user community is saying.

I wish you good luck with your feature request. If RME decides to implement it, I would expect it to be configurable, similar to other TotalMix FX options, so that users can choose whether its in the recording path or not. With the option disabled by default, this would not change anything for users who don't need or don't want it.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

That's fine. That's the closest anyone's come so far to admitting that there are design limitations and/or omissions. From here RME should attempt to correct these limitations. Adding support for phase reversal in the signal chain chief among them.

Without knowing the technical ins-and-outs personally I would have thought there is a software path to getting polarity reversal into the signal chain. It's already present for monitoring purposes so why wouldn't that be possible to place in the direct signal path? Unless the UFX is so underpowered in its DSP that that can't be done. But I doubt that.

Also, flipping the phase in a DAW is done on the software level, not the hardware level. Yes, it ultimately affects the audio file on the hard disc but it alters it via software. Thus I would have thought there is a way to apply the same principle in TotalMix. If not, that's a design flaw. They have added the EQ section into the signal path so why not phase?

Anyhow, I'm open to other peoples views and I'm a RME user like everyone else. However I haven't drunk the cool-aid so I'm not here to just defend the company no matter what, regardless of product issues.

Besides, like I said RME support here is not actually RME the company: it's a local organisation who are contracted to provide support on behalf of RME in the States. I've spoken to them previously I might add. Ultimately, they have no say in anything regarding product improvement.

But again, clearly no-one else has an issue with TotalMix polarity control nor particularly cares, and that's OK. It is what is it.

I'm not speaking for RME. I'm a customer just like you. I only quoted what the manual says, nothing more.

RME will speak for themselves. I neither said nor implied that this was an "admission" of any design limitation or omission. That's your interpretation, not something I said or intended to imply. Please don't attribute that interpretation to me.

I would simply call it "working as designed and documented".

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Fine. No worries.

I'll try and chat to someone at RME directly and see if I get anywhere with them.

And yes, what you said about how RME would implement such a request is correct: Like the EQ and compression features, it would be configurable in the way you described. That's all I'm asking for.

ChrisBroomhead wrote:

Not putting your words in your mouth, just quoting what you said above, and that was "No, it really doesn't matter." Which I take to mean this whole issue of polarity inversion is not important, or at least asking for TotalMix to have the ability to flip polarity in the recording signal is not relevant. so yes, it does matter.

I said the physical polarity of the individual recorded file does not matter, and I stand by that. Obviously, phase reversal should be applied where needed, like when recording a snare from both sides. But there is no actual technical advantage to applying that at the hardware level. Doing so in the DAW channel is just as good, as issues can only occur when the signal is mixed with others. Any effect or whatever applied within the channel simply does not care about absolute polarity...

Nothing is "shut down", but everyone's as free to disagree with you as you are to state your opinion here. Please accept that.

I won't be repeating the more general points I've made earlier, which you tend to ignore. Feel free to reread my previous comment.

The technical details have also been quoted repeatedly.
In principle, Totalmix is simply not part of the recording signal path. Applications record directly from the physical input. That's always been this way since forever.
And while at some point it was made possible to insert EQ and dynamics into the recorded signal, the quote from the manual clearly states that this does not apply to other functions and can't be changed. If that were an option, it wouldn't be stated otherwise in the manual.

That said, I'm not some "local organisation", and I'm not in the US. I'm the official RME support, and I've been doing that for a little while, but I'm not a hardware or software developer. The US Support is run by the official US distributor, Synthax, also not what I'd refer to as "contracted".

If you would like to have a constructive discussion, please try to be a bit more constructive as well.

You already are, and your comments are being seen and if someone could simply change that with three lines of code, you'd have heard about it...

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Yes, I read the quote from the manual previously. I'd be curious to know what is meant by "This is technically determined and can not be changed". It would seem strange if the UFX is hardwired in such a way as changes to things like polarity cannot be done. That would seem strange, especially considering polarity reversal is already present in the monitoring section. But hey, I'm not an engineer.

So if what I'm requesting can't be done, won't be done, will never be done, OK, fine, say that. But don't say, as has been the insistence of most people here, and those at RME who I have interacted with, that "you shouldn't need to change the phase", "who records with the phase flipped", "you generally always do that in the DAW", and "phase reverse on legacy consoles were only for tape machines", etc.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

After 34 posts I come to the conclusion that this is just fighting against Germany.
Chris, are you the star in the saloon when you tell the crowd you are fighting against a German company and you will bring them down to the knees ?
The general hate against evil Germans ? Is that the motivation ?

I don't see any issue with audio interface at all. Your UFX works fine as it should.
You ignore all inputs in the discussion, you blame Synthax for being not supportive, you twist arguments of others to make it useful for your rant. (I never mentioned recording in bedrooms)

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

That's genuinely a funny response! I like it.

As it stands I'm not American but Australian (I just happen to be living and working in the US currently), so the "star in the saloon" reference doesn't really apply. But it is funny.

I didn't blame Synthax at all. They've been good and somewhat supportive of what I'm saying. I spoke to them earlier today in fact.

Not sure that I'm fighting against Germany. I'm fighting against RME a little bit because they can be quite stubborn on some things, this issue being one of them.

I'm digging my heels in here because I know that my point stands. I can guarantee you 100% that any studio person you ask here will say yes, phase correction on the input stage is standard practice and is desirable. No question there. RME should indeed provide for this on their software-controlled preamps.

Like I said, if it's technically impossible to do (which I kinda doubt) then fine, it can't be done, in which case that's a design omission.

If on the other hand the insistence from the company is that you shouldn't need to do this (phase reverse) then I will continue to call them out on that erroneous viewpoint and continue to push the case for rectifying this in TotalMix. If no-one else wants to support me, I'm fine with that.

Nobody said so. Not sure why you would insist on misrepresenting what I did say but I don't really want to repeat it.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

That’s OK. We don’t need to keep going over it.

The reason why I made the point about the company’s insistence is that when I had this discussion a few years back the response I got from RME was “there should be no need to reverse the polarity when recording”. It was explained to me back then that you shouldn’t need to do this and that’s the idea behind not providing it in TotalMix. That’s what they told me directly. So no misrepresenting going on. If RME want to change their response now to “it’s not technically possible”, then they should do so. In which case, as a user, I’m telling them that that is an oversight.

If it’s technically possible, I’m requesting it to be at least considered in a future TM release. I have a very strong case as to why it should be included (all of what has been said above).

If it’s not technically possible, they should say so and stop telling me that I shouldn’t want to do it.

That’s all.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

In the meantime, you might as well get one of these (several companies make them too)

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Yes, I have several of those already.

They work, but boy is it an ugly sight, especially as the inputs for the UFX pre’s are on the front of the unit!

Would it fit on the mic side?
I suppose you could also wire a special XLR cable. Anyway, either could be the patch of least resistance.(yes, that was a typo but it made me chuckle so I’m leaving it!)

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Haha, yes, it's a good pun!

Yeah, sometimes it will fit on the mic side. Unfortunately the one currently that needs to be flipped already has a pad on it and that's already on the mic side.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Well, you have Octamix II, so you have 8 inputs with phase flip. And few more in other mic pres, that you use. So, you do not have real problem to be solved, you may flip handfull of inputs. The whole discussion is rather academic.

In the very rare case, you would need phase flip, you may use loopback. To make it easy on click operation, you may prepare snapshot with routings needed, beforehand...

And you have not answered my question (#25)...

Connect both to the mic one after the other, it doesn't matter which one first.

Or plug it to Octamic II that has phase invert button.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

No, I can't connect the mic after the other because it doesn't fit in the space. Not sure whether you've used in-line adapters (such as the Whirlwinds) but they're very long. You can't always just connect two together and hang it off a microphone.

I'm already using the Octamic II however the UFX preamp and the UFX converter are better than what's in the Octamic II

No, I haven't answered your question from #25 because the phrasing is convoluted and the question is unclear.

No, the whole discussion is not academic and saying "the rare case you would need to flip phase" makes me think you haven't done a lot of drumkit or multi-mic recording. Phase correction will always be necessary somewhere in such mic setups. As such, it's much better to do it on the way in to the DAW rather than after, or to at least have the ability to do so.

My point is simply this: I am requesting a feature in TotalMix that would make life a little simpler for multi-mic RME users like me, and a feature that would bring the UFX preamp section more in line with other fully-featured hardware preamps, and that is to have a dedicated phase reverse button on each channel that actually affect the signal output, not simply the monitoring. That's all.

If those here think that's a silly or unnecessary request, that's OK; I'm fine with that.

To all those who requested the updated channel colour feature that made their way into TotalMix 2.0, I'm glad your voices were heard. It's not something I would have worried too much about but then I wouldn't have bothered berating everyone who wanted it.

Freedom of speech, y'all!

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

You were told many times, that signal path does not go via TM. So requesting that feature in TM makes no sense.

And it is not clear, if you are requesting that the phase reverse works exactly as if it is made on analog input to interface (say UFX), or if you just want the signal may be flipped when recorded on computer.

And, if you prefer UFX for drums that need phase inversion, you may use the loopback. Just one note, if you record some drums using UFX and other using Octamix II, the signals will not be time alligned (AD in UFX is 31 samples faster and few more samples may be lost on the ADAT route...) and you should correct it in the DAW. And if that is needed, flipping also polarity in the DAW does not seem to be that big deal ....

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

No it’s not. That’s is all adding unnecessary steps. And for what? So RME doesn’t have to bother adding phase correction. Having to use workarounds like the loopback function just to reverse the polarity is a design flaw, or at least an omission. In fact ALL these workarounds I keep having recommended to me are all to compensate for the fact that the UFX mic pre’s don’t have a polarity flip function. Simple as that.

Re: TotalMix/UFX Pre’s Phase Feature Request

Recording using different A/Ds for a group of microphones that need to be time alligned also adds unnecesary steps. An even more dangerous as few tens of samples difference may be much less obvious than reverted phase. And more signals must be moved and precise calculations have to be performed and so on....

And you still have not replied what exactly you need from those two possibilities. I keep asking because, one is IMHO doable and RME might implement it one day, if they decide so, the other is IMHO very unlikely to happen.

You are right, that it may be handy to flip phase at recording stage. Even more handy would be to record all drums by single one A/D converter to avoid need to repair it in the DAW. Or one should apply precise delays to compensate for time shifts created by differences in time needed for AD.

Those tiny time shifts are more dangerous than phase reverse which is obvious....
