Topic: "Unable to open audio playback device.

Hello,

I talked to Jeff about this and he seems to think this is an issue with Cakewalk Sonar so I posted this on the Sonar forums. I am posting it here in hopes that someone here using Sonar and Win7 64bit and a Multiface II PCI-e might shed some light on this.

"Unable to open audio playback device. Device may not support the current project's audio format or may be in use."

1. I open Sonar and I can play a project fine. Close Sonar.
2. Play a wav or mp3 on Windows Media Player fine. Close Windows Media Player.
3. Open Sonar and push play and the above message appears. Close Sonar.
4. Open Sonar again and the project plays fine.

Anyone know why this happens? Kinda of a pain in the ass.

I am using the ASIO driver for my RME Multiface II PCI-e card.
Win7 64 and Sonar 8.5 64 bit.

Global Options /Audio Data /File bit depths are
Record 24
Render 64
Import Original

Options /Audio Options /Sampling Rate is 96000

Thanks!

Re: "Unable to open audio playback device.

Is the HDSP default device in Windows? Are system sounds on? Can you set onboard sound as default, if available?

Re: "Unable to open audio playback device.

Hi Daniel,

Yes, HDSP is the default device in Windows.

System sounds are off.

I can not set onboard sound as default, because it's not available.

In Windows 7,

In Sound/Playback tab, every setting is for RME Hammerfall DSP, including the first one, Speakers which is the Default Device.

In Sound/Sounds tab, the Sound Scheme is set to No Sounds.

In Sound/Recording tab, there are 3 High Definition Audio Device, two of which are marked Currently Unavailabe. The rest are RME.

Re: "Unable to open audio playback device.

Hi,

why is the onboard sound unavailable?
