Topic: RME Babyface questions

Hello,

I want to replace REM DIGI 96/8 PAD with RME baby face in some usage cases. So I need to be sure that some functionalities are same as they on both audio cards.

Is RME babyface bit-exact on spdif in/out?
RME DIGI has auto-detection of SPDIF clock on input and it switching automatically to new samplerate when it is changed, without dropouts. Does this function exists on RME babyface?

1: yes.

2: The Digi cards (any hardware) will cause a reset of the used software or other side effects when changing the sample rate via external sync. Otherwise the playback speed/pitch would not be correct. So I am not sure what you mean exactly.

Driver doesn't reset used software when Safe mode->Check input is not set in "RME DIGI settings". Or reset is not visible for user. For me adobe audition record audio even if sample rate is different from one on SPDIF input, with those settings. Is this functionality available with RME babyface?

So I can use RME baby face for delivering compressed audio streams on 192 kHz Fs through optical spdif?

I think you misunderstand. You are using WDM, and Windows is doing real-time sample rate conversion for you. This is not a feature of our driver. Please also note that when changing the sample rate range (single/double/quad) there IS a reset. That said the functionality of the Babyface is similar.

Regarding your last question - sure, the BF does not know what you play back, and really doesn't care within 24 bits...

I am sure that Windows was not doing sample rate conversion, I am working on sample level of played/recorded data, sample rate conversion would change those samples. Also speed of sample delivery was changed when spdif input singnal changes sample rate. I was not using windows generic WAVE MAPPER device but I was accessing directly to DIGI device.

One more questions what are limitations of simultaneous playback/recording from PC in regard to USB bandwidth? Can we play and record 192 kHz stereo on spdif input/output over USB (controlled by PC, no internal loopback)?
