Topic: phantom power ufx line inputs question

this might be a stupid question but i want to be safe than sorry.

is it safe to run unbalanced synths that's going into active DI to make it balanced (the DI being phantom powered through phantom power supply plugged into wall) with XLR output into the TRS line inputs of RME UFX.. or does Phantom power goes both ways?

Re: phantom power ufx line inputs question

You mean you connected the TRS to the XLR outputs of the phantom power device? Phantom power present there or not depends on the phantom power device. Check that device's manual or measure it to be sure. IF there is phantom power it is indeed critical for the line inputs when used for more than a few minutes.

Re: phantom power ufx line inputs question

i haven't done this yet btw.

synths stereo TS unbalanced outputs > into stereo active DI TS input>
stereo phantom power supply (plugged in wall) to power the active DI>
now balanced stereo DI XLR outputs> using cables one side XLR, other TRS into line inputs of RME on back

does that make sense? is this safe?

the phantom PS https://www.radialeng.com/product/sb-48
phantom PS manual/guide https://www.radialeng.com/wp-content/up … manual.pdf

the active DI to run the synths https://rupertneve.com/products/rndi/
the active DI manual/guide https://rupertneve.com/static/media/202 … revA10.pdf

im not sure if PREAMP requirement is a must, to go from DI to PRe, cause having lots of preamps get expensive. Im guessing the synths signal is hot enough already to go directly in line channel (i think i can go in line direct if im not mistaking?)

Re: phantom power ufx line inputs question

The Radial manual mentions that DC is blocked at the XLR male outputs, so no problem.

The Neve manual states a loss of 10 dB in level. You will have to try if the UFX line inputs are sensitive enough.

thank you so much for taking the time to check and clarification. i dont know the technicalities so now i know how i can proceed. many thanks again.
