Topic: 600 Ohm headphones on ADI-2 Pro FS?

Does anyone know how well the ADI-2 Pro FS (DA/AD Converter) is able to power 600 ohm headphones?

I'm interested in testing out the Beyerdynamic DT880 600 Ohm headphones, which according to Z-Reviews beats all the expensive headphones in his collection...yet it costs just £180.

He says the problem is driving them and the Emotiva BasX A100 was one of only two headphone/speaker amps that could power them, and then only after he modded the amp to work in 'direct drive mode' i.e. passing the speaker amp through the phones out socket.

This gave him 0.6 watts per channel @600 Ohms, compared to 350mW per Channel @600 Ohms in normal mode.  So I guess my question is can the ADI-2 Pro FS reach outputs anything like this?

Re: 600 Ohm headphones on ADI-2 Pro FS?

At 600 Ohms the ADI-2 Pro (and DAC) provides 158 mW in normal mode, and that already is enough to drive the DT880 into full distortion - not to mention what it will do to your hearing...

If you think this isn't enough use the Pro in balanced mode to get 631 mW. Note that we are not responsible for destroyed headphones or ears...

Iam using DT880 600ohm hphones.

How do I soften the 6k peak on these phones?
Is there any recommended equaliser setting .

Iam using adi 2 dac fs

According to my measurement and experience, with my specific specimen of the DT 880, the peak is a bit higher, EQ: f: 7.5kHz, G:-6dB, Q:~ 1,6  - the exact amount of Q depends if you only want to catch the peak or tame the little hot treble in general.
Your ear is the judge.

Of course this can vary a bit, but usually the production is quite consistent at Beyerdynamics.
This peak is part of their house sound and can be found on most Beyerdynamic models.

You can try this for EQ:

This site has suggested EQ settings for a large number of headphones. I used the EQ that was suggested for the DT 1990, and it really helped reduce the treble emphasis.

Re: 600 Ohm headphones on ADI-2 Pro FS?

Thank you all
Could you post your settings?
Finding the link to those settings a little confusing.  Iam new to all this. Some of the posted settings don’t exist on adi 2 dac ie some band settings not available.

Could you post what your equaliser graph looks like?
Maybe a snapshot.

Thanks#

UPDATE

These presets are pointless.

they are just a ruff guide.

you cannot copy these settings into the adi dac.
they dont make any sense.

band 3 and 4  maybe another  hrm cannot match these settings.
you just end up with a crap sounding messy equalizer bar.

thanks all anyway

Re: 600 Ohm headphones on ADI-2 Pro FS?

There are 2 basic versions of Beyerdynamic DT880 (and some variations):
Do you have felt, or foam with fiber flocking on top of the driver?

The felt version has a quite different response.

Re: 600 Ohm headphones on ADI-2 Pro FS?

Ok. I have checked
It’s definitely not foam. Feels more like velvet! Very smooth velvet.

Re: 600 Ohm headphones on ADI-2 Pro FS?

This is the flocking on top of a foam disc.

You have one of the later variants.
There are some with slightly different frequency response.
The difference usually is, how broad and high the high frequency peak is, and what happens above.

The one measured in Reddit is more like an outlier.
The typical Beyerdynamic high frequency peak is centered around 7.5 to 8 kHz.

Try a -6dB anti-peak with Q: 1.6 and tune it up and down until it sounds best.
Then play with Q and level to optimize the result.

Kais Thanks

Ok will try thanks again

Re: 600 Ohm headphones on ADI-2 Pro FS?

Would the DAC power the 600 Ohm better than the Asgard 3?

Of course.

ADI-2 powers everything better than anything else!
Joke aside, yes, ADI-2 is a highclass device in every aspect and hard to beat.
