Topic: FF 800 + 2019 Macbook Pro (Catalina 10.15.6)

Hi all,

I'm using a Fireface 800 through my Macbook Pro's USB-C port, using a USB-C to Thunderbolt and then a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter. This configuration has been working fine.

Lately I've been getting some random extremely loud pops (worrying about the speakers to be honest). Sometimes the Fireface still works after a pop, sometimes I'm getting a low rumbling noise and I have to turn it off and on again to get rid of it.

The pops are getting more frequent.

In addition, the first channel (the one with the instrument input) always shows some noise as input, even with nothing plugs in.

While writing this, I checked the situation again, and now when I turn on the FF800 I get persistent repeating clicks on all outputs.

Is this the famous PSU / capacitor issue? And if so, does that also explain the previous loud pops + input 1 issues?

Thanks.

Hi!

It can be the PSU or capacitors etc yes!
How old is your FF 800?

It’s old, I got it second hand. Is there a way to find out the age from the hardware/firmware?

Hi dkhgh,

Would you be able to share what brand of adapters you bought to have your FF 800 work with your 2019 MBP?

Rather than purchase a new interface, I'd like my FF800 to work with my 2020 iMac, transitioning it from my older Mac mini, which had the FF800 port.

Thank you in advance!

Firewire to thunderbolt
Thunderbolt to usb-c

Both from apple.

Just to update you the adapters did the trick. The FF800 works smoothly on my iMac now.

Hello- I have been attempting the same MBP setup with no luck. What version of drivers did you use? Flash version?

Thank you!
