Topic: Dust specks between acrylic front panel and OLED: QA/QC issues?

Hi guys,

Just received my Pro FS R BE yesterday. Functionally, so far so good (used just the main outs - so far).

Noticed a (larger) speck of dust (any many smaller ones) between the plastic screen and the OLED.
Is there any easy way (without opening the device) to dislodge it ?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Dust specks between acrylic front panel and OLED: QA/QC issues?

No way, and even opening doesn't help as it is covered inside. If that dust is too disturbing exchange the unit. But first check that the factory did not forget to remove the protective cover film from the acryllic front, which makes everything blurry and looks dirty as well.

Re: Dust specks between acrylic front panel and OLED: QA/QC issues?

Thanks for the information, Matthias.

Re: Dust specks between acrylic front panel and OLED: QA/QC issues?

I just looked at mine and there is A LOT of dust under the plastic on mine. I didn't notice it when I first got it a few weeks ago and I'm usually pretty sensitive to that kind of thing so it must have somehow gotten in since I got it.

Re: Dust specks between acrylic front panel and OLED: QA/QC issues?

So it depends on the room - if there is plenty of dust in your room, all electric units will get the dust.
Try to remove dust in the room.

Can you make a pic of the display?

I tried but the screen is too shiny to really see anything. Also it is impossible to tell in a photo whether the dust in inside the screen or just on it. Really the only way I can tell that the dust is inside the screen is that it doesn't move when I attempt to wipe it off.

EDIT: I was able to get a photo of the largest piece. There are many more but this one is the most obvious. You can see it on the volume bar. https://i.imgur.com/BaGyS1A.jpg

Maybe it is something like rest of EDDING and can be removed with ethanol

For me, it does not look like dust - maybe a tiny peace of black plastik

Does not look like a pixel error

Yeah it's actually blue not black. Could be a piece of plastic. I don't think anything will be able to clean it off since it's under the plastic.

I don't think that the dust entered the cavity (LCD / acrylic) upon the delivery of the product.

From what I understood, the edges of the LCD are pressed against the frame behind the acrylic, preventing unwanted air movement.

I'm assuming that if there would've been any opening we could've used some compressed air (indirectly) to try to dislodge that dust but since it's not a possibility then... nothing can be done - not without opening it up and by voiding your warranty on a brand new product..

In my case, a replacement has been accepted.

Re: Dust specks between acrylic front panel and OLED: QA/QC issues?

I've received the replacement unit and there's still some dust present under the LCD cover.

The acrylic is properly scuffed. (screenshots taken from a video that I recorded during the unboxing of the ADI)

As MC stated above, the ADI-2 are delivered by default without the protective film on the LCD cover.

None of the units I have received had protective film applied on the cover.

Re: Dust specks between acrylic front panel and OLED: QA/QC issues?

If for me, I'd prefer the protective film to be placed on the product when unboxing. That way I would feel certain that if any scratches, those would be on the film and not on the actual display.

But, are you really really sure that there is no protective film, sometimes it is so neatly and perfect placed, that you do not even see it until a corner or so comes loose. Need to note, my experience comes from other products though and not (yet) from RME.

But with above scratches in the display itself, I’d find it unacceptable.

The retailer was super responsive and I really appreciate their help. Easily a 10 out of 10 for the service and handling. The delivered products were sealed as they were delivered to them by the distributor (not sure if they can re-package previously used products, returns etc). The retailer forwarded the video I've recorded to the distributor and we're waiting for their reply.

I really like this device, it's a technical masterpiece. I've wanted one since the first iteration came out a few years ago - the reason I've asked for the 2nd replacement in the first place (instead of just asking the refund and moving on).

I've not completely lost faith in RME's QA/QC, hopefully someone will be able to escalate this.

Re: Dust specks between acrylic front panel and OLED: QA/QC issues?

I too received a replacement for mine and my replacement was even worse than the first one. The dealer then checked a third one in their warehouse and it too was defective. I ended up returning mine for a refund. It's unfortunate since it's such a nice unit otherwise but for such a high price I expect it to be perfect out of the box. I don't know if it's just a bad batch or if this is a common error.

Re: Dust specks between acrylic front panel and OLED: QA/QC issues?

People buying this dac should ask retailer to check the condition.
Not sure if that would be possible.
The dac is a sure winner in my book.
But.........
I purchased mine back in July  started to show problems after a few weeks.
Windows updates messed up my driver.
Remote is failing, sometimes light doesn’t flash,   Numbers on remote buttons starting to fade after little use.
I don’t think there’s more than 15 hrs use on mine.
Boxed it up until there’s updated drivers to fix random win 10 blue screen shut downs.

Yeah in a way I feel like I may have dodged a bullet. The ADI-2 seems to have a decent number of issues but due to the extreme audio quality and unique features people tend to look past them.

The remote isn't that great, indeed. Strange decision (to use a cheaper remote) since quite a few users have already reported faults with the "main" rotary encoder. But I was okay with the idea of buying a backup remote in the future.

The drivers, from what I've seen, they're robust. That plus a several-year driver / firmware upgrade support are essential – especially when making such an investment.

But the questionable assembly of the front panel (with all the contaminants sandwiched between the OLED and the acrylic) and scratches aren’t what I expect to receive when I buy an RME product.

Re: Dust specks between acrylic front panel and OLED: QA/QC issues?

Just my 2 cents: I have the new remote for about a year, and the buttons don't fade at all (and I use it every day). smile
Among professionnal people, RME is well know for their rock solid drivers... You can check that anywhere on the web, pro users said that. And not about 2 channels DSD on an exotic audiophile software player, but on professionnal machine with 16+ channels, I mean real pro usage.

I haven't checked my screen with a magnifying glass, electronic microscope or a special light, but no scratches or big dust that I can consider as a problem on mine... And BTW, on any polish glass surface, you can reveal micro scratches with the appropriate lighting: this work even on my brand new Leica M lenses...

Just want to put things in perspective, when I read this post, it's like RME quality is crap, and really it's not the feeling I get despite of 2 years of reading this forum and 2 years of using their product on a daily base.

Sure, some issues happen (like on every product!), mine have the defective volume pot for instance. But it has been replaced for free and now works like a charm. And besides that, for me the quality of RME is really top notch: drivers, manuals, lockable power cable, features on a so small package... And the way I've seen the firmware constantly improved based on the feedback of the users: unique and precious, really...

The chassis is of better quality than those of much more expensive hi-fi devices I have encounter, that you won't screw twice because the screw thread is dead after one unscrewing... And for me it's really more relevant than some micro-scratches on an acrylique screen...

Re: Dust specks between acrylic front panel and OLED: QA/QC issues?

I think the same way as N00b.

After reading the postings above, I have closely inspected the display of my ADI-2 Pro with a microscope (no joke), and found few dust particles here and there.

Had a hard time to see them, because there was so much dust on the outside that was impossible to completely remove (no "Cleanroom" at hand here),
I have never noticed them in normal use, can't even see them without strong magnification, and not at all if the display is on.

Then I inspected my floor and found even more dust particles, so I have to fire my cleaning woman (joke).

Jokes aside, have you ever noticed, that you do not notice all the dust and dirt that's on every display around you, your cell phone, your computer monitors, everywhere?

Well said N00b.

Kai, I also inspected my two ADI-2 Pro FS R BE (studio + recording corner) with the result that I can't see any degration with my eyes: no scratches, no dust.

BTW, we use this to get the dust from the surface:

Agreed, you're right. That's one of the main reasons I chose RME (too).

Unless you're referring to other posts, the photos that I've uploaded have all been made with a regular phone and under regular desk lighting. And here we're discussing about acrylic, not glass. Different materials require different polishing procedures to obtain a mirror-like, new finish. Nothing unachievable or unheard of.
No reputable lens manufacturer would ever sell a lens that has visible scratches, especially ones that are visible to the naked eye - no matter what type of lighting you choose to use to perform your 'investigations'.

To conclude, if the lens meets your acceptance criteria then I guess it's okay. In the end, you'll be the one using it.

The dust contamination can be completely avoided.

I can see those scratch’s, I think RME should use protective film like a lot of other manufacturers.
Just checked mine 3 months old.     Not a single scratch mark ect, looks as smooth as a mirror.

These acrylic screens are very soft
I always use a very fine powder brush to remove dust ect.

Always blow any dust from a unit before cleaning.
Even micro particles will scratch.
But looking at your video there are scratches, that would annoy me.

It’s tricky situation hrmm the retailer is saying that the units are fine,
I don’t think it’s really acceptable to find scratches on new units no matter how faint.

I think RME should look into this.  Obviously poor QC   They could loose sales .

Yes, and I honestly don't see the problem: if you search micro-scratches with a proper inspection system (strong light, back lighting and close up picture) on any smooth reflecting material, you will find some. Try your windshield, your phone screen etc.
Let's be honest: you can't see those in daily and normal use of the unit...

This. And anyone who sends his unit back will be very sorrow soon when he can't buy a new unit anymore (due to the AKM plant on fire). The price of the ADIs includes stellar specs and software/features, not an Apple style housing and gorilla glass front. That would easily double the price.

Truth is we cannot build as many units as we could sell, and just expanded the manufacturing line. Then came the fire. We'll see what happens after Christmas...

I'm talking about taking delivery of a brand new premium device that features dust sandwiched between the visor and the screen (visible under daylight with "bare eyes", at arm-reach distance) and surface scratches visible under room light - straight out of the box.

I believe that your reply is slightly off topic. I appreciate the intention, though. smile

Re: Dust specks between acrylic front panel and OLED: QA/QC issues?

I've gotta chime in and say that if my AU$4000 UFX+ had dust specks between display layers that could only be the result of a QC issue, I'd be returning it and getting a new one.  And if I couldn't do that, I'd be raising hell because there's no way I'd put up with that.  We're spending big dollars on premium products and should be getting such.

Well said.
The ADI-2 series are remarkable in so many ways, and a tribute to their designers.
I have (had) an ADI-2 PRO fs, and ADI-2 PRO FS R BE that i just purchased and an ADI-2 and even if they had those tiny cosmetic issues (they don't) they'd still represent compelling value.
No windows 10 driver problems, no software compatibility problems of any sort, and I use them with several players and tools (AVID, iZotope, vinylstudio, REW, etc.) with flawless results on several different PCs and workstations.
What's not to love?

Re: Dust specks between acrylic front panel and OLED: QA/QC issues?

Sorry to refloat this old thread, was just wondering if what's being referred to as acrylic here is actually acrylic or, in fact, something a bit tougher like the stuff smartphone screens are made of, which would make more sense in current times. Acrylic OTOH scratches very easily.

Hard enough to stand the test of time:
I just wiped the screen of my years old ADI-2 Pro and there isn‘t the faintest scratch.

What have 'current times' to do with the fact that you don't wear the UFX on your wrist? And typically nothing ever touches the screen? That would be just wasted money.

Oh MC...my Mind runs wild. big_smile

Ex: As we've seen in past postings with the Red Stdby Ring keeping some users awake, it would then seem that there are users that sleep with their ADI-2 DACS (and whatever "else" may be involved)...

Viewed in this Eerie Light, we should thank Heavens they don't wear their UFXs on their Wrist. wink

My nearly 3.5yr old ADI-2 DAC still sports an un-sullied Screen that is free of scratches, smudges, or any other sign of human interaction.

Given the number of destroyed Gorilla Glass displays I've seen, and all leading me to believe that many consumers simply don't give a f**k...

I do!

My take-away has been that Careful handling of an expensive bit of sensitive electronics is my assurance that my Vintage Acrylic Screen will remain in Factory-Fresh condition for as long as I own the device.

Cool as is! Nothing more needed.
