Topic: Multi Client ASIO driver

Good evening:

After buying a new custom built Windows 10 laptop PC, I need to upgrade my soundcard. These are my requirements:

- six physical speaker outputs for mixing in 5.1 surround
- low latency
- solid drivers and ongoing support
- multi client ASIO driver

The last point is really important ... need to run several programs simultaneously (Reaper, Sibelius, Dorico, maybe checking out a youtube video, maybe also Pro Tools although PT doesn't like to play with other programs).

I do not record large live sessions with many microphones etc. but low latency with VSTs is important, and having ASIO drivers that are multi client is especially important. It's kind of frustrating to have to throw out a lot of older hardware which is no longer supported.

I think the answer is yes, but RME does have multi client ASIO drivers, correct? I was thinking about the unit below.

Many thanks,
Peter

Re: Multi Client ASIO driver

Hi Peter,

excellent choice.

The Round Trip Latency (RTL) for audio via USB or Thunderbolt is very low. I colleced it for different RME products for several ASIO buffersizes up to 512 as reported from the ASIO driver (note: the reported values from RME ASIO driver are accurate)-
You can find it here in my blog: https://www.tonstudio-forum.de/blog/ind … 8-RME-UFX/

RME ASIO driver have low latency and are multi-client, its e.g. a prerequisite for RME DIGICheck to work.

In terms of 5.1: the RME control room is not yet prepared for such formats, but its on the RME todo list, as you can read in this forum. But you can define easily a fader group of output channels to control the volume for several output channels at once.

Further information about RME products, use cases, MADI setups, integration of ADI-2 Pro, etc you can find here in this article overview: https://www.tonstudio-forum.de/blog/ind … Cbersicht/

Also an Excel which compares the different USB/FW/TB recording interfaces:

Re: Multi Client ASIO driver

Thank you very much for the quick response, Ramses.

What is "RME control room"? Is that something to automatically choose a speaker configuration?

As long as I am able to send discrete audio to each of the six speakers, I am good. I have Sonarworks to correct room inbalances (with the microphone).

All the engraving programs (Sibelius, Dorico) are stereo, as long as they work and I can hear something, I am happy.

Most important thing by far is solid support for hardware, including drivers.

Thanks again.

Re: Multi Client ASIO driver

You're welcome, Peter wink

In TotalMix FX you can assign output channels to the control room as "Main Out", "Main Out B", "Phones 1..4".
By this these channels get the usual control room features as
- mono
- dim
- switch between Monitor A and B
Would be nice to have, but as you say yourself it's not required.

Re: Multi Client ASIO driver

Allright Ramses, you convinced me.

I bought the RME Fireface UFX+ from Sweetwater.

Sweetwater also threw in a free Remote Control device. I don't know what that is and how it works. I think it is a hardware USB device that you can control the interface?

Anyways, I am quite excited. smile

I want to create music again.

Re: Multi Client ASIO driver

The ARC USB is a refined version of the old ARC (Advanced Remote Control).
You can connect it either to the back of the UFX+ which has a special USB port dedicated for the connection of the ARC USB
or alternatively to the PC.
In TotalMix FX you can configure the one or other butten with other useful functions.
Its very comfortably to connect the remote to the PC and to place it right beside the mouse to be able to select volume, snapshots, routing and other control room functions like Mute, Dim, Monitor B, ... See manual.

Terrific, many thanks!

You must be working for RME no? You know so much about their products.

My USF+ is scheduled to arrive this Saturday, kind of excited to hook it up and try it out. I will have a lot of questions about how to optimize my setup.

I am happy and sad at the same time. Until now I used the M Audio projectmix I/O. It is a really nice interface, with motorized 10 centimeter faders. Not the lowest latency, but those faders are super nice.

Time to move on though ... it doesn't have windows 10 drivers, and only 4 physical outputs.

Onwards, and upwards!

Re: Multi Client ASIO driver

You could use the time and watch some excellent RME videos to become familiar with TotalMix FX and it's capabilities upfront.
The RME videos are extremely nice to watch, because the information is up to the point, not the otherwise usual "bla" factor of other videos.

I put together a list of videos: https://www.tonstudio-forum.de/blog/ind … al-Videos/

I would also have a look at the very informative manuals, these are real good technical manuals which describe all the features very well: ports, settings, TM FX capabilities, remarks regarding USB, technical data, latency..

These videos are terrific. Is that you in the videos?

In the meantime, my UFX+ is still in transit ... Fedex is sending it all over the US. It was picked up in Indiana (Sweetwater), then sent to Ohio, then to Missouri, Texas, New Mexico, and now it is somewhere in California. ETA is end of Monday.

All good things to those that wait. smile

You mean the RME tutorial videos? No, I am not from RME.
