Topic: Multiface 2 as standalone into optical 'in' of another sound card?

hello,
would the RME multiface 2 function as a stand alone?
as in hooking up power, and connecting the MF2 optical out into a modern soundcard like babyface, or even a simpler brand sound card that accepts optical input channels?

I've got a pcmcia2pci, sonnert converter to thunderbold, but now with new macbook USB 3 only, I want to just use the MF2 as expansion

Re: Multiface 2 as standalone into optical 'in' of another sound card?

I am very interested to know this.
The question is :
Does the MF2 store the Totalmix settings inside like the Fireface 400 does ?

No it needs a connection to a computer to load firmware and settings. Once loaded it can be disconnected when it has power.

That sounds great and is also the answer to the starting question.

And just to be 100% certain, it looses its settings and firmware once the power is removed and will need a computer again next time you need it.

Re: Multiface 2 as standalone into optical 'in' of another sound card?

Thanks Vinz you just destroyed my dream.
i wanted to grab my old multiface out of the storage boxes and use it as a adat converter after do a configuration for once.
Clock setting to external adat and all output faders to zero for having 8 analog outputs.
But then I let it be as you say it does not store the settings.
Or is there a chance it would work by default ?
Any solution ?

No except keeping the power on forever after you set it.
Sorry for the dream....
Still that might be doable, if you also have access to a hdsp card for when the power fails.

Re: Multiface 2 as standalone into optical 'in' of another sound card?

So, im trying to understand, Waedi asked about saving the total mix and using as standalone.
but my question was, can the Multiface be used just as ADAT optical converter and plugged into another card optical input, so adding more inputs that the second card can control?

In order to use it as stand-alone, it should be capable of storing the Totalmix and settings inside.
Otherwise you can't say for sure what's going on.
The only thing we can do is try out.
Set it on power and connect the toslink cables and see if there is locking and sound coming out ?

Only if it is connected, or can be connected at startup to a hdsp card, not without.
