Topic: How to connect Madi devices ?

Connecting 2 devices ( Madiface Pro and Octamic XTC ), very simple, just connect the madi optical cabel with the madi socket on each device, done. Right ?

But how to connect 3 devices ? Madiface Pro and Octamic XTC and a M-32/M-16 DA ?

Shall I cut a Madicable plug into two pieces ?

Or do I need to replace the Madiface Pro by a Madiface XT ?

Just wondering

Re: How to connect Madi devices ?

Hello,

I just bought a Madiface Pro, a M-32 AD and a M-32 DA.

I assume I have to connect everything like this?

- MADI Out from the Madiface Pro to MADI In of the M-32 DA
- MADI Out of the M-32 DA to MADI In of the M-32 AD
- MADI Out of the M-32 AD to MADI In of the Madiface Pro

Re: How to connect Madi devices ?

Hi Thomas,

Yes, cabling looks good.

But may I ask why you didn't purchase the more modern M-32 Pro AD and M-32 Pro DA ?

The M-32 Pro AD/DA provides you with
- a signal-to-noise ratio of up to 120 dB(A) with extremely low THD value
- more up to date converters with much lesser converter latency
  AD: 37 vs 5 samples @44.1-96 kHz
  DA: 27 vs 7 samples @single speed, 27 vs 5,5 samples 88.2-192 kHz
- ref level can be set on a per port basis, with the older model you can set it only for all ports at once.
This might not give you the required flexibility in case you need to connect different types of devices
to be able to configure the port for highest SNR / dynamic range.
- MADI and AVB ready
- redundant power supply
- only 1 RU
- ok you need patch bays, but this can have the advantage for you that ports become better accessible to you and to be
able to use cables with XLR plugs
- combination of level displays and channel labelling fields with provided transparent paper and magnetic covers
Gives analog feeling and excellent overview about signal levels, as each channel can be properly labaled.

The price difference is very low between old and new model: around €190.

Re: How to connect Madi devices ?

Hi Ramses,

For this setup I will need Simplex Multimode SC-SC Fibers, as opposed to Duplex cables.

I'm aware of the ALVA product line, and I can get a 0.5 m cable to connect the M-32 Pro AD with the M-32 Pro DA.

The MADI cables to the Madiface Pro will need to be longer than the 1m maximum offered by Alva.

i've been looking around and see vendors selling 2 or 3 m cables, but one of the metrics is the Connector type : PC / UPC / APC.

https://community.fs.com/blog/pc-vs-upc … -type.html

Can I order UPC or even APC ones or does it not really matter?

Anything else I need to pay attention to?

Will these work out for me :

Or can you point me to any other vendors?

Re: How to connect Madi devices ?

Hi Thomas,

in this case you only need 3x OM3 or OM4 multimode cables with SC plug (which you get out of 2 duplex cables):
MADIface Pro  ----- SC ----- M-32 Pro AD ----- SC ----- M-32 Pro DA ----- SC -----+
(MADIface Pro) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

BTW .. there are not only different connector standards (SC, LC) to consider. You should also decide on the type of multimode cable: OM3 (color: Aqua) or OM4 (color: Violet).

If the devices are in different floors / rooms and you need to use fiber optical inhouse cabling (OM3, OM4 multi-mode), then use the cable type of your inhouse cabling, don't mix OM3/4.

If you connect the devices back to back, then there is no difference between OM3 and OM4, both support 1km cable length with transfer speeds of 1 Gigabit. Only with transfer speeds of 10 Gbit and  higher (which is both not the case here) then OM cabling gives you advantages in terms of max length. But as I said, for this type of cabling in a rack it does not matter, you should only stick to one cable standard and nowadays this is either OM3 or OM4.

In the past there was a price difference between OM3 and OM4 cables, but in the shop where I looked now, both cables had the same price, therefore I would suggest to simply choose OM4 cables (more flexible usable, "future proof").

BTW .. I would not look for simplex cables, some shops only offer duplex cables. I think then you will automatically get more hits .... You can make a single cable out of a duplex cable yourself easily. SC and LC cables have a plastic connector around the plugs which you can open and then you have quickly two separate cables (and in some cases one spare cable).

Back to back cabling (without in house cabling)? Get 2x OM4 Duplex cable of e.g. 1m (provide a little reserve regarding length):
OM4 SC-SC https://www.kabelscheune.de/LWL-Kabel-L … patchkabel

Two example for OM4 cables with other plugs that you might need in case of adding RME equipment using SC plugs:
OM4 LC-LC https://www.kabelscheune.de/LWL-Kabel-L … patchkabel
OM4 LS-LC https://www.kabelscheune.de/LWL-Kabel-L … patchkabel
