Topic: Volume control between phones and IEM

I have DAC version.

Have read the great manual but cannot figure this out...

I have two headphones that I would like to use at the same time. I have them running fine from phones and IEM ports but volume difference between those is currently too big and I cannot figure out how to change that. It does not matter if I have phones or IEM as "primary" output. Both outputs are controlled with volume control (as I would like it to be).
Is there way to change volume difference between outputs so headphones with different sensitivities are run at same volume?

Re: Volume control between phones and IEM

I do not have the DAC anymore since longer time and didn't follow the changes on it closely ..

But I know that the DAC model has - unlike the Pro - only one D/A converter.
Therefore you have only one volume setting for Phones and IEM output.

On the Pro you can set two different volumes for either two phones or phones/xlr out.

Re: Volume control between phones and IEM

The only way to solve this is a passive volume control for the louder ‘phones.

Like this high quality one from Sennheiser:

Re: Volume control between phones and IEM

Correct. All you can do is set the Phones output to Lo-Power, and use an external phones attenuator (adapter cable). But it will never match as perfect as with the ADI-2 Pro. Google 'volume attenuator for headphones' for some ideas.

Re: Volume control between phones and IEM

Was afraid this is the case... Unfotunately main headphones from phones output are the ones louder and would not like to mess with those.

Have to experiment with switching main headphones to IEM output and then it would be possible to lower volume to secondary pair with "resistor".

Re: Volume control between phones and IEM

But where is the problem ? You have only two ears and you hear either over the one or over the other at a time ...

I would store the two typical volumes, that you use and save it to one of the two user presets.

Then you can either map it to keys in the front or use the remote and then simply recall the one or other volume.
Fine adjustments you can make with the remote or at the device as you need.

This is the way I would solve it.

If you do not necessarily need the iem output and if want to perform phone comparisons quite often (for whatever reason) then the pro model might have been the better choice for you.

This is not about to “mess with those”.
It’s a quality, inexpensive, readily built solution using a variable resistor / voltage divider of good quality.

Planar magnetics, AUDEZE, Hifiman and the like, do work perfectly with the proposed attenuator, they just sound the same, but quieter.

Dynamics like the Sennheiser HD-800, HD-600, Focal Clear, ..., partly get more bass, quite often a welcome improvement.

Multi-amature IEM’s quite often, but not always, significantly change their sound, due to their largely frequency-dependent impedance.
But this is not touching your situation.

In case:
Don’t worry about “damping factor”.
Electrical damping doesn’t play a role for headphones, they 99% rely on mechanical damping only.

But:
Maybe switching outputs and selecting lo or high power on the main out might already do the trick for you.

Re: Volume control between phones and IEM

Use case would be to watch movies or something with two people at same time. So mostly multimedia use rather than anything professional stuff.

And also to change between headphones depending on use case but that would work with tips from ramses.
Other headphones are way better technically but cannot be worn whole day for youtube marathon smile

Better phones are focal clears which are easy to drive and to my ear sounds great from IEM output so might end up using that and get attenuator for comfort sennheisers.

Re: Volume control between phones and IEM

Yeah, I know those types of units exists.

After getting Focal Clears I experimented with EQ stuff on computer. Clears really like some little tweaking!
Got ADI-2 for it's EQ for TV, Xbox, etc use to have same EQ for all inputs. Works really fine and sounds fantastic.

Sennheisers (HD598) does not seem to change that much with same EQ settings and if some, to better so now trying to figure out how I can use both at same time with two people or change between them easily based on mood/use case.
