Topic: how to set hardware input level in TotalMix

Hello RME Experts,

I've been an owner of the Neve Portico Master Buss Processor for almost a year now. I'm a fan of the compression and limiting. One problem I have is wrapping my head around getting the signal from the MBP back into my without clipping the input convertor on my UFX+. I am setting the limiter ceiling on the MBP and I hear it limiting quite a bit. Despite this aggressive limiting and hard ceiling from the MBP, I keep clipping the UFX+ input convertor on the back to the DAW from the MBP.  I see on the RME UFX+ TotalMix virtual console that there is a "level" setting for hardware inputs with the options: " +4 dbu" or "lo gain". When I set the UFX+ channels to "lo gain", the MBP no longer clips the input converter. I had heard that most modern outboard hardware gear should be set to +4 dbu. What does the RME community think about this? Are there some hardware units that should be set to "lo gain"? Is there any signal degradation using "lo gain" vs "+4 dbu"?

Thanks,

Re: how to set hardware input level in TotalMix

Setting Low Gain decreases the sensitivity of your UFX+'s inputs.
In the technical specs you can see clearly, that this setting allows for hotter input signals up to 19dBu.
