Topic: UFX+ screen flickering when powering up

This started happening a few days ago:

Eventually it does power up and from that point onward it's fine. I'm assuming some capacitors in the PSU might be acting up? My UFX+ is powered through a Furman PL-Plus C E so as far as current that comes to it, it should be squeaky clean!

I purchased this UFX+ in January 2017 at Thomann (but am myself living in Croatia), so it is out of Thomann's 3 year warranty... I'd like to know if there's something I can do myself (or through a friend who's great with electronics) to fix it. I don't have a spare audio interface and due to nature of my work I cannot afford to be without my UFX+ for longer than a day.

I can't diagnose this from a distant. If your friend is trained for electronics he might be able to check the power supply. This one is not like the old UFX ones, it only supplies a single +12 V to all boards.

Hmmm, ok. You don't have even a faintest idea what could cause this?


Because, if I turn the UFX+ off now and turn it back on it doesn't flicker like that at all. It has a pretty normal powerup.

I assume if I leave it like 30-60 minutes for capacitors to drain then it would power up with the same flickering then. Or something like that.

Well, I have now left the UFX+ powered up for over a week, it seems all good. But if there's a power outage I fear what will happen or will it even be able to turn back on again...

I just ordered a new internal power supply for my ADI8AE when it gave problems, it could have been the wrong diagnosis, but luckely it was not, been working 100% since. Replacing the PSU in an ADI8 is easy. I would guess in in the ufx+ too, but you could just open her up and have a look.  It is probably on a singe replaceable board. Price is mostly around 100E.

Well, it's gone now. Doesn't wanna power up anymore. I've had it powered on without turning it off for months (well, since my last post), and now it just doesn't want to turn on again. Plus it's out of warranty.

I'm sad.

I received the PSU in mail today!

I'd like to know if replacing this single PCB is something simple that I could do myself, or if it's better to take it to an electronics specialist?

I and I am no electronic genius, could do it myself, it was very easy. Unscrewing the PSU PCB and removing a connector (2 connectors in my case, a ADI8). I would say, if you can replace a desktop PSU, you can do it.
If you open your ufx and are not at ease with it, go to a technician.

Annnnd it really was easy! My UFX+ is back up and running again!


Had a small issue with one screw, sadly I accidentally destroyed the Philips head so it couldn't be unscrewed, so had to drill through it in order to open the unit. But once opened, it really was two cables to unplug, 4 screws to remove PCB, plop new one back in, Bob's your uncle.


That was really simple and brilliant design by RME crew! I just wish the PSU didn't blow up after only 4.5 years of use... And I don't even use it 24/7...



Either way - back to being a happy, happy RME user!

that is awesome EvilDragon! congratulations!

might I suggest you look into some cooling options for your UFX+ as indicated in another thread here in the interface area? Heat is the number one enemy of electronics and if the UFX's get as warm as I've heard, it would help greatly to reduce the stress on your new power supply smile here is the thread:  https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=34825
