Topic: Adi 2 dac fs balanced

Can I ask
When digital volume is lowered does it lower output voltage?

If so. Iam trying to drop 4v out balanced to around 2.6 v

Anyone?

So with the ADI-2 DAC FS you should come down from 4,6 to 2,4 V eff
by reducing the volume from -3,5 to -9 with auto reflevel on
when using its XLR balanced outputs.

Otherwise, without auto reflevel enabled you should choose the reflevel +13 dBu and turn the volume knob to -3.

I hope this gives you a good overview (and that I did no stupid mistake).

The reason I am asking is iam testing a top... pa5 amp  which is 2.6v   Although it will work fine with 4v.  But risks clipping.

So if I change my reference from +7  to +13 then - 3db on adi  this will give me
2.4v. Am I correct?

Re: Adi 2 dac fs balanced

You could also use autoreflevel, this I would regard as an advantage if you intend to use B/T, PEQ, dynamic loudness.
Then you only need to turn the volume knob until reflevel changes from reflevel +13 to +19 dBu and then turn volume back by -3.5dB. Then you are again back at 2,45Veff.

Thank you Ramses.
I don’t need b/t ect
Will use +13 autoref off dial back volume 3.5.  2.45 volts  xlr out.  perfect thanks again.  Cheers

Ramses.
I have a query.
What’s difference between xlr balanced +13  -3.5 volume     and +7    -1.5 vol.  wouldn’t both setting give me 2.4v output?

Re: Adi 2 dac fs balanced

XLR balanced:

+13 dBu -3.5 dB volume = +8.5 dBu = 2.31 V nominal.

+7 dBu +1.5 dB volume = +8.5 dBu = 2.31 V nominal again,
- but only 1.5 dB headroom left for Inter Sample Peaks, ISPs which are typically 3 dB above full scale with the hot mastered music these days.

If your amp is spec’ed with exactly 2.6 V (= + 10.51 dBu), and you take the +3 dB ISPs into account, you‘re better off at:

Reference level +7 dBu, Volume 0 dB, +3 dB ISPs = +10 dBu = 2.45 V.

This perfectly fits to ADI-2’s 3 dB headroom above reference level, and leaves a tiny headroom of 0.5 dB for your amp to stay clean (spec’ed values are usually referenced to 1% distortions, that you don’t want for sure).

I wish I understood this. I've tried but I just don't seem to get it. Maybe you can help? I'm using unbalanced RCA from my ADI-2 DAC FS to my integrated amp. Reference level is set to the (default?) +13 with auto reference level set to on. I have the volume set to -5. Is your chart saying that I should have the volume set a bit higher for a full dynamic response from the DAC? Thanks! Jeff

Re: Adi 2 dac fs balanced

A few dB more or less not so important, you won't hear any difference.
With ADI-2 DAC FS and RCA outputs you have max SNR/dynamic range at e.g. volume level 0, -6, -12, -18 (the screenshot doesn't show the last two):
- if autoreflevel is ON and
- assumed that you do not use B/T, PEQ, dyn loudness

Thanks. I do use several EQ settings so I suppose I better leave some room. I at least know (I think) to set things so I don't see the "ovr" message flashing on the screen.
