Topic: Suggestions about volume management

Hi all!

After years of thinking about the ADI-2 DAC, finally purchased one. This is so AWESOME.
The Loudness feature is a godsend for me...Add to this the PEQ and this is a dream come true.

I previously misunderstood something while reading the manual and it is the fact that when using Auto Ref Lev, you can push the unit to the absolute max. Using one of the 4 ref level, you are limiting for the 3 lower ones...

I thought it could be selected even in autoref to be the max signal level you want to output.

This gave me an even better idea. Here's my whishes:

1) The option to determine a max output level in dBr (Ex: -15dBr)
Even if a guest or a kid turn the volume to the max, it wouldn't go further.

2)The option to determine an output level in dBr at startup.

I believe those functions would be pretty useful to many users and would be relatively easy for RME to add.
What do you guys think?
Thanks for reading!

I’m not commenting pro or contra your proposal, but:

Meanwhile the best way to limit the max. level is the use of passive attenuators, as they even increase signal quality.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I’m aware of those pads or attenuators. I’d still prefer a digital solution. I’m worried about clipping with an attenuator. I mean for exemple, my max level is currently about -15 dB. With a 15db attenuator, I would be around 0. My understanding is that the RME has 2.5db of headroom. However the volume can go up to +6dB. (My guess is that it might be to compensate for low input sources????)

The best for me would be both.
Exemple 15dB attenuators + 0dB digital ceiling. That way, would have 2.5db of headroom for PEQ and tone control without worrying about clipping the output. And, without my sons going to +6.

Anyway, will probably buy the suggested single ended has it offers -15 and -20 so I would be good!!!

Thanks!!!
