Topic: Performance Issues (Babyface / Driverkit / MacOS 12 / Pro Tools)

Hi all -

I've been having poor performance under MacOS 12

Pro Tools drops out of plan or exhibits buffer issues.
If I change to any other audio interface, it works fine.
If I change back to Babyface, it's bad.

It does pass audio, but not consistently and I get stops and glitches often enough I can't get work done.

Steps taken:
- reinstall drivers
- did full rebuild of all Pro Tools prefs etc, though this seems not the issue (as PT plays fine e.g. with headphone out; anything except Babyface is fine.)

Steps NOT tried:
- reverting to KEXT driver

Babyface (original) currently up to date on Firmware v226, DriverKit Driver 4.08
Pro Tools 2023.3 running in Rosetta mode.

A little further:

- glitches in audio also exhibited in other software.  Ableton Live for instance.

- Seems to have started with OS update to 12.6.5

Further:
- reinstalled the latest KEXT driver (made no attempt to uninstall DK driver first)
- still glitching.

Result:  Babyface not usable on this system at this time.

note:  after installer run (with reduced security per instruction) I was *not* presented with the grey “allow” button in the General tab of Security and Privacy prefs. I’ve previously had the KEXT installed, so perhaps the permission is preserved?

Why not update the MacOS ?

MacOS 12.6.5 is already the latest security update for OS12.

Not ready to transition to OS13 yet;  I tend to stay on the trailing edge of OS updates, to keep my systems happy / more stable.

Are you proposing I *reinstall* the OS?

On my computer MacbookAir M1 with Ventura 13.3.1 Logic and Reaper playing fine, no stutter glitches dropouts, no issues, RME driver 4.08.
That's why I mentioned the OS upgrade.
I never did reinstall, so I can't recommend.
I just did the upgrade via software update and everything went good.

Good to know.
what RME hardware are you using?

I will look into it.

Ah yes I see…just after I hit send:) oops!
so presumably all this hardware including original babyface is working. A good sign.
I will investigate the Ventura upgrade.

For now I work just with headphones directly into the computer.

Yes all works fine.
And I often use the computer without any interface, sometimes with a headphone.
Good luck !

Experiencing same issues with any driver; booted unit in Class Compliant mode and also experiencing same issues (playback is stuttery and unstable.)

Considering possibility this is a hardware issue.
