Topic: RME ADI DAC 2 - "Overload Short/Detected" with HD800S

Hello,

I've been enjoying this ADI DAC 2 for a while with my HD600. Today I've for the first time plugged in a set of HD800S (to the front 4.4mm Phones jack), and shortly after I saw the message among the lines of "Overload Short/Detected".

I've never seen this before with the HD600. I bought these HD800S new, but the box took some hits along the way and it was quite busted. But the headphones sound fine, and do not seem to have taken any damage. Can this error at all be explained by anything that isn't the DAC itself?

It hasn't occured since, but I am just wondering how worried I should be that either of my devices is faulty.
I bought this ADI DAC 2 FS used, and it has worked without issues for a good month, so I do not really have any reason to expect there to be a problem with it.

I did try searching around, but I am very new to all this and I don't really know if this can be explained in any way.

First possibility: Pentaconn plug inserted incomplete.

If that‘s not the case, there’s a good chance that it’s just a cable issue.
I’ve seen original Sennheiser cable’s isolation fall apart close to the headphone’s side connector.

Check with the cable unplugged at the headphones cup’s side: can you replicate the issue this way?
If yes, the ‘phones are OK, replace or repair the cable.

I've not been able to replicate the error, I did only see it once thus far total. After 2 hours of use now, it has been fine. It's just a bit weird to see it at all, and I am not entirely sure what to make of it.

You mean deattach the headset from the cable and see if I can make the error occur again? I will give it a try if the error happens once more. I am still a bit iffy about disconnecting the pentaconns with some of the stuff I've read about them breaking etc. I need to do some research on how to do that properly.

In any case I am glad that the problem does not necessarily have to be with the DAC then.

Thanks. I will monitor the experience. For now I guess I can say that having seen this error once, does not mean something is undoubtedly wrong with the headset? That is just kind of what I wanted to rule out I guess. If such were the case then I feel like I should use my return window for this  HD800S. But if I keep using it for a while longer and not notice the error at all, it should be safe to say that perhaps there was a bad connection or something like that?

That‘s true here, I was assuming we are talking about an ADI-2/4 Pro SE, because of the mentioned 4.4 mm (= Pentaconn) plug.

If in fact we have an ADI-2 DAC, there‘s only a 6.3 mm / 1/4“ TRS plug that has Overload Protection.

The conclusions finally are the same.

If the problem never reappears we can ignore it, incomplete plugged connector, likely.


The special connectors at the Sennheiser HD 800 are straight plugs, non-locking.
They just sit quite firmly.

To remove, grab the plug (NOT THE CABLE) firmly and pull out straight.
Watch out to hold the cup on it‘s frame and don‘t press on the grids, to avoid bending them.
