Topic: ADI-2 AHB2 gain

New to the forum and first post.  Have been using the ADI-2 for a few years and love the dac.  Recently switched to a LA4 preamp and AHB2 amp.  I am trying to get the ADI-2 dialed in with these new components.

I am using XLR outs on the dac into the LA4.  Benchmark suggested setting the RME ref-level out to +19dbu and the AHB2 to the mid gain setting.   I have also tried the AHB2 on the lower gain setting.   I can use my ear in determining sound preference between the two gain settings, but am more curious about what is actually happening to determine an optimal level between a dac setting, the LA4, and the AHB2 gain settings.

According to this web page Maximum input and output voltage    20Vrms (+28dBu)
ADI-2 Pro FS R BE: output level +24 dBu @ 0dBFS.

This means that the ADI-2 Pro FS (with normal settings) can't overload the input of the Benchmark Preamp.
So … do whatever you prefer. Use auto ref level, dynamic loudness and set the volume on Benchmark Preamp and Power Amp to your taste. The benchmark preamp volume not too silent, otherwise you get less dynamic.

If you want to check for distortion yourself (careful with the volume!!!):
