Topic: Rme UC/UCX compatibility with OS X sequoia

Hello, does the rme uc work with OS X sequoia? Iam thinking about upgrading my m1 MacBook Pro’s OS X and would like to make sure if it’s compatible.
Btw. I will most likely use it with protools ultimate 2024.9 if this matters…
Thanks in advance

Re: Rme UC/UCX compatibility with OS X sequoia

you have a working driver installed and the interface is working fine ?
No problem you can upgrade the MacOS to the newest update.

Thanks. Yes, it’s working fine with OS X Monterey. I will backup everything beforehand anyway. Will I need to change firmware, driver etc or should it work straight away?

Re: Rme UC/UCX compatibility with OS X sequoia

No need to change firmware as it is working at the moment..
I would update the firmware and driver to the latest version just for having the system up-to-date.

Re: Rme UC/UCX compatibility with OS X sequoia

Hello Forum!

I'm trying to connect my Firewire UCX interface to an M1 Max MacBook Pro running macOS 15.5 (Sequoia). I've followed the required steps:

1. Enabled "Allow user management of kernel extensions from identified developers" in Startup Security Utility.

2. Rebooted and approved the "RME driver" in Privacy & Security settings.

However, the system isn’t showing the Fireface USB Settings under System Settings > General > Extensions to permit the driver extensions.

*Hardware: No FireWire ports were found. sad

Issue: The driver extension option isn’t appearing at all. Thats why i cannot allow the FIREFACE USB Settings and my interface is just blinking but not working. Has anyone encountered this on Sequoia? Any fixes or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You need these instructions:
https://rme-audio.de/rme-macos.html
and
https://rme-audio.de/driverkit-info.html

To install the Driverkit driver (after updating firmware), no startup security procedure is required.

Make sure the unit is not in CC-mode
The Class Compliant mode can be activated and deactivated by the button on the front panel at any time.
Push the knob for 2 or 3 seconds

Re: Rme UC/UCX compatibility with OS X sequoia

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for sharing those details. I've installed the Kernel extension driver, updated the firmware, and installed the DriverKit driver.
Despite this, my UCX interface keeps blinking (I attached a video to show this below). I also tried reinstalling the Fireface driver, but it still doesn't connect. I'm not sure what I'm missing.  I'd really appreciate any ideas on how to fix it.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

What are these white things ?

Are you connecting a firewire cable over adapters ?

Please try a USB cable from the interface to the computer.

Re: Rme UC/UCX compatibility with OS X sequoia

You need to connect the external power supply.
And the Driverkit driver is for USB only.

Hi Waidi and Daniel,

Yes, I was trying to connect the FireWire device using a chain of two adapters: FireWire to Thunderbolt 2, then Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3. I read on the Forum that this is the recommended method to avoid power supply issues. It worked perfectly without external power on my old MacBook (macOS Monterey).

Is using a USB cable the only alternative option for 15.5 Sequoia, if I understand correctly?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Rme UC/UCX compatibility with OS X sequoia

The very recommended way is to use the external power supply.
With Sequoia it is possible to use firewire and the adapters.
It can work. With the right driver. Firewire driver 341 https://rme-audio.de/downloads/driver_fw_mac_341.zip

After Sequoia the new MacOS Tahoe will no longer work for firewire as reported here in the forum by tests with Tahoe beta version.

Do yourself a favor and use USB plus external power supply.
The Apple thunderbolt adapters are not good for power supply they will burnout soon.

Nowhere does it say so. The TB to FW dongle is limited to 7.5 Watts of delivered power, but the UCX needs > 10 Watts. That's why it doesn't start correctly, as is easy to see in your video. And that's why support correctly mentioned that you have to use the external power supply.

Where you most probably did not use these two dongles.
