Topic: Vector Audio Scope Issues / Questions

*youtube video demostrating my 'bugs'*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwTScdXeisA

As a longtime audio enthusiast and production hobbyist, I recently purchased an RME ADI-2 DAC FS for my desktop setup. I’m thoroughly impressed with the performance of both the DAC and headphone amplifier.

I’ve been using the Vector Audio Scope in DigiCheck to analyze music and YouTube videos, aiming to better understand the characteristics of various sounds and recordings. However, I’ve encountered what I believe to be potential bugs in the software, and I’m also seeking clarification on interpreting certain meter behaviors. I’ve detailed these below, along with specific examples and attached screenshots of my settings for reference.

*Im using win11 and Brave web browser

Potential Bugs in DigiCheck Vector Audio Scope

1. Mono signal indicated by +1.00 on Phase Meter, but M/S Phase Meter is constantly moving
   - Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W4Tg-zKgzw

2. Nothing displaying on M/S Phase Meter
   - Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ML2yIWnBsnM

Re: Vector Audio Scope Issues / Questions

- Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJAsz6VCf5A
   - Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUPOvcolNZg

3. M/S Phase Meter disappears entirely
   - Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghvmiM4DjM0

Re: Vector Audio Scope Issues / Questions

Questions About Interpreting Graphs/Meters

1. Uneven distribution on the X-axis
   - At 37 seconds into this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lU3oviu2S5A), the X-axis appears unevenly distributed along the line. Could you explain why this occurs?

Re: Vector Audio Scope Issues / Questions

2. M/S Phase Meter in the negative range
   - In these videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f60dheI4ARg and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JooKrvj2EPg), the M/S Phase Meter reads in the negative range. What does this indicate? Is it due to poor recording techniques, subpar post-processing, or issues with file encoding?

3. Predominant upper-half range on XY axis during speech
   - In this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KodKUYHSp88), when James Spade speaks, the line is mostly in the upper half of the XY axis. What causes this behavior?

Feature Recommendation

It would be incredibly helpful if future DigiCheck updates included clear “Left” and “Right” labels on the Vector Audio Scope for easier reference.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and insights.

Re: Vector Audio Scope Issues / Questions

Try updating to the latest non beta version of the software, 0.93.

None of your video links make any sense.

Please elaborate on how they dont make sense? They are demostrating the bugs that ive encountered.

Re: Vector Audio Scope Issues / Questions

What makes you think that the videos demonstrate "bugs" in the software and not specific characteristics of the audio content in these videos? Your third example is probably just a DC offset (haven't watched it, but that's my first assumption).

Example 1
How can a mono signal at the same time produce negative M/S readings?

Example 2
How can an M/S reading be showing but not on the Phase Meter?

That does not necesarily mean, that it is exactly mono. Just, that it is very close to mono. You have to compare signal sample by sample and samples have to be all exactly the same. Otherwise it is not mono. There might be slight differences that show up in M/S.

Not to sound harsh, but why should anyone take their time and go to a commercial site that you linked? You brought up a case and it's up to you to provide instructions and files to reproduce it.

And it's unethical to post links to YouTube where people get monetary gain from views. It looks like clickbait, to be honest. Especially when posted by a freshly registered account.

If you want to be taken seriously, you should upload the video/audio files you use as examples to another service that does not involve viewer-based monetization.

Commercial site or not has no bearing on what im experiencing. I have produced clear instructions already.

Do you honestly think im clickbaiting you by posting on an esoteric audio interface forum regarding possible bugs?

So you want me to commit copyright infringement instead of just opening the youtube video whilst looking at DigiCheck

This has got to be the most unsupportive help ive ever experienced via a company / forum.

All you have to do is open a youtube video and look at DigiCheck, it really isnt that difficult.

Or mybe this is a case of RME not being able to fathom that they do actually have bugs in their software.

My first assumption would be that Digicheck is showing me what the audio in these videos is actually like. I have no reason to assume anything is wrong unless and until you can demonstrate that other software shows different results or that generated test tones with specific characteristics produce incorrect readings in Digicheck.

With all due respect, I'd say you haven't really established why you suspect what you are seeing are bugs in the software (that went unnoticed for years and years) and not actually correct representations of the audio signals in question. To do so, it would help if you could provide some comparison demonstrating that other software shows different results.

By the way, why didn't you post screenshots of what Digicheck is showing along with each link to a video?

Your first issue is your assuming instead of investigating. Open the video and look at DigiCheck, is it normal behavior for a meter bar to completly stop reading, no its not.

Forget we are deadling with audio for a second. You have an Ipad with an issue, you walk into an Apple store and show them the problem and they respons by saying sorry, we will only look at it until you can demostrate it on another Ipad. Is this a normal way to treat a customer / user?

Im actually losing my patience. I have discovered a simple bug / issue that would take about 5mins to look into to verify if its happening or not.

Because your being so unhelpful im now going to create a youtube video that proves your wrong.

Comparing DigiCheck (or is it DigiCheck NG?) with an iPad is a bit of a stretch. DigiCheck [NG] is a free software tool that is provided "as is" and is not part of the purchase contract for your RME product nor it is an essential software that a product relies upon for its normal operation.

So if you want it to be improved, you need to make your case somewhat stronger compared to an obviously malfunctioning consumer product. And it's not that RME are unwilling to improve it; it's just that you need to be clear and patient. If there is indeed a bug, it probably will be fixed, however RME does not have to give us any promises here.

Regarding links to YouTube and your argument about copyright infringement, why do you bother to use DigiCheck on a finished other's work then in the first place? It's intended to be used as a tool for your own work. So in this case it would be better if you set up a proper, controlled test using your own facilities. Thus we could rule out any errors in the source chain.

Re: Vector Audio Scope Issues / Questions

If you can't pronounce my name, why bother spelling it out like this?

In the first example, you are replying to yourself - the signal is "just about" mono, but not perfectly. In the other examples, the signal is perfectly mono. If it's mono, there is no S component and the meter won't show anything.

In that CIA video, the meter "disappears" because the audio changes from (stereo) music to perfectly mono speech again. See above. And the last example has a significant channel imbalance... Clearly visible in the stereo level meter. Try balancing it out somehow and see what happens.

None of this indicates any bug whatsoever. Everything can be explained with audio basics.

Not everyone can pronounce German surnames, sorry for spelling it out.

Thank you for the clarification, but why still display a line though?

To me it seems as if this could have been all avoided if the M/S meter didnt show any lines when an mono source is being played.

Because apparently there is still a small residue of "stereo" that triggers the meter sufficiently to cause a reading.

I think ive finally discovered the issue then.

If you have a 'perfect' mono signal when in M/S mode it shouldnt be showing anything but instead it does.

Which contradicts,

Because apparently there is still a small residue of "stereo" that triggers the meter sufficiently to cause a reading.

Re: Vector Audio Scope Issues / Questions

Well looks like I have finally found the core issue,

The M/S Vector Audio Scope displays UFL, which according to this post, https://www.forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=11014, means digital zero.

Which means that there should be no 'line' displayed.

The BUG is a line is being falsely displayed when UFL (no signal) is present.

Turns out bugs can go 'unnoticed for years and years'

Your welcome.
