Topic: Connect 12Mic to Mac and have 2-3 headphone outputs?

Hi, what's the best way to connect 12Mic to Mac, have 2-3 headphone outputs with separate gains, and control gains from the Mac?

I bought UFX III to do this, also since I thought it would be helpful to have 16 ch. But in practice I rarely record 16, and UFX III is big (I'm always mobile).

So I thought maybe the best is to get Sonosax SX-R4+ and record internally (only one headphone amp though), or else something like Neumann MT48.

The 12mic can be connected via AVB to certain Macs directly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-Rkl7Th_1g&t=240s
In a DAW you can send to AVB channels.
An ADI-2 DAC tot the ADAT output of the 12Mic. Then you have 2 HP outputs.

It is a bit far fetched and also more equipment, but you could use Presonus Earmix via AVBhttps://www.thomann.de/de/presonus_earmix_16m.htm.

Or the MOTU Monitor 8 via ADAT or AVB, but again a 1u Rack unit.
But this is probabaly all to much equipment if you want to stay mobile.

The Sonosax is a mobile solution for you ?
Then better get the UFXlll plus Motu Monitor 8 and the 12Mic and a Rack Trolley

Connect the 12Mic to the UFXlll with a optical Madi cable
Connect the Motu to the UFXlll with a optical toslink Adat cable
Connect the UFXlll to the computer with a USB cable

control all Mic input gains out of Totalmix. Save the setting into a Totalmix workspace (with the band name) and recall this at the next session.
You have 5 headphone mixes, 1 at the 12Mic and 4 at the Motu. All mixes created and saved in Totalmix.

Re: Connect 12Mic to Mac and have 2-3 headphone outputs?

My main goal is to minimize size, weight, and setup time! I'm already flying with a huge 33kg flight case and it's prohibitively heavy and prevents me from also doing better video and even just bringing more cables for more channels.

Perhaps I should consider doing 12Mic + a cheap AVB interface like MOTU UltraLite AVB? Might be the cheapest way to get the most channels, though I imagine I can't control 12Mic gains from the computer anymore if I do that.

I really, really wish some mfr made RME-quality 6-mic-input single box that recorded to internal SSD, had AVB in for larger use cases, and had 2 headphone inputs...

Re: Connect 12Mic to Mac and have 2-3 headphone outputs?

7,7 kg the trolley rack box
2,8 kg UFX lll
2,3 kg Motu Monitor 8
2,8 kg 12Mic
--------
15,6 kg total
plus a computer MacBookAir 1,5 kg

Re: Connect 12Mic to Mac and have 2-3 headphone outputs?

Would it not work to connect 12Mic directly to the Mac and then RME DAC to 12Mic with ADAT?

I have lots of other gear that I carry at the same time and am looking for a single-box solution for flying around Europe, so no need to count trolley rack boxes.

Re: Connect 12Mic to Mac and have 2-3 headphone outputs?

Hi. I have a 12 mic connected to a motu monitor 8 using the 12mic adat outs. (2x8 mono). It’s great!! Each player can have their own “mix” which I can send from logic (bass, piano, vox etc ). I connect the 12mic via avb so it’s one long cable to the recording room.
I use a ufxiii or if wish to be portable use a babyface to monitor. (Setup aggregate device in Mac).
Works perfectly and is ultra portable.
