Topic: Asio driver problem!?

Hello, I bought 2 days ago the new Firface UFX3. I have Cubase 11 and Adobe Auditon. A Audition seems to work well with all in/outputs as it doesnt use Asio but Cubase is silent and it looks like the problem is with the Asio driver!
I checked all settings and I am helpless cause it looks like there isn`t more possibilities to change settings.
(If i choose from Cubase studio setup the Fireface UFX3 then there isn`t any more possibilities to change everything, all changes are inactive, also all inputs/outputs are inactive and for example cant switch on Direct Monitoring (its inactive), also cant choose the Asio MADiface as its recommended in manual!)
I have no more ideas what to do with it.

Re: Asio driver problem!?

Hi Ramo.

Welcome to the RME user forum, and happy new year.

With the UFX III, you got an excellent audio interface.

I have been using UFX III (and UFX, UFX+ in the past) for many years with Windows 7, 10 (also tried 11)
and with all different Cubase and now also Nuendo versions without any issue.

I think it's only a small problem, so let's see what we can find.

RamoTeder wrote:

This means either you
1. enabled all WDM devices in driver settings or
2. are using the UFX III in Class-compliant mode.

To 1: not recommended, as it creates a high load during startup as all devices are being created dynamically.
Older computers had issues with it.
But why do you do this? On Windows, it is best to use ASIO drivers for audio applications.

To 2: CC mode is intended for iPAD or Linux. Ensure, that you use the normal USB3 mode:
Check Options -> Hardware / Diagnostic -> Interface Mode: usually Auto but you can also enforce USB3

Do you know Cubase? After loading the proper RME MADIface ASIO driver, you need to add channels for inputs and outputs.
In Cubase 15 Pro, see Studio -> Audioconnections (F4).
You need to add buses for inputs and outputs.

Please provide screenshots of settings.
- RME driver settings
- Cubase (F4) Audio Connections
- and any screenshot that you regard as useful to show the problem.

I recommend
- Using Greenshot as a screenshot tool, as it's very easy to add arrows, boxes, and text to a screenshot to highlight the issue.
- Using Dropbox for placing screenshots, as you can't upload images directly to the forum.

How to post screenshots in the RME forum, see my short blog article on how to do that:

Re: Asio driver problem!?

Thank you Ramses very much!
I have MacBook pro with Tahoe26.2

1- enabled all WDM devices... -This might be the problem, but I cant choose from anywhere any other opportunities under sound settings with the Fireface UFX3 (from mac systems settings is only choose the fireface ufx3 and same in cubase audio settings the other possibilities are just inactive, if I choose built in audio, Cubase starts to play everything and then it works!)

I tryed with your recommended order from F4, yes, then it makes some in/outputs active but its still totally silent and cant choose the direct monitor or ASIO MADiface as its recommended in manual!

(its not allowed to add pics here!) sad

You talked about ASIO driver, so I had to assume you were talking about Windows.
But you have a MacBook with Tahoe, so you are using a Mac with macOS ...
macOS does not have ASIO drivers. Also not WDM devices.
In macOS driver settings there is no such dialog for creating WDM devices.

So I am really wondering what you are telling here.
That all sounds very contradictory.
I will take a look at your screenshots now...

I don't know how it can come to such a message on macOS.
Somebody else needs to take over, I have no Apple here.

Re: Asio driver problem!?

Yes, sorry, I didnt know that macOS doesnt use Asio and with my previous RME(800) the Cubase 11 worked well with same computer and I never didnt need to change any settings and thats why I thought its about Asio when it cave me that ASIO error messages!

Re: Asio driver problem!?

Thank you Ramses anyway!
Maybe I need to send my new RME Fireface UFX3 back if it just doesnt work with Cubase sad

Re: Asio driver problem!?

Check that the UFX III is available in Audio MIDI setup, and playing back audio is possible with standard apps when the UFX III is selected as system playback device.

After that you need to ask in the Steinberg Cubase Mac forum, it seems.

@ramses: Steinberg calls everything ASIO even under macOS. The ASIO driver referred here is as error not RME's, but Cubase own. So what's not working here is Cubase, not the UFX III, it seems.

Of course it works with Cubase. But so far you did not provide anything that would clarify that the unit has correct drivers, is visible in the system and does at least simple things. Screenshots of Settings dialog and TotalMix might be helpful.

That said it looks like you forgot to set up all the Audio Connections (in menu Studio). Only 2 channels seem active, if at all.

Re: Asio driver problem!?

Hello! Thank you Matthias!
It works with all other standard apps,  players, videos etc, only my Cubase 11 is totally silent even the mixer lights doesnt react which means its the problem is somehow about the driver. If I choose from Cubase sound settings the Built-in Audio, it starts to work from macbookpro speakers!

Because the built-in-speaker is a 1 stereo audio interface, no options to select different outputs.

The UFX is multichannel, Cubase can't choose output ports for you.
Cubase menu studio / audio connections  tap outputs assign output ports

Re: Asio driver problem!?

In the Fireface USB Settings dialog make clock-source internal not Madi input
Or do you have some Madi equipment connected ? In the Cubase settings you did set it to internal clock.source.
Also there is no WDM device selected as this is not available in Mac.

Cubase configuration is a mess
In Cubase connections you have created a lot of busses, some have nonsense outputs
A stereo bus with output ports phones and analog makes no sense.

https://i.ibb.co/Y42HyXNR/nonsense.jpg

Delete all busses
Set up one new bus correctly
Stereo output Left / Right assigned to output ports 1/2
Save configuration and restart Cubase, check if the assigned ports are correct
Also select another audio device internal speakers then reselect the UFX, reboot computer

Re: Asio driver problem!?

Thank you Waedi! But yeah, it doesnt change anything with making sound coming out from Cubase thru RME. I changed these things what you recommend and made during last days 20 restarts between everything and its still silence!
The silence - I can see it already from cubase mixer when i push to play song and it doesnt light to mixer at all, as it does immediately when i change to Built-in audio.

(in a way if I should need in Cubase these 12 inputs and 8 outputs, then i should use all these nonsense bus-es and they need to work! But now any change doesnt matter)

sad and helpless sad

Maybe I should ask about the problem in Cubase forum

Your answer has nothing to do with the clock-source in question

Make clock-source internal

in the Fireface USB Settings dialog

Re: Asio driver problem!?

@Ramo: you can't simply select a digital input of your choice (like e.g. MADI) as the clock source if there is no device connected that delivers a clock signal over the digital link. In a typical "one device setup" you need to use the internal clock as source.

More information regarding clock synchronization you can find in my blog:

Pleas drag a piece of audio wave into a track and play this instead of midi thru a plugin.
The plugin can be not configured right or have not selected the correct outputs in the plugin settings.

Without proper clock settings you might get clock issues over time (clicks, ..) it doesn't explain that "nothing works".
But you should simply set it proper.

In Fireface USB Settings dialog :

There is no more or less proper setting.
The clock setting has to be correct for all devices connected digital.

No need to buy. You can get demo versions of Cubase or any other DAW like Reaper.

Another idea just in case something would be wrong with your Cubase Settings.
I assume there is a folder with Cubase preferences / settings like in Windows.
Can you exit Cubase, rename this folder and restart Cubase.
Then configure everything from scratch (driver selection, adding buses to the inputs and outputs) and re-test.

Audio from Cubase you should see in TM FX middle row, SW playbacks and
needs to be routed to the HW output where your monitors are connected to.
In TM FX (submix mode):
1. in the bottom row select the hardware output where your monitors are connected to (usually HW Output AN 1/2)
2. in the middle row: move the fader of SW Playback AN 1/2 (where you see the metering from cubase) to 0 dB.
