Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for macOS

I have 3 related issues to report on TotalMix 2.0 beta 13:

1. I'm not sure if this has been reported already, but it looks like the minimum window size is way, way too small as of TotalMix 2.0beta13, meaning it's possible to set window sizes that leave TotalMix in some odd UI layout states:

2. If you switch from the new design to the old design, then back to the new design via `Toggle Old-New Design`, the minimum window size changes to be even smaller than before. This is what it looks like:

3. While resizing TotalMix between some of these ridiculously small window sizes, TotalMix crashed. Here's an excerpt from the macOS system dump (totally happy to send the whole thing via email if that would be helpful):

Steps to reproduce the crash:

1. Quit and relaunch TotalMix beta
2. Make sure TotalMix launches with the new design active
3. Toggle Old-New Design to switch to the old design
4. Toggle Old-New Design to switch back to the new design
5. Drag from the bottom right corner to resize the window as small as possible (see screenshot above)
6. From this tiny window state, try dragging the rightmost drag handle to enlarge the window horizontally. You might have to drag this back and forth multiple times.

Expected: The window resizes normally.
Actual: TotalMix crashes.


Let me know if there's any more information I could provide that would be helpful here!

System information:
- macOS 15.7.3
- MacBook Pro M4 Max
- RME Fireface UCX II (Firmware v106, Driver: v4.27)
- External Display: LG 27UL850 (not using built-in MacBook display)

Confirm, this happens here too
Tahoe M1

but it is not relevant for me for using Totalmix, I can't even call this a bug.

There is no use case for shrinking the window to minimum

Here comes beta 14, addressing various feedback (aka bugs and issues) from this and the other thread. Download links in first post - Check it out!

- Fix natural scrolling for 'non-scrolling' elements (fader up/down…)

- Added workaround for red Close button in fullscreen mode (last window is hidden)

- Fixed one pixel green line issue

- Improved network support prevents unexpected exit of TM FX on blocked network traffic

- Room EQ windows are now cached with size and scale information

- In Classic design REQ windows were wrongly positioned as well – fixed

- Nearly all dialogs will now be opened in the middle or above/below the respective element, reducing mouse travel

- Loading Snapshots with Groups (Mute, Solo, Fader) after Snapshots without Groups could cause Groups to not load

- Prevent crash when minimizing app window to atomic level

Here we go...

Confirm
shrinking window to baby size (204 x 139 px) no crash.
Finally I can buy an 8k screen and place Totalmix  1155 times in a clear arrangement, dream come true.
Natural scrolling ! How smooth the fader moves is fantastic !

Das Scrollverhalten mit dem Trackpad fühlt sich sehr gut an. Es scrollt nicht zu schnell. Wenn man es schneller haben will, wischt man schnell und lässt los und es zieht nach. Sehr gut!

Fullscreen Window schließt jetzt vernünftig und Totalmix bleibt aber aktiv. So soll es, meiner Meinung nach sein. Perfekt!

Ich habe gemerkt, dass man nun auch mit der SHIFT-Taste horizontal Scrollen kann (Mac-Shortcut). Das ist super.

Ich weis nicht genau, ob es in der Praxis gut wäre. Für mich füllt es sich an, als wäre es gut, wenn man auch ohne den Scrollbalken anzufassen vertikal scrollen könnte. Also einfach dann, wenn der Cursor grad nicht auf einem Scroll-Element ist.


Insgesamt sind alle Fixes und Verbesserungen der Beta 14 ein großer Workflow-Gewinn.

Not possible as multiple areas would overlay and this would be a mess.
Do you want to lift the fader of one channel or move the entire Totalmix mixer ?
how to move the mixer up or down without moving a fader ?
The computer can not feel your intention.

However, one should not go overboard just because some people are not sufficiently familiar with how to use it. Besides, what happens if Assign is not used? You don't have control room features, but even RoomEQ would still work. I think it's unnecessary to spoil the design of an application for that.

I would love to see a much better integration of the midi protocol implemented into Totalmix.  The beta is fine so far but it is purely cosmetic.  I think every parameter should be able to be assigned to midi based on the users preference.  I'm glad that Totalmix is getting some work, though.  I just hope it goes deeper than simply colors and sizing.

why the app name in mac is Totalmix instead of TotalMix or TotalMix FX? Can the auto-launch of these apps also be addressed? Its irritating.

- seems you (and afaik another user posted the same) are the only one(s)...

"why"...:
- because it would need to modify dozens of drivers (for each unit).
- People with older drivers would not be able to use newer single-file downloads, etc...

"or"...:
- one prefers "TotalMix" another with the addition "FX"... (myself would prefer to name it  sth like "I Love Cats.app")

However, takes 5 seconds if you want to have your custom-fancy name:
- Quit Totalmix
- Rename /Applications/Totalmix.app to /Applications/whatEverYouWant.app
- In Finder, Right-click on whatEverYouWant.app -> Make Alias
- Rename the alias to "Totalmix.app"
- No "irritations" anymore  wink

Ready for the weekend? Not yet! Check out beta 16 with these changes:

- New option Bright Skin in Preferences

- Added timeout and hysteresis to meter background control routines

- Some text colors in dark version improved

- Menu Options - Store Current State in Device – Setup 1-6 was not greyed out for units that don’t support this feature (DF Dante,  MF USB etc).

- Channel Layout Dialog fixed

The crash seems to be connected to a "none"-configured Main Out channel. Fix is on the way...

Now, to make it the most seamless experience on a mac, it would be great to have an option to have it automatically switching between the regular dark and new Bright Skin based on macOS its systemwide appearance (dark/light).

As well as introducing an option (for all interfaces not only the Babyface) to have the main mix being controllable by macOS system volume/keys. I know this is on many people's wishlist....

The new bright mode looks nice, but I think it is a little bit too bright.

Yes, it works.
The bright skin setting was like explosion, I switched it off, back to normal.
But it is great to have the option.

I installed the beta 16 and now the Totalmix fx window doesn't open in Mac OS Tahoe 26.2, it just shows the title bar.

Thanks.  Yes, I am aware of the Mackie protocol with its benefits and drawbacks... mostly drawbacks.  The benefits of allowing users to assign their own midi messages to every feature in Totalmix are:
-Hidden tracks could still be manipulated via midi (cleaner GUI)
-Users can customize the assignments to what makes sense to them
-If a user hides a track, they don't have to reconfigure their controller to accommodate the new midi positions

The main argument in favor of the Mackie protocol is that there are far too many controls and not enough midi commands to support that... which is valid.  However, on Mac, users can create as many virtual devices as desired, thus the assignments could be split between multiple devices.

Let's say each track has 40 assignable parameters (some cc and some note on/off) on my UFX III that would be 94 x 3 x 40 =11,280.  We can make it an even 11,500 to account for all of the control room options.  Each virtual device is capable of sending 2,048 CCs and 2,048 Note On messages (assuming you don't assign each velocity to a separate control which would be well over 250,000).  This means you could set up one virtual device for the inputs, one for the outputs, and one for the playback section and have more than enough midi for everything.

Realistically, most people aren't going to assign everything to midi.  They will assign what they use for their unique setup, but with products like stream deck on the market it opens up the potential for limitless controller parameters.  Mackie, though great in its day, has largely become obsolete along with its protocol.

Those are just my thoughts.  Of course, people are free to disagree with them.  I only think of things from an end user perspective not as a developer so I'm sure there are more complications than I'm aware.

Bright Skin is very bright. My favorite is the high contrast with Highlight submix frame. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continued support of TotalMix.

Regarding midi:

I haven’t done the full math on whether the MIDI 1.0 spec really allows a total of 250,000 parameters (there are more important things atm).
Did you verify your calc against the overall midi specification?
Did you involve Aux devices and the fact that there are up to 3 units supported by TM FX?
Did you involve that there are units with more than (UFX3's) 194 I/O's?

I see it this way: at first glance, it may sound logical and reasonable. But if you think one step further and actually tried to implement it, you could no longer really call it "MIDI", because it would violate pretty much all MIDI specifications.

In essence, it would become a proprietary island protocol that might be built on top of MIDI, but ultimately would have nothing to do with MIDI standard anymore. One can probably imagine what would happen when trying to connect something like that to a DAW or Synth or whatever "non customized" controller.

It might be interesting for tinkerers, but for people who rely on solid systems and strict adherence to established standards, it would likely be a disaster.

The only thing that comes to my mind would be MIDI 2.0... but it would screw up any steamdecks etc...  I can only guess what effort it would require from RME devs. Because TotalMix is not "just" the software you see in front of you - afaik, it is also integrated into your (and every other) unit, too.

However, personally this MIDI (perhaps OSC) discussion is interesting... but seems more like feature request rather than feedback or bug report regarding the 2.0 beta, maybe it makes sense to discuss such things in the existing thread?

Beta 17 is now available in post #1. Beside two smaller bugfixes it now comes as installer which allows you to  to change between TM FX 1.99 and 2.0, back and forth, in the most convenient way. The driver is not affected, only TM FX is exchanged. Please try it!

RC 1 is up now, see first post. It fixes the gain dialog box of a right input channel which did not work.
