Topic: No output on HDSPe MADI FX after drivers update

Hi! I faced a strange behaviour of my HDSPe MADI FX today. I have 2 RME cards installed in my PC - HDSPe MADI FX and HDSPe AES. It happened so I wasn't updating my drivers since 2021. I had 2.17 for MADI card and 4.38 for AES. TotalMix was 1.74. Today I decided to update, so I installed 2.27 for MADI and 4.50 for AES. TotalMix was updated to 1.98. After that I lost any output on my MADI card. I'm getting the signal on software playback channels, there is indication, but no matter what I do with the routing and faders - I get absolutely nothing on output channels. The output indication is dead, so is the sound.
I spent a couple of hours investigating the case, totally uninstalled all RME software and managed to get the signal back only when installed back the old 2.17 MADI driver. It also brought back TotalMix 1.74. But as soon as I installed the latest AES 4.50 driver - I immediately lost the output on MADI card again. After that I understood that installing the latest AES driver also brought new TotalMix 1.98, probably the problem is with TotalMix, not the drivers. So I had to go back to both old versions. This way it works. But still, I'd like to be able to install the new software... any ideas?

P.S. The firmware is the latest on both cards

Re: No output on HDSPe MADI FX after drivers update

After installation of the latest drivers for both cards, I would upgrade to the latest TM FX version.
TM FX 1.99 x64 is available as a single file download.
If it doesn't work as expected, I would try a total reset of TM FX.
Just an idea, I don't know whether this works.

BTW, just for reference, what Windows version do you have exactly? Win 10, 11? 22H2, …?

Thanks for your reply! Didn't know that I could download TM FX separately. I can't find this download on official website, can you give a link, please? The windows 11 Pro version is the latest - I did all the updates. It's 24H2.

https://rme-audio.de/downloads/tmfx_winx64_199.zip

On the RME website on top the "Downloads" there in the "select software" dropdown menu.

Re: No output on HDSPe MADI FX after drivers update

The last news... found how to download the latest TM. The problem is definately with it. As soon as I start versions 1.98 or 1.99 - the sound disapears. I exit it and start ver. 1.73 or 1.74 (found them somewhere in system folders) - and the sound is back. Frustrating! May be I should clean something in the registry but I don't know what to clean. Reseting TM from its menu gives no results

In the Settings dialog WDM device number is not zero ? Make 1 or bigger.

Re: No output on HDSPe MADI FX after drivers update

If you talk about sound on a Windows system, then you need to be more specific about what sound you mean exactly.

Whether you mean
- audio via ASIO driver (DAW or other application with ASIO support and ASIO driver loaded) or
- audio from the OS or other applications (Firefox, …) without ASIO support that need a Windows compatible driver.

For the latter, you need to create WDM drivers in the RME driver setting window. They are created dynamically "on the fly" and are available in Windows Sound without a reboot. For details, see manual ch. 11.2.

As you have two different PCIe cards with two different drivers
- https://rme-audio.de/downloads/driver_p … in_227.zip (HDSPe MADI FX)
- https://rme-audio.de/downloads/driver_hdsp_win_450.zip (HDSPe AES)
please note:

1. You can only load one ASIO driver into an application/DAW. I would choose here the ASIO driver of your main card where your active monitors are connected. In your case, most likely the HDSPe MADI FX with the three MADI buses.

2. You need to create the WDM devices that Waedi mentioned in the driver settings dialog of this main card.
Then those WDM devices are immediately created in the Windows sound settings.
There you can make the I/O port with the monitors connected to your main Windows audio device.
Then you can play sound with the OS or any application that does not support ASIO, but supports the use of the default Windows sound device through the RME WDM driver.
See manual chapter 11.2.

Note: This card allows you to select the I/O ports for creating WDM devices individually; see manual chapter 11.2.
It is not the number of I/O ports up to the port that you need, like waedi mentioned; this is only with cards of lower I/O count.
Once you select I/O ports, change to the next TAB "Speaker" there in WDM settings (see manual ch 11.2, p. 17).
Here you should mark the port with the main monitors connected as "speaker device".
This creates the WDM driver in Windows sound with the name "Speaker.." which is then easier to find.

Furthermore, do not simply select all I/O ports for WDM! This would create too much compute load every time the computer starts, as those drivers are always created dynamically on system start from now on.

Re: No output on HDSPe MADI FX after drivers update

And disable all sound and room optimizations for wdm devices in windows  .
After update they are on by default.
The rme driver does not like that at all. Then you get no sound through wdm

Re: No output on HDSPe MADI FX after drivers update

I work with this setup for years in my studio. I run simultaneously two versions of Cubase, one using MADI card, the other using AES. When I say that there is no sound - I mean no sound from any source. ASIO and WDM. Actualy it doesn't matter - as I mentioned before the signal reaches TM - I see the indication on the software playback chanels. It is not just routed to hardware outputs. And as I said - it happenes only with newer TM versions. If I quit TM and start older version 1.74 - the routing is back on the fly. I don't even need to restart computer.

Re: No output on HDSPe MADI FX after drivers update

Is the card's firmware up to date? What's the exact version?

I can't tell the exact version right now, I'm not at the studio. But I updated the firmware before updating the drivers with the latest version available at official website. And after I faced the issue even did it once again. Didn't help.

Re: No output on HDSPe MADI FX after drivers update

Hi, I've got the same issue. Driver 2.16 works, later versions don't. I see levels at Total Mix playback but no signal at the outputs. HDSPe MADI FX latest firmware, Windows 11.

Re: No output on HDSPe MADI FX after drivers update

Which outputs are affected, what's the card connected to? Can you loop the MADI signal back to the card's own input for a test?

You are on firmware 91/92, right? That means you use a MADI FX revision 1 which does not support Room EQ. That might explain why older TM FX versions work, later ones not. Room EQ was added in TM FX 1.94, so if this theory is right versions up to 1.93 should still work.

Could you try 2.0 beta 17? This issue might be fixed in there already:

Re: No output on HDSPe MADI FX after drivers update

My theory seems to be wrong, we just tested with a 1.0 card and TM FX 1.99 (from current driver 2.40) and it works. That would match no other feedback of such a gross issue. There must be something very specific that makes it not working for you. To find that we need more info and your help. First: the not working one, TM FX Help - Device Info: what does it say?
