Topic: babyface original no sound in headphone

hello i bought a babyface original a weeks ago.
It worked fine until today  : i can't hear the sound in the headphones anymore neither in recording and playback.  I get the sound in AN1/2 but i can't route it to  the headphones.  Another problem is that when i click on a channel in Totalmix  it doesn't highlight itself.
i spent many hours on the manual watched tutorials without success
I tried many combinations of assignement but no sound in headphones
Thanks for your help

Re: babyface original no sound in headphone

Hello Lobe67
Welcome to the user forum.

Does Totalmix show a real serial number (not 12345678) top right ?

What version of Totalmix is this ?

Make sure the device is not in CC-mode.
Press and hold the two buttons SELECT and RECALL during powering up the Babyface does flip CC-mode / normal-mode.

Try a Total Reset in Totalmix
menu Options / Reset mix / Total Reset

You have to click on a hardware output channel, those get highlighted.
Only bottom row is outputs, click on middle row or top row does nothing.

Sorry, this doesn't explain submix mode or how to validate a routing/submix; therefore, it might be confusing for him.

After a total reset of TotalMix FX, like explained above, it is useful to provide
A) a basic setup / routing and
B) to inspect/adjust the routing of your monitoring outputs (monitors, phones).

For everything mentioned below, keep in mind, that every hardware output has an individual routing.

to A) Here's a quick basic setup

1. Options -> Reset Mix -> Total Reset
2. Click "Assign Button" to assign
    - HW Output AN1/2 to "Main Out"
    - HW Output Ph3/4 to "Phones 1"
3. Options -> Reset Mix -> Straight Playback with all to Main Out
4. Store this routing to Snapshot 1 and rename it to "Monitors 1"
5. Resize and position your TM FX window on screen to your liking and store this to a Workspace
    File -> Save Workspace As
The workspace includes not only the TM FX routing but also the size and position of the TM FX window on your screen.
6. Additionally store this to the first of 30 so called Workspace Quick Select slots.
    File -> Workspace Quick Select
The purpose of this is that you can now quickly restore Workspace Quick Select Slots 1..9
by the key combination ALT-n (n=1..9), for Apple this is the Option key on the Apple keyboard

By point 5+6 you can now at any time come back to exectly these settings by either loading the workspace from disk
or by simply pressing ALT-1 (in this case).
You need to repeat step 5+6 whenever you are making changes to the routing or channel description or if you resize or reposition your TM FX window.

Now TM FX is reset and a standard routing (all sw playback channels = audio from PC) is provided to "Main Out" (HW Output AN 1/2).

to B) check / inspect the routing for a selected HW output/submix

Play some music for a test. You should see audio arriving in the middle row, most likely on SW playback AN 1/2.

Check that submix mode is enabled (usually the default routing mode of TM FX).
You find it in the light blue area on the top right side of TM FX window.
Validate that under Routing Mode "submix" is selected (lit), not the routing mode "free".

1. Select the HW Output "Main Out" (AN 1/2) in the TotalMix FX control room.
Note: you see now AN1/2 at the bottom of each fader in top/middle row to indicate this is the routing for submix AN1/2.

2. Check the routing by inspecting the fader position of Top Row (HW inputs) and Middle Row (SW Playbacks, audio from PC)

3. It's helpful to press/toggle the button "sub" on the right side under "Layout Presets".
With "Sub" activated you only see those channels from the top/middle row that route audio into the selected HW output.

Re: babyface original no sound in headphone

Hello thanks a lot
i followed the instructions ( total reset + routing +straight playback to main mix)) but the choice  proposed are inverted : "main out> AN1/2" and "phones1 > PH/4...
But still no sound in headphones
Then I i don't see how the activate the Submix mode in the blue region in TM : the blue region only contains "level meters" and "show" options
Last thing the channels don't highlight when i click on them( because i'm not in submix mode?)
( i 'm very stressed because i have a recording tomorrow where i need to be able to hear a track and record )

Laurent
ps: firmware version is 1.99

Re: babyface original no sound in headphone

Firmware should be 226
You should perform a firmware update.
as you could read out the firmware number I expect the driver is working and a firmware update will work.

Download the FUT and run it

1.99 ist the TM FX version, not the firmware.

Post a screenshot of your headphones submix.

I think the highlighting of a submix is a new feature of TM FX 2.0, you have 1.99.

You do not need the highlighting
- you know where you clicked to
- you see it at the base of each fader of top/middle row, which submix is selected like e.g. AN1/2 or AN2/4.

You are in the wrong TotalMix FX operational mode.

Do not use "DAW mode", use "Full mode" instead (which is the default).

See Options -> Operational Mode

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/35pzexa8lqpq7tturxghj/2026-04-19-TM-FX-operational-mode.jpg?rlkey=pfmgwdqcvyzhc8pedn513xffr&st=o4k6ud19&dl=1

In DAW mode you have no middle row (SW playbacks) and are very limited in terms of direct routing of flows on the card in near realtime. Then every audio flow has to be routed through the DAW. And this adds much more latency over USB, the higher your buffers the higher your latency. This is much more compared to converter latency alone.

No wonder that nothing worked. Then also audio to the headphones needs to be routed through the DAW.

Please use the normal operation mode "Full Mode".

No, audio signal and sync is by the same toslink optical cable.

One cable is one way sending or receive.

It depends, which device is clock master.

If Steinberg, you need connect (at least) Steinberg ADAT/SPDIF out to Babyface ADAT/SPDIF in.

If Babyface, you need to connect (at least) Babyface ADAT/SPDIF out to Steinberg ADAT/SPDIF in. (In your case, as you also want to get signal from Steinberg Steinberg ADAT/SPDIF out to Babyface ADAT/SPDIF in needs do be connected.)

Re: babyface original no sound in headphone

i tried both , neither works. Babyface and steinberg  are set to adat of course and both at 44KHz...for the steinberg i followed those instructions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xiqw9ihuQpw)...I put a mic on input 3  of steinberg that should come out in adat3.. But no signal is seen on the babyface..The only sign is that the adat channels appear in tM

Re: babyface original no sound in headphone

I think you misunderstand something.

Do not make both equal.

Make Babyface clock-mode external adat.

Make Steinberg clock-mode internal 44,1 kHz.

connect toslink cable from steinberg Adat out to Babyface Adat in.

You can see the signal in Totalmix ? Then it works.
The signal is not visible on the Babyface you have to use Totalmix to route the signal to desired outputs.

You need to change dl=0 to dl=1 in the URL if you use img tags, so that the picture is shown directly.
Otherwise it is not even clickable.

Or the cable is defective ... at the end he needed to check.

Now he might only have a routing problem on the Steinberg recording interface, that no channels are being routed to ADAT.

Re: babyface original no sound in headphone

I see no metering in the ADAT inputs 1-8 under HW inputs, top row.
Are you sure that you are sending audio from the Steinberg interface through ADAT?

The setup is

UCX II [cs]---ADAT IN---------ADAT OUT---Steinberg MR816 [cm]

cm=clock master (clock source internal)
cs=clock slave (clock source ADAT IN)

On the MR816 you need to route audio to its ADAT outputs (1-8).
otherwise you can not see metering at the UCX II under HW Input ADAT 1-8 IN.

What is your audio source in the setup .. is audio playing .. ?

Hello
Something strange  is happening since yesterday  ( hopefully after my recording session) : my left in channelis much weaker than my right although i have the same gain. Left channel ( number) is barely audible. I tried different  level of gain ( same for 1 and 2 ) with same mic but the difference is always important https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/0tyil08r8kh7bfpp7wk86/Capture-d-cran-2026-04-28-23.45.51.png?rlkey=jgam680ku6m2wp7ezbdrpzii6&st=8w4fssw9&dl=1

The input channel 2 has shared input connector XLR or jack
if one use the jack input with a guitar make inst button ON.

In your case it is nothing to care about as it is OFF.

Your input signal should be the same when both mics are equal in good shape.

If you flip the mic cables will the low signal also flip ? if so, mic or cable has issue.

If the low signal stays with the XLR input this could be an issue with the hardware mic-preamp
The first screenshot from the recording looks indeed like defect input mic-preamp.

Please make some tests, screenshot of the two input signals in Totalmix would be nice

i used the same mic switching physically from channel 1  to channel 2 ..
I suspect that there is an issue with phantom powering , i'll try a dynamic mic tonight

Yes, it could be phantom power problem. I guess BF Blue uses breakout cable, does not it? So, it could possibly be a problem with this cable.
