Topic: Digiface Ravenna Standalone MADI-Ravenna conversion

I have a Digiface Ravenna and want to use it as standalone conversion from MADI to Ravenna. The manual states that this is possible when just powering it, but I’m having issues getting it to work.

I plugged in my USB to verify that the RME was receiving signal via MADI, and also used Totalmix to send audio via Ravenna to the receiving device (a Merging Hapi). Those tests were all successful. However when I unplug the USB, including when powered up from off without the USB, signal doesn’t flow. Is there a setting somewhere to get it to work? Perhaps a specific channel assignment?

When the USB is attached I verified that the BNC is set to MADI, and in standalone mode everything looks right on the Ravenna side, with valid streams appearing at the Hapi, just no signal. Anyone have any ideas?

I received your email and I forwarded it, waiting for a reply. Unfortunately, I personally don't have a DF Ravenna at my disposal. Did you also test signal flow the other way round?

Thanks!  I did not try the other direction; I can attempt that and see what happens. Will update.

We have tested it with Directout Prodigy and it's working both ways in standalone. But you need to configure and activate the Ravenna module acordingly in the DF Ravenna.

What does this mean and how is it done? Running the DirectOut web config?

Page 8 user manual :

Stand-alone Operation
The Digiface Ravenna can be used stand-alone, powered by the included power supply. Alterna-
tively USB bus power from a USB power wall wart or USB battery can be used. When not con-
nected to a computer host the device operates as 64 channel MADI to/from RAVENNA con-
verter. All channels are transferred to the other format unchanged, both ways.

To make most use of the additional phones output, a submix of all MADI and RAVENNA input
channels can be set up in computer-connected operation, and stored in the Digiface Ravenna for
stand-alone operation. To store the current Submix Phones go to TotalMix FX Options, Store
current State into Device -> Submix Phones and Settings.

Obviously. This is a network device that is connected to a network and must be controlled from there.

Re: Digiface Ravenna Standalone MADI-Ravenna conversion

It would be helpful if RME/Direct-Out could create some simple examples of some common config of the stand-alone operation, in particular. Something like, one PC for management interface, one ravenna interface, stand alone operation of Digiface Ravenna.

The network setup for the RAV.IO module is not trivial and the documentation from DO also lacks any examples that would help significantly. The switch operation is confusing, as it is not a "normal" switch, the ports are separate NIC's with different subnets required.

I can get audio routing with an additional switch, but cannot without this, as I can't seem to successfully setup IP addresses for the management interface and for the Ravenna devices, not to mention setting master slave PTP clocks, that works. Thank goodness for the third party Merging Aneman to assist with setup. I am yet to try Globcon, plan to try this next.

I also cannot find any support endpoints from DO for questions.
