I have just encountered issues with Mackie Control mode in TotalMix FX when using a Behringer BCF2000 as the controller. The communication has become one‑way: the BCF2000 receives messages from TotalMix FX, but nothing is sent back to TotalMix FX.

If I select the Behringer X‑Touch as the Mackie Controller in TotalMix FX, everything works correctly.

I tested the BCF2000 in the system using MIDI‑OX, and I also checked it as a Mackie Control surface in Fender Studio Pro — in both cases it works without any problems. The issue appears only in TotalMix FX.

The problem started today, immediately after a Windows Update that introduced Windows MIDI Services with MIDI 2.0 support. Since then, TotalMix FX seems unable to receive MIDI from the BCF2000, while other software still can.

If RME is still using the legacy HMIDIOUT / HMIDIIN ports, my testing shows that with Windows MIDI Services HMIDIIN stops recieving data after a sysEx message is sent through HMIDIOUT.  That would explain what you are seeing because sysEx messages are used for the Mackie protocol challenge/response system.

The modern IMidiInPort / IMidiOutPort implementation is unaffected.

I have a feeling that no one at RME is going to see these posts because they are on page 8 of a thread that is already 6 months old.

Microsoft has already acknowledged that some of the legacy‑API issues stem from timing differences between the old and new stacks. Their own statement puts it this way:

“Some apps are relying on the slow speed of the old API and are allocating SysEx buffers after they are needed. This worked in the slower API, but not in the new one. We have some retry logic in place in an upcoming update to help work around this problematic code.”

More details are in their official write‑up:
https://devblogs.microsoft.com/windows- … rkarounds/

To rule out device‑side problems, I tested the Behringer BCF in every configuration I could:

  • USB‑MIDI with the Behringer driver

  • USB‑MIDI using the standard Windows class‑compliant driver

  • Traditional DIN‑5 MIDI, connected to the UCX II MIDI ports

In every single case, the behavior is identical.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for Windows (now released)

The interface looks great for me.
2160x1440 27" monitor set to 120 Hz(G-Sync only on fullscreen up to 144Hz) monitor and 125% system scale running off an RTX 4070. Fireface UC rev127. Windows 11 Pro 24H2.

The Windows 11 midi problem persists.
Disable Midi control in Options / Enable Midi Control , then re-enable it and you're fine if you only send in midi notes to recall setup slots. One extra step after system boot until things are fixed.

Nice job on the interface. The high contrast mode is a little quicker for someone like me who only briefly looks at this interface day to day. I mostly switch setups and turn the outputs up or down on the interface itself.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for Windows (now released)

I do miss the old scale option with key control 'z' to switch between 100% and 200%.
Also scale levels 150%, 250% and 300% can be usefull for 4k and 8k screens.
It would be great to have those options.

I would guess that the TM FX scaling is related to the current screen resolution.

This could be either the "native" resolution of the monitor or the current scale used for the Windows Desktop.

If you scale your Windows Desktop to lets say 130% this is your new "100%" in terms of TM FX scaling.

I could be wrong on that; I never thought about it, but I think this is the way it works.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for Windows (now released)

I uploaded the latest version 1.991 and 2.0 RC2, see links in first post. Version 1.99 got all the fixes and partly improvements of 2.0, so is now v1.991 and might be the last bitmap version. We plan to freeze it in its current state and continue further development only with v 2.0.

These are the changes:

V 1.991, based on V2.0 RC 1
Bug fix for matrix display in DAW mode with Speaker B

UCX II: Phones Ref Level option removed from the right channel

ARC USB: Durec Prev/Next were swapped

ARC USB: Gain adjustment range for channels 11 and 12 corrected for UFX+ / II / III

Record/Play can now optionally be saved/loaded in a Snapshot. The change detection has also been adjusted accordingly.

New option to suppress volume spikes when switching certain Snapshots

V 1.991 and v2.0 RC 2, new

Make sure that Talk and Listenback channels always remain mono

Submix (aka fader position) is not loaded from the Talkback channel when a Snapshot is loaded

Room EQ option via Snapshot: now also includes the Volume Correction and Delay values

Layout, Submix-only option: show correct channels when routing is changed, e.g., by loading a Snapshot

Added support for DirectOut’s USB.MADI SFP module

Compatibility fix for ARC USB and others (BCF2000...) for Windows 11 MIDI 2.0*

Added workaround for delayed accessibility after plug-in of the ARC USB*

Note: This fix and workaround do not change the new MIDI 2.0 issue of Windows 11 sometimes not sending information of newly added MIDI devices to an already running app (TM FX…). We expect this to work again with the upcoming MIDI fixes from MS.

V 2.0 RC 2 only
Talkback label fixed (special talkback symbol was missing)

Double-click in Channel Layout table works again

Have fun!

The new installer is great; it saves a lot of time for switching between the two versions.
Also, many thanks for porting a few things back to 1.99.

EDIT: I only had a little issue that appears to be local on my system.
I couldn't find my workspaces in "Quick Workspace Select".
After some testing, it turns out that this could be solved by a restart of TotalMix FX.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for Windows (now released)

Hi everyone,

I’ve been using the RME Fireface UCX II for quite a while now and I’m still on TotalMix FX version 1.97 (2), which has been working great for me so far.

That said, I’d love to have some kind of UI scaling for example, being able to see the full names of my snapshots.

Is this possible in the new TotalMix FX 2.0 beta?

And if so, can I just install the 2.0 beta over my current version, or is it better to uninstall the old one first?

Thanks in advance!

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for Windows (now released)

You can zoom in but the names go bigger as well it stays the same. If your snapshot name is too long for visibility, zooming in will not help you out.
I'm on Mac but I expect the same behavior on windows.

Just install.

Unfortunately it is like waedi said, the whole area to the right is not scaling at all (yet?). The rest was looking great until it went to Release candidate. Now the installer just fails with "The install operation did fail".

Before that it was possible to install both in parallel - at least on Windows. They even shared the same config. But do not try to start both at the same time smile

Under Windows, this has been possible for a very long time; I would say since the first 2.x release.

You need to move the mouse to the right area, hold the control key and scroll with the mouse wheel to zoom in/out.
Same as with the left part of TM FX with the channels.

I noticed that the window height increases randomly by a few pixels every time after a restart. To capture this change, I backed up a copy of "last.BabyfacePro1.xml". After several restarts, I found that the "WinPos.bottom" parameter has increased:

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for Windows (now released)

Regarding the scaling, it would be nice to have the ctrl+scroll function active in the RoomEQ window as well. Some recent change made the REQ window very small and unable to scale up when simply making the window larger, on the biggest size the font size and knob size isnt consistent with what I have in the main window:
https://i.ibb.co/CpLysMsx/image.png
also, when I move the REQ window onto a screen that has different system scaling (window spawned on 150% scaling monitor, moved it to 100% scaling monitor), it suddenly looks quite aliased:

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for Windows (now released)

Thanks for the reply.  It's my understanding that Microsoft has already 'fixed' the sysex issues.  No other applications I use stops receiving midi input after a sysex is sent.  I will post an issue on their GitHub page.

I posted a bug report here.
https://github.com/microsoft/MIDI/issue … 4159209440

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for Windows (now released)

I was able to the get the legacy API working properly with the help of Microsoft developers.  The problem was resolved by pre allocating input buffers.  There are details in the link I posted above.  If TotalMix is not preallocating buffers, that would explain the behavior me and others are seeing.

Update:
Here's the key important information:
https://github.com/microsoft/MIDI/issue … 4160186872

With the old driver you could get way with not pre-allocating sysex buffers, but not with the new one.  Maybe examples incorrectly show allocating buffers in the MidiInProc.

And in the case that you are already pre-allocating buffers, but only a very small buffer, you might consider increasing the size.  My MIDI Expression / eDRUMin devices transmit sysex messages that are up to 81 bytes long.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for Windows (now released)

I have just tested 2.0 RC2 and the change from bitmap is not that great for my display situation. I have 2048x1152 resolution, 100% in Windows 10. In TM with 100% the text like "stereo" or "phase" is hard to read and looks not great either. Even with TM in maximized Window, the text looks too small for my eyes. When I reduce the size of the TM Window the text gets so tiny that it looks even blurred. In general all text / labels are not large enough to create a pleasant look. Switching to old mode for the time being. Hope it can be addressed in some way. There is plenty of space in my option to increase the (vector) fonts/text labels.

Thank-you for taking the effort to try an resolved the issue. Something is still not right.  Things lock up after my device sends 5 sysex messages (each of which is 15 bytes long). In my testing, I was sending them one at a time with 1 second in between. You are pre-allocating beffers? After you receive a sysex, you are recycling your buffer and pushing it back to the input?

lpMidiHdr->dwBytesRecorded = 0;
midiInAddBuffer(hmi, lpMidiHdr, sizeof(MIDIHDR));

As always, the locked state can be fixed by toggling the "Enable MIDI Control", which I assume closes and reopens the port. I would be happy to send you a device to test with.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for Windows (now released)

We have done extensive testing and flooded TM FX with SysEX while using BCF2000 and ARC USB- works. So the issue here might be your device or the specific SysEx that you sent.

That said we have to stop here - this is about releasing v 2.0 and we can no longer take such small, isolated issues into account. They can be worked on later again.

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for Windows (now released)

The presets are 100%, 135%, 200%, and 270%. The jump between 13%% and 200% is large and I often want an intermediate size. Now that vector rendering allows any scale factor, why not allow users to specify any value from 75% to 300%? A silder with a numeric picker would be most flexible; also a setting for 100% height (fit to vertical dimension).

Re: TotalMix FX 2.0 – first beta available for Windows (now released)

The beta has large letter "C" shown prominantly as a button for each channel strip. These widgets take a lot of space, but it seems their only purpose is to show panning. That is when I realized there are no tooltips to help the user understand what widgets are for. Tooltips would be helpful.

To show panning, a widget that does not resemble a button should be used, and it should have a landscape orientation (wide but short). The channel strips would be shorter if the panning indicator was shorter.

One problem I had with the previous TotalMixes (non-beta): no icon for launching the program was provided in Windows Start. I would have to burrow into C:\Windows\System32 to find it. After updating to the beta, that version is now gone, but "C:\Windows\System32\TotalMixFX.chm" remains. The beta now lives in "C:\Program Files\RME\MADIface\TotalMixFX_x64.exe". It does not appear in the Start menu, althought right-clicking on the program said that it should be. After toggling that, the icon appears on the Start menu. However, the next time I opened the Start menu it was gone. I tried again, and moved it to a group in the start menu, and it remained visible. So there is a problem with the start menu.

Overtall, the beta is a big improvement, which would be even better with additional polishing.

EDIT:

Update and Good News.

Following mslinn’s report, I decided to try TM Remote again after a few months, and suddenly it wasn’t working for me either.

After some extensive troubleshooting, I’m pleased to confirm that this is not related to TotalMix FX 2.0 (or any driver versions). It was a local problem of my Windows installation.

EDIT2: Issue identified and solved.

A couple of months ago I decided to use Jumbo Frames (MTU of 9000) for making my network backup more efficient, and this caused the issue. After setting the MTU of my 10 Gbit network adapter back to the default value - MTU of 1500 - everything works perfectly.

I have deleted my subsequent posts containing troubleshooting information, as they are no longer relevant to this thread on TM FX 2.0.

Many thanks to Martin and RME for troubleshooting and finding this out using my sniffer traces.

This is shown for about 6 seconds, then "(offline)" vanishes for about half a second, and so forth.

Toggle "offline" indicates UDP connection issue. UDP Port 7009 might be already bound by some MADI FXs' OSC connection?
The Remote Apps' MADI FX will probably not send its fader changes to the TM too (will be reset after a few secs).
Access rights settings might differ across each device in TM, too. Assure on your TM host that M$ Defender accepts all local IN/OUT traffic for TCP and UDP. Or sth is weird with your config...
Finally, this sounds more like an issue on network layer, rather than an application issue.

However - here, at least two units with its faders and level meters work.

- Fixed the submix selection limit for UFX+ / UFX III in Double and Quad speed modes for MIDI

- The Dynamics plot graphic now updates even when parameters are adjusted via OSC

- Added Gain adjustment via dialog box for stereo (maximum from both channels)

- Gain Dialogs include checking for invalid ranges (e.g., UFX III 1–7 dB)
