What's additionally helpful is to use Workspace Quick Select. 30 slots where you can quickly store and recall workspaces.
Recalling the first 9 of 30 goes very easily and quickly using a key combination
Windows: ALT-1 .. ALT-9
macOS: Option-1 .. Option-9
No matter what I do or test for others ... ALT-1 and I have my standard workspace settings back:
routing, volume levels, TM FX window size and position.
I recommend saving the workspaces both ways
a) TM FX: File -> Save Workspace As...
Saving different versions of workspaces to a folder on your disk, which is part of your backup
For me, this is an incremental process to refine my workspace; currently, I am at number 062
U:\username\Eigene Dokumente\RME\TotalMix
- HDSPe MADI FX v062 TM201 less colors, little taller.tmws
- HDSPe MADI FX v061 TM201 less colors.tmws
...
- HDSPe MADI FX v010 std-mix ready.tmws
- HDSPe MADI FX v009 submix cleanup, muted outputs, routing 4 pcms.tmws
...
b) TM FX: File -> Workspace Quick Select... (W)
Saving the Workspace to different Workspace Quick Select (WQS) Slots:
#1 - HDSPe MADI FX v062 TM201 less colors, little taller
#2 - HDSPe MADI FX v062 TM201 less colors, little taller (backup)
#3 - HDSPe MADI FX v062 TM201 more colors, little taller
#4 - HDSPe MADI FX v062 TM201 no colors, little taller
Those files reside at fixed locations in your user profile; I can talk only about Windows, with macOS it might be similar:
C:\Users\<your-login-name>\AppData\Local\TotalMixFX
preset1.tmws, preset2.tmws, ...
Backup
Some comments that are Windows-related (macOS might be different):
to a) Workspaces that you save on disk might reside on a different partition or even different SSD, so they will perhaps be saved along with your "user data" backup.
to b) WQS resides in the user profile and will most likely be saved as part of your system-backup.
