Topic: MADI configuration with redundancy

Hello,

My current setup for location recording over MADI is:

Laptop (Windows) -- UFX+ <---  XTC <--- 12mic
                                  ------------------------->

Would it make sense to introduce a Madiface USB into the MADI ring for redundancy?


                                               Laptop
                                                     |
Laptop (Windows) -- UFX+  <---  Madiface usb <--- XTC <--- 12mic
                                  ---------------------------------------------->


I thought of another possible option with AVB (Which forces to run another cable from stage):

                                  -------------------------->
Laptop (Windows) -- UFX+  <---  12mic <--- XTC
Mac computer <------------AVB ------|                       


What do you think?

Regarding MADI setup

I think this won't bring an advantage, because it won't be a perfect redundancy.
As far as I read from RME, then a damaged MADI port, here of the MADIface USB,
wouldn't automatically bypass all MADI channels to the UFX III.
There is from what I remember no "open or bypass on fail".

For redundancy in terms of "if the DAW sucks" you better use DURec on the UFX+.

What this setup will bring to you is the possibility to record with two different PCs/DAWs. But no real redundancy.

@RME: could you kindly check / confirm my suspicion, I am not 100% certain on this, thanks.

Perhaps you're right, but I see that when redundancy is discussed in these scenarios, it usually refers more to having another computer or recording system, as the part most prone to failure.

I already use Durec regularly, and it's very useful as a backup system, but post-production work takes longer without a computer in this case.

For the forwarding of MADI frames through this additional device it will most likely only take the usual 3 samples delay at single speed like with other MADI devices serially chained.

I have found that the best option (cheap), is a pasive optical splitter, to avoid interrupting the recording and having to rewire. But I don't know why but I find a lot of singlemode splitters but no multimode.
