Topic: UFX+ blue blinking host LED with USB3 sharing switch

Hello,

I have a setup where I need to intermittently use a Fireface UFX+ (latest FW) on two computers (Windows 11, latest RME drivers).
As both machines are located at different places, a full KVM switch is not required and I got an Ugreen CM662 USB3.0 sharing switch with only the UFX+ (and optionally power supply) connected to it.

But the UFX+ is not recognized by any computer connected to the switch and the host LED is blinking/flashing blue.
Changing cables did not do the trick.
However, when using a USB 2.0 cable, the host LED is steady orange and the device works without required MADI (as expected in USB2 mode).

I first blamed the USB sharing switch, but: a MadifaceXT is working in USB3 mode without any issues. So, I suspect that it is not (only) an issue of the Ugreen USB switch.

Could it be a UFX+ HW issue? Or is is USB3 HW/FW very different between UFX+ and MadifaceXT, giving latter more robustness?
I had some reports about a blinking host LED from other people using the UFX+ (without the switch) once in a while, especially if not directly connected to the host, but via USB hub.

Thank you very much for any hints or information

Re: UFX+ blue blinking host LED with USB3 sharing switch

I remember that sometimes changing the usb mode of the UFX helps. So force it USB3 if on auto or the other way round. Of course might not help...

Re: UFX+ blue blinking host LED with USB3 sharing switch

Thanks for the hint, but unfortunately it doesn't help.

  • Was set to auto before.

  • USB 3 mode still has blinking host LED and no connection.

  • USB 2 mode has working USB 2 connection.

But direct connection works fine?

Yes.
Somebody told me he once had a similar issue, but I could not reproduce it so far.

How long is the total cable run?

I wonder if you could get it working with 2 shorter cables, or fiberoptic cables if you need the length. May even be that high quality cables in general could help.

That being said, it's generally not recommended to use a switch with RME USB interfaces.

Cables were my first concern and I tested different short high quality cables (PC → 1m → switch → 1m → UFX+).

I can get that but it would have been so nice, especially as it is working flawlessly with the MadifaceXT even with longer cables (PC → 4m → switch → 2m) MadifaceXT.

Re: UFX+ blue blinking host LED with USB3 sharing switch

If I may share my experience...
I have an "cheap" Ugreen 2-to-4 USB3 port here too. Another model, but basically similar then your CM662.
Well, what I can say, this box is so bad soldered and far away from a professional kvm switch at all. Especially for audio stuff.
In fact, although ugreen advertises it as "SuperSpeed USB3" capable - it never worked with the UFX3 here.
Same with USB3 ssd drives - they have very slow R/W rates...
However, its usable with 802 (USB2), but only if NOT all 4 ports are used at same time...

So, @viper - putting 1 and 1 together, as you already said in #5: It works with direct connection...
The ugreen box itself is the culprit. Not any cables or sth else.
I would even bet: MadifaceXT will "fail" via this box too, if you feed all its 394 channels and use the full USB3 bandwidth...

Hi maggie33,

thank you very much for sharing your experience.
I'll try to find a workaround solution.

Would you mind sharing the excact Ugreen model number you tested, if you can remenber?
