Topic: RME Fireface UFX III -> Neve 1073 DPA -> ADI-2 Pro (1st gen)

Hi everyone, I am writing for help in configuring my mastering and monitoring chain using a Fireface UFX III, a 1st gen. ADI-2 Pro and a Neve 1073 DPA.

My current hardware wiring is as follows:

Clock: UFX III Master (Internal), ADI-2 Pro is slave (via AES)
Digital Connection: UFX III and ADI-2 Pro are linked bi-directionally via AES/EBU (In/Out)
Outboard Loop:UFX III Analog Out 3-4 -> Neve 1073 Line Input
Neve 1073 Line Output -> ADI-2 Pro Analog In (XLR combo).

I want to use the ADI-2 Pro high-end AD converters for the Neve return, send that digital signal back to the UFX III via AES, and monitor the chain using the headphones output on the ADI-2 Pro. Is this possible cause I'm literally going crazy and can't find a solution... whatever option I try I end up hearing back only the DAW output but not the Neve return? This unless I connect the headphones to the UFX which kinda better but still giving me headaches to configure the routing.

I would highly appreciate your help regarding three specific questions:

ADI-2 Pro Device Mode: Which mode should I set on the first-generation ADI-2 Pro for this specific setup? Should I use AD/DA, DAC, or Preamp mode to properly route the Analog In to AES Out while keeping the headphone outputs active?

Logic Pro I/O Plugin: Is it recommended to use Logic's native I/O Plugin on the Master Bus to send the signal to the Neve and print it back, or is it better to avoid it and handle the routing differently (e.g., separating the Stereo Out from the recording track)?

Logic Pro Outputs: How should I set the output routing in Logic? Should the main output go to Analog 1/2 (and then routed via TotalMix FX) or should it be assigned directly to the AES output (Channels 13/14 on the UFX III)?

Any help would be much appreciated!
Antzuo

Re: RME Fireface UFX III -> Neve 1073 DPA -> ADI-2 Pro (1st gen)

The Logic I/O plugin is good or you use different tracks and set the I/O per track, both is the same result, myself prefers without the I/O plugin.
Anyway you have to keep control over the routing.

Logic output 1/2 or any other number, it is the same for Totalmix, you will route from software playback channels to the hardware outputs manually.

If you ask me, I would take the ADI-2 out of the chain and work with the UFX lll only.
All difficulties with routing are sorted out then.

Sorry, but which difficulties?!

All that he needs to do is to

1. Choose ADI-2 Pro's proper mode

2. To route audio to outboard equipment/neve through UFX III HW output AN 3/4
If all settings are all he should see audio from Neve at UFX III AES IN

         +---AES IN<-----------------------------------------AES OUT---+
       /                                                                                          \
UFX III [cm]---AES OUT------------------------------------->AES IN---ADI-2 Pro---AN1/2---active monitors
              \                                                                                  /AN IN    \---AN3/4---headphones
               \---AN3/4 OUT---------->AN IN---Neve 1073---AN OUT--+

3. Either record this processed audio from Neve (UFX III AES IN) with your DAW or route it further to whatever output you like.

Re: RME Fireface UFX III -> Neve 1073 DPA -> ADI-2 Pro (1st gen)

If you’re running Logic you’re on Mac.

Mac offers the option to connect both UFX III AND ADI-2 Pro with USB and create an “Aggregate Device”, see manual chapter 27.3.
This gives Logic free direct access to all ADI-2 I/O’s.

ADI-2 Pro should run in Class Compliant Multitrack USB Mode for this.
ADI-2 would not route through TotalMix.

Are you sure that this would be beneficial?

I would prefer to control with TM FX, what is being routed to the ADI-2 Pro FS for monitoring purposes.
The AD conversion of the Neve output through the analog input of the ADI-2 Pro is an easy task; see above.

As an aggregate device, the ADI-2 Pro is kind of isolated (from UFX III / TM FX) and, IMHO, less useful
compared to connecting it through UFX III.
Then you will always have the latency over USB to reach the ADI-2 Pro
instead of being able to perform direct routing on the UFX III in Near-Realtime (for monitoring through the ADI-2 Pro).
