Topic: User names for routing??

I know this has been asked before, but the threads i read all ended with no resolution.

I am using Free Routing Mode to do insert fx chains (Madiface USB+Babyface mk1+Ferrofish+Cranborne 500adat).

I have named all my channels, but the drop down output list under each channel still uses "1/2" nomenclature.

So when i want to set up a chain I have to count or remember the channels that my hardware is going to. Which appears to defeat the point of naming the channels.

Is there an option to change it to user names in the routing drop down list? If not, can we get one?

I have up to 64 channels, with 24 channels of outboard processing atm. I just want to send to named devices and not have to remember what number channels they are on.

Re: User names for routing??

It's no secret many find TotalMix  confusing. I think adding this feature would go a long way to helping people overcome their confusion with Totalmix. I see no reason why we can name i/o channels but not have those names available when routing.

Any RME staff kindly care to respond?

Thanks in advance.

Re: User names for routing??

Proposal: simply route in submix mode, based on a per HW output routing perspective.
It's even more exact as you can clearly see the submix of that particular output.

Thanks for the suggestion ramses. I'll try and get used to submix mode. I just found that free mode enabled me a clearer way to see and create the chain from the inputs row, with the exception of the aforementioned "numbers" rather than named outputs.

I have been considering patching all of my hardware I/O to/ from my outboard into the respective converters as well and using Totalmix as a patchbay. I am not at my studio at the moment but this confuses me. Does this imply that if you use submix mode, the named output channels will appear under the playback and input channels and the names of the input channels will appear under the output channels if I want to send a playback signal to a processor and then return it to an input channel from the output of the processor? I would be sending 56 analog outputs from outboard processors into AD converters and returning an additional 56 from my DA converters to my analog inputs in different configurations by creating different workspaces and snapshots. Without being able to see names in the drop downs rather than numbers, I think it would be extremely tedious. I’m perhaps misunderstanding something?

Better wait until you are in the studio and take a look.

Re: User names for routing??

There really needs to be an option for this under "View Options".

I have to keep a piece of paper with the hardware/channel relationships at the console to reference the Name instead of Channel every time I want to change the send gain to a specific external hardware effect for a specific channel. It would make using TotalMix so much more intuitive.

Re: User names for routing??

Dear RME, it's been a while.

Would it really hurt to add the user names in the drop down?

This is the workflow :
need the number, click names, remember the number, forget the number.  Again and again, for any channel.
Instead of just using the drop down with the names in it. Absurd.

Re: User names for routing??

Where is this drop-down ?
In Totalmix ? In your DAW ?

Read the thread from the beginning, then it is obvious..

Re: User names for routing??

Bumping this thread. Is there a way to do this now? I captured some screenshots to illustrate the problem.

Here you can see I named channels 33-64 to align with the 16 stereo inputs on my h9000:

When I want to select the fader for these outputs, I only see the channel numbers:

Routing would be much simpler if the user names could be in the drop down, even if they were included with the numbers like "63/64 - h9k 16".

bumping this again. any chance we can get this in 2.0?

Also, please consider allowing longer user defined names — 11 characters is quite limiting.
If necessary, truncate names, but show the full name in a tooltip when hovering with the mouse over the field for a moment, maybe with a configurable delay between approx 500 - 3000 ms.

Re: User names for routing??

As the channel names are synced with the units (and their lcd displays), they offer max 11 chars at all.
For me personally, this maybe needs a few seconds to define short but clear namings in tm - but avoids unclear situations where i use the lcd navigation only.

Hmm, where? I just looked at the UFX III display and pushed Chan/Mix.
The names there in the green field are "standard", no user-defined names, and seem to allow more than 11 characters.
For example, in the green field, "Mic/Instrument 12": these are 17 chars, and there is still some room to the left and to the right.

Approximately 23 characters seem possible, and regarding the display, the rest could be truncated.
In the TM FX software, you could use "balloon tips" as I mentioned above.

The ideal solution would be to have one smaller and one longer field that fits devices/displays and one longer for TotalMix
which also needs to fit for the free routing mode.

The "Names" field should also toggle the view of free routing mode, standard names, or user-defined names.

P.S.: I am 99.9% working in TM FX. Is there an option that I overlooked to make user-defined names visible in the device's display?

"user-defined names" in TM appear as "Tr. Name" on the LCD.

Looks like...

Thats what i meant:

Press Encoder 2 a few times (or hold it pressed) to navigate further down...
Et Voila:

Btw, (WARNING: This is just my personal dangerous-half-knowledge):
Sure, there is more space possible than 11 chars in Tr. Name on LCD.
22 chars would "eat" 1 full byte (instead of a half) of each unit's memory (with lcd). And multiplicated this for each I/O channel... Calculate it yourself.
With the principle of compatibility in mind (especially for older units with limited resources), I can imagine - this would probably "waste" resources for more important things... Not to mention, that probably all LCD equipped units would need a firmware update, too...

Re: User names for routing??

Therefore, I tend to say the focus should be on having the benefit in TM FX, maybe not on the device itself.
Stand-alone mode is more kind of an "exceptional" handling.
If you have an Apple tablet, you can even use the TM FX application.
