Topic: Fireface 802 USB issue with Cubase Pro15 , AMD Ryzen , Windows 11

I have built a new PC with AMD Ryzen 7 CPU, Asus ROG X 870E-E motherboard and Windows 11. Everything went smoothly including cubase installation;
When I open cubase the project opens as usual. But if I load a VST there is no sound. The transport bar moves but no sound. I will have to opn the buffer settings page and to change it for it to work again. Sometimes it works when I toggle between RME ASIO driver and Steinberg generic ASIO setting in the project launch page. I have tried disablling the legacy USB settings in BIOS, changing the WDM setting to zero, resetting the total mix. Nothing worked. I never had issues with cubase on my Mac M2 max.
This is very dissapointing. I have searched this and other forums and no one seems to found a solution.

What kind of plugin is this? Does it work with other software like Reaper? VST is rendered entirely within the application, neither the driver and mixer nor the hardware are even aware of it.

I have tried VST's like Yamaha ESP, addictive drums, and even with cubase stock plugins and a audio track also does not produce sounds. I have to do either of the following to get it going.
1. Toggle buffer size
2. Change RME output assignment in cubase from 1/2 to 3/4 or 5/6 and toggle back to 1/2
3. Change to steinberg generic midi and then change again to RME fireface midi in project launch page in cubase
Tried all USB ports on the motherboars & different cables , still no luck. Never had issues with the Mac M2 Max with same plugins in cubase

If I may ask a simply question: what about checking Studio - Audio Connections in Cubase? Are those tracks routed correctly in Cubase?

Instead of toggling the buffer size, there is also a reset button in cubase audio device setup. Does that help too?
Does your board have usb2 ports? Tried those?
Also make sure you have the latest bios for your motherboard and the latest usb drivers. There are some known issues with the amd usb ports.
If all else fails try an usb add in card. This may also be usb2
Also make sure your energy profile is set to max performance and all usb power saveing features are disabled

Updating the BIOS + AGESA could help, also enabling steinberg power scheme and disabling USB power saving also "release driver when application is in background" better if disabled just to force cubase to inizialize the driver at startup. And yes USB 2 should work.

Thanking all of you for the comments. I finally figured out the issue and the fix after reading all the posts in here and steinberg website and and trialling so many things. The probelm was fixed after I changed the USB port in the motherboard. The board is ASUS Strix X870E-E. There is a dedicated USB port which is used for BIOS updates. When I used that port for the RME fireface the problem is gone. So probably this port is either USB 2 or it has a different commmunication path with the CPU. Obviously it is special thats why its been used for the bios updates.

This update port could use a different USB controller that supports the USB transfer mode (being used by RME with the USB ASIO driver) better.

I would have cross-checked the following:

1. Did you use the latest BIOS version? This might have fixed USB issues for ports coming from the chipset.

2. Did you try all USB ports? Usually USB2 is less problematic compared to USB3, but who knows. When trying all USB ports you will not only try ports fed by the chipset, but also from 3rd party controllers like ASMedia. ASMedia USB3 implementation is usually terrible (UFX III not working reliably with it), but USB2 might work.

What version of Cubase is this? Did you try to exclude ASIO in your tests?

3. Configure one WDM device in RME driver settings, make this device the Windows default sound device, and then try audio playback with YouTube.

5. Are BIOS settings ok (energy saving disabled)? Disable C-/P-/T-States, in some BIOS C-States are not disabled. You need to enter the max sleep level for CPUs: the best is no / not to much sleep, e.g. C0/C1.
It can help to enable TURBO to get the all core turbo (approx +200 MHz for all cores).
Enabling Speed Step makes it possible to control CPU core parking and CPU clock through Windows energy profiles.
