Topic: TotalMix Trim button unexpected behaviour

Hi all!

I am missing something that is probably very basic, but anyway:

It is pretty random to me but sometimes when I activate the T button of a channel the fader doesn't respond to my mouse movement. Than I deactivate it, move the fader a bit, reactivate the T and than it follows my movements. Do you have any clue why this happens?

I am currently on version 2.1 beta 3 (Mac M1 Tahoe) but this happened in previous versions of TM as well.

Thanks for your support,
Michele

This happens only when the fader is fully down, right ?

Yes exactly

Re: TotalMix Trim button unexpected behaviour

I can't tell if this is normal or a bug

Edit :

It seems to be normal

When the fader is fully down and there is no other routing from this channel, then the trim has nothing to work on.

Re: TotalMix Trim button unexpected behaviour

I see. There should be a reason behind this behaviour for sure but to be honest it is not clear to me and, because of this, it makes the T pretty unpredictable when I press it.

I think it would be very nice to just be able to press it and increase or decrease a fader for every output, without thinking about the position of it, if it is -∞ or -60dB, why should it matter?

Again, maybe I am just missing something basic and understanding it would prevent this button to be unpredictable!

If someone is willing to explain it would be much appreciated.

Michele

Re: TotalMix Trim button unexpected behaviour

it is not for every output, it is for every routing

Activate T lets jump the fader to the highest level of all routings and they all show up by yellow triangles.

If there is no routing the fader stays at bottom and is out of function.

Behaviour is predictable. If fader is set to -∞ for all routings of that fader (that fader is not used in any routing), trim does nothing. Trim starts to work in that situation, if at least one routing is not -∞.

But, why it is so, I do not know. I guess, it is so because of the math (calculations) behind.

Probably @MC could answer logic behind precisely...

Re: TotalMix Trim button unexpected behaviour

So please tell me if I understood correctly:

in order to have the T working I do need to "create a routing" by moving the fader at least once for every output I want to control?

It is also true that I do need to have the fader in a non -∞ position, otherwise I cannot move it. Actually sometimes this is true, sometimes not. Still didn't understand how to easily predict this at a glance.

eg: in the following scenario (I uploaded a video on youtube) I don't remember what I did but I have three different behaviours from this button for three different faders:

https://youtube.com/shorts/hXrcZcgEwaM

1 - SSL does what I expect
2 - SSL does nothing
3 - SSL shows me only one white triangle, so it means it is moving the fader only for the selected submix

Maybe this is simply not the function that I was looking for. Do you guys use this button a lot? In which situation?

Thanks

No, that is not needed.

Generally, I would do this:
A) If the fader is in a non -∞ position, just press T and use trim. (At least one routing has that fader in non -∞ position)

B) If the fader is in -∞ position move it slightly to a non -∞ position, just press T and use trim. Or, if I know that that fader is used in a routing, just press T and use trim.
