Topic: usb.madi dropouts in cc mode with iphone

Hi, I have dropouts with the usb.madi in cc mode with an iPhone pro max 17.

usb.madi FW is 18, CC 13

The usb.madi is inserted in a direct out ace device.
It doesn´t matter if src is on or not.

My Mac book is fine and plays without any problems at this port.

Laptop shows 47.xxx kHz, iPhone shows 44.xxx

The iPhone works fine with an usb to XLR adapter at my desk.

Any ideas are welcome

Is that sample rate on the iPhone intentionally? iPhones typically do not follow external sample rates, so you need to set it manually.

Apart from that CC mode via USB 2 to an iPhone with 64 channels audio I/O - one should not expect too much. And what software is used on the iPhone for audio?

Where can i do that? I had the impression that it doesn´t matter when SRC is activated on that port.

I run spotify on that iphone. It´s just for Break time 2 Track Playback, when i use the ACE as PA Controller and i was curious to try it out.

The usb.madi works fine when connected to a MBP to record or playback via Reaper or any other audiosoftware

Re: usb.madi dropouts in cc mode with iphone

Unclear what you try to do.
Do you connect the Madiface to the iPhone or to the ACE device ?

And what is the other Madi equipment ?

Re: usb.madi dropouts in cc mode with iphone

The ACE has four Madi SFP Ports.

You can use the ACE as PA Controller, Playback engine or as a format converter from Madi to Dante (or Madi to Madi) with SRC.

There are SFPs for Madi BNC, Madi LC or the usb.madi.

I guess the main use for the usb.madi is in Playback Mode to connect two Laptops via usb c
You can use it as a converter from usb to Dante. So it can act like a Madiface USB, or a Digiface Dante, if you want.

My usecase is, when the ACE is in PA Mode, to use the usb.madi to connect a device for "Pausenmusik", since i don´t have a use for this port in that scenario.

The ACE has Analog/AES I/O and Dante, so Madi is only needed if a second desk with Madi must connect to the PA Controller.

And where is the iPhone now in this salad ?

The iPhone is connected to the usb.madi and is routed to the PA.
Since you can switch between desks, it is usual to have the "Pausenmusik" connected to the PA Controller

Of course it can be done in many other ways, but i try to understand why i have dropouts with the iPhone, while
the MBP works fine in cc mode. Maybe it simply doesn´t work cause apple won´t allow that?

Re: usb.madi dropouts in cc mode with iphone

We had also dropouts with iPhone Pausemusik because organizer prepared this music as playlist in Spotify to play as stream from the internet.
it was in the Keller of an old building in the town, no wifi, internet was not reliable there.
Your music is on the iPhone in a folder ?

Re: usb.madi dropouts in cc mode with iphone

I don´t think it's a problem related to Wlan.
With a Generatorapp I have the same kind of dropouts and with iTunes/ music it is the same. And these tracks are on the phone an Alan is off!
The iPhone works fine with a usb c to xlr adapter.

I think it is a communication mismatch between the usb.madi and the iPhone. Maybe it simply doesn´t work and cc Mode is not supported in this case?

As said before, Spotify/ Reaper, etc. work fine in cc Mode on the MBP and there are no dropouts and the samplerate is 48 kHz

Re: usb.madi dropouts in cc mode with iphone

It is supported, but how deep and how stable is not guaranteed. iPhone iOS is not made for a MADI interface, but it should be possible at least to play out a stereo music over Madi channels 1/2.
In this case I would use the adapter instead of CC-interface.

Re: usb.madi dropouts in cc mode with iphone

My iPad works just fine (iPadOS 26.5.2).
Can someone explain whats the difference between the two devices in handling audio?

Re: usb.madi dropouts in cc mode with iphone

Multichannel audio DAW LogicPro exist also as version for iPad but not for iPhone.

Beside that the iPad is much more powerful.

Where can i do that?

In an app that actively sets the sample rate. Hard to find though. Workaround: use Neutron and play a file that is in 48 kHz

Re: usb.madi dropouts in cc mode with iphone

While the Neutron player is a bit expensive, we can use free apps Winamp or VLC media player or Foobar2000

I bought Newton and it is nearly the same as without.
The files play now in 48 kHz, but that doesn´t matter.

The pattern of the dropouts is a little bit different than before, but still unusable

Re: usb.madi dropouts in cc mode with iphone

I tried foobar2000 too, and it makes no difference. Adjustig the buffer to the max (10000) changes the pattern a little bit, but still to much dropouts.

Re: usb.madi dropouts in cc mode with iphone

What I also would check : Apple music app, in the iPhone system preferences the Apple music app has some audio settings, streaming quality, EQ, loudness correction, etc. I would switch OFF all of them for a test.
While you don't use this app it is active in the background.

Re: usb.madi dropouts in cc mode with iphone

Not with Neutron. That one talks directly to the USB.MADI. It has buffer settings and status info (you need to work through the multitude of settings to find that). Default is SRC mode, set it to follow the file's sample rate (in case you did not already).

Anyway, there is nothing we could change or optimize here. If CC on an iPhone can not handle that data load (remember that in isochronous mode even a stereo playback will activate all 64 channels to be transmitted) then it is as it is. I will check that myself in 2 weeks.

Re: usb.madi dropouts in cc mode with iphone

After a little research on the www, it seems that the iPhone 17 (pro max?) has an issue with cc.
A iPhone 16 pro from a colleague works flawlessly, as expected
Sorry for the trouble

Re: usb.madi dropouts in cc mode with iphone

Then there is a chance after an upcoming iOS upgrade the issue will hopefully be gone.
